PlayStation 3 users have been suffering with terrible online play from Call of Duty 4 since release. This problem seems to be coming to an end as the guys at Infinity Ward have finally gotten on the issue at hand. According to them, they will have this problem fixed today or within the upcoming couple of days. This is a letter directly from the team over at Infinity Ward.
“Firstly, on behalf of Activision and DemonWare, I’d like to apologize for the difficulties you’ve experienced while playing the PlayStation 3 version of Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare during the holiday season.
The fact is that we’ve experienced an unprecedented load on the DemonWare backend servers, which has steadily increased since late December beyond our expectations. In spite of all of our planning and precautions, the extreme load revealed several issues. These issues triggered unscheduled downtime this past month. As we encountered issues, we deployed additional hardware and/or optimized the server infrastructure to keep the service up and running. However, while the servers were active for the vast majority of the time, many players experienced significant wait times repeatedly when joining games.
To overcome this issue, we’ve implemented a fix today, which should dramatically improve the time it takes to join an online game. And, in order to make additional improvements we are briefly taking the servers offline tomorrow, Wednesday January 9th at 4:00 a.m. PST
As a rule, we try to avoid scheduled downtime whenever possible. However, at this juncture we will need 1-2 hours to update a number of server infrastructure components. We apologize for any short-term inconvenience this may cause, and appreciate your ongoing support and patience.
Our expectation is that the server load will continue to increase as system bottlenecks are removed. So in the coming days, we will continue to monitor our system and make further optimizations and improvements as necessary. We will be deploying additional hardware to improve our database throughput and load handling. In addition to the added hardware, we are further optimizing components of the underlying server software to improve performance. We hope to be able to hot deploy these updates while the system is live. In the event that the system requires further scheduled downtime, we will post a message both here and in-game via the “Message of the Day” to keep everyone informed.
Rest assured that we are taking every possible action to insure that your Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare online PS3 experience is smooth and trouble free. We apologize for the trouble this has caused and ask for your understanding and cooperation as we get things sorted over the coming days.
Thanks,
Steve Pearce
CTO, Activision”
We’re glad to see Infinity Ward step up and take responsibility for the issue at hand and take the appropriate steps to move forward. As you can see from this information, things only look to get better from here. So far all of you out there getting angry or upset, don’t break your controller just yet.

i dont mind mistakes just as long as they take the blame for there mistakes and take action to correct them :)

Whatever the reasons for errors or malfunctions...atleast their man enough to admit their fault and will take actions immediately to rectify the problems caused. Most of all, I don't expect any law-suits either!
PS. @ DaveW: I apologize....although this is not article related, but I don't how to PM you another way... I recently saw pics of Star Wars characters in Soul Calibur IV from 1UP site, could you please investigate and find out of whether this is for REAL or an early April Fool's!!! We have faith in you...and may the force be with...thx
thanks infinity wards
PSU calm down with the title, Infinity Ward has made a great game for their first time and the the online has been great for me, best multiplayer experience yet. We should all be thankful for them responding to the situation and encourage not get mad.
good for them to admit a mistake and then fix it asap i will have to get on later
Hey Dave, I appreciate you coming out here and talking to us. Gives the site a bit more of a personal feel.
That's cool Dave, thanks for the prompt reply.
Also, do you think they'll just fix the problem or release a patch as well??
lol. last night i was searching for a game for Ground Wars, and it was "Finding Potential Matches" for a he!!luva long time, so i went #2. came back and it was "Getting Match Quality" lol. i washed my hands : )
Well, I guess we can be glad that COD4 was successfull beyond their expectations.
If they knew it was going to sell as much, they probably would have been better prepared.
it seems they under estimated the PS3 community, install base of the PS3 is growing exponentially
So it sounds like they weren't expecting as many players as there were. Thats good news in a way, as now they will realize just how big the PS community really is.
It was messing up bad on XBL, too, so I guess we got the good end of the stick.
Add: Fallen_Guardian: if you wanna play some call of duty for with me!
anyways it seems to be working alot better now, i never had any troubles really, but there is new multiplayer modes!
I sure didn't hear any news of the 360 servers going down...
bout frickin time!!!!!!!
From alittle before Christmas to now is not exactly "immediately" fixing the problem IMO. All of my friends and I patience were really tried every night when we played COD4 online....its a drag when you find all of your clan members online, every one is in the party, pysched and ready to kick ass and take names.....and the only thing end up happening is that you are there trying to entre a game for 15 - 20mins, then by some mystical power if you got in a full game...the match ends in a draw before it even starts. But I too am glad they have stepped up to correct this. I also noticed the new modes online lastnight, and I didn't have any issues joining matches either. Good job infinity ward.....I would take a late fix than no fix at all anytime :)
psn id: gingo... this is all good and well but seriously that patch that u's Americans got a month ago still needs to come to Europe and they better hurry up cos i wanna play some american m8s
look i just played last night and everything was fine and smooth. I go a lot of friend request from PSU and i appreciate everyone taking the time to invite me.
I'm pretty good and I have 2 accounts. First account is "Naucious" and the second account is ..... "ill_Wit_it". The only thing i dont like about cod4 is the fact because you do such a good job in a mtach people have the liberty of kicking you off so their stats wont be that badly diminished.
I was playing search and destroy and "MY OWN TEAMMATES KEPT KILLING ME" because they didn't want me to kill everyone so they could actually complete the objectives lol whatever..
I'm not in a clan and nor will i be in one i reap myself and expect everyone to do the same, I play nights and mainly weekends, believe me dont take my skills for granted and with that nuff said...
its by no means terrible just not that good :P
