Littlewood confirms Haze does not run in HD

Posted on May 19th, 2008 at 03:47 EDT

Derek Littlewood, Creative Lead on the forthcoming PlayStation 3 exclusive Haze, has confirmed that long-awaited First Person Shooter (FPS) will not run in high definition.

Contrary to reports, the game will run in 1024×576 (576p) as opposed to 1024×720 (720p), leaving the PS3 to upscale.

“We prioritise a nice smooth framerate over a different res,” commented Littlewood.

“Personally, I don’t really buy the whole thing. People did the same with Call of Duty, they did the same with Halo, and they say with those games ‘It’s not running at true HD!’ And it’s like, ‘I don’t care’. If the game looks good and it runs smoothly, those are the important things to me.”

Haze is due out on May 20 in North America, with a European release following on May 23.

PSU got the 720p res wrong.  720p is 1280x720p not 1024x720p.

And to Littlewood, yea I don't give a d**k either, but Call of Duty 4 (PS3) does not appear to have a layer of vaseline over the image.  It definatly is a bit, hazy..

The demo graphics were not in hd, i was a bit disappointed. I mean the screen shots look awesome but when I played the demo I was disappointed in the graphics. They are no where near UNCHARTED (a real PS3 game!!!!!)  If they scaled the graphics down for easier porting to the 360 then this game is a failure before launch.  Its sad that we waited all this time for our "Halo Equivelant" for it to be plagued with delays and bad graphics ect. ect. ect..  I will wait for signaficant reviews before  buying/renting this game.    already a disappointment!!

Halo3 doesn't look good at all, nor does this demo of haze (and cod online looked pretty good, but not fantastic), i couldn't even finish the haze demo. I had much higher expectations from the game.  But there's Ubisoft for ya, they are use to making multiplateform, no hd means you can fit more on a disc... at least thats what i got from it. But this makes it easier for me, now i'll just wait for killzone 2 and/or resistance 2

so....if this is true what that guy is saying...erm... how again did these folks at naughty dog create uncharted? That has probably the best gfx technology available in consoles and a rock solid framerate? And on top of that runs at a crisp native, true 720p?

Sounds to me like those people at free radical are not up to date , or simply lazy to make a proper next gen game. And they told us that all the delays would be worth the wait...im so glad the game is gonna flop majorly...

Agreed. All they are doing now is damage control, they already know they have a flop on their hands. They always did. They tried to make a Halo clone for the PS3, with the altenative to porting it to the console that actually has Halo (without making it better than Halo 3...which should have been easy). I hate to see developers fail after all that work, but it's their fault that they didn't try hard.

This just slipped a bit down my list. Damn, and we were so close to release.

I want to recant my statement:I'm still getting it. I'm not going to let something like this spoil it for me. It does, however, make me awfully suspicious(tech-preping to come to 360 maybe?). There should be no reason for it to have fallen below 720p minimum. Plenty of other developers have achieved higher specs.

Before this news even hit the biggest drawback i found with the Haze demo was the terrible graphics, technicalities aside they just look like ar%%.

Gampeplay IMO was nothing to write home about either.

Saying they reduced the resolution to keep a more stable framerate is utter @£^&%£^ take burnout paradise for example, great frame rate, seldom drops to problem levels even with massive amount of action going on. And decent graphics.

It's a shame but in all reality i think Haze was soo hyped, Just two letters away from Halo but in reality it seems much more.

EDIT.

Am i the only one though who thinks the Haze story (i mean game story) seems a little boring?

I've only played Halo for a few mins really but i think the story and concept really is so much better than an army which needs to take drugs, just seems kinda lame to me.

I have to say this is disappointing to me. I have a HD TV for a reason, to play games in HD. I knew about this cause I played the demo. I knew it was low res. I don't care if it's 360 or ps3, this is unacceptable for this gen. Heck, I want full screen AA, high res, the whole 9 yards. I want them to move forward with res & AA. I know it takes time & the have to balance these things but come on. Let's move ahead, not backwards. I'm still gonna get the game because I like the gameplay & 4 player coop which other games shy away from. I'll just be always thinking how great it would of looked in higher res & AA. I just want consoles to get even closer to PC games in these regards. I know I'm not alone in this.

Well, I think all of this is a little silly.  We are playing games that ALL of which are higher resolution/detail than the previous generation.  The fact that some devs have to scale back a bit to get the performance they need out of this or that (or both) machines is just due to inexperience with coding still for the new platform(s).

Isn't this Free Radical's first PS3 title?  Or at least it was STARTED first?  Guarantee that if they make a sequel they don't have these issues.  Haze seemed to have some issues from the development side from the start.  Perhaps in the management of the project or perhaps in retaining talent to work on the game.  No matter.

I'll wait to see what the full game plays like.  The story to me seems better than at least MOST FPS games I've seen and regardless of the actual pixel count, it seems to look very nice.  If I'm proved wrong after playing, then so be it.  But I think people are being awfully quick to judge on something they haven't played yet.  As for the demo...well, lots of people didn't like Uncharted's demo either.  Same with Ratchet & Clank.  I liked both of those when they came out though.  Let's just see, shall we?  We have another exclusive game here that at least seems interesting to most people.  Lets see how it goes.

Also, on the resolution front.  It may well have been the decision to include 4 player on screen co-op that determined the drop.  So would you rather devs build features in and make sure the game runs well to whatever level they are able to make it, or would you rather they concentrate on the buzz word numbers and leave features out?  People say all the time that great graphics don't equal great gameplay but then immediately bash something they haven't played because it's "specs" aren't all they think they should be?

I bought a PS3 to play games in HD, not in resolutions that are obsolete on my PC (I would never play games that only ran at 800x600). If I knew games like this were being created at only 576p I probably wouldn't have bothered with a PS3.

Edit: I usually look forward to Demo's to check out a game before buying it. Unfortunately, playing this for 5 mins has put me off the game completely. Gave me a headache due to blurry graphics.

This kind of thing really defeats the whole "HD" marketing bull sh.it we have heard from the get go. Buy a PS3 and you'll get gaming at 1080p and maybe a few at just 720p.... My console must be broken because I get lower rez games that run slower than a cheaper xbox 360.

576p...isnt that in Wii territory?

Right now on my PC I'm playing Bioshock, COD4, STALKER, Orange box, Assasins Creed, and Oblivion at max quality settings (eg: 16x AA) on a 30" HP LP3065 display at 2560 x 1600 rez with nothing under 60+ FPS ...that is 4 million pixels =  twice the resolution of 1080p. The so called "HD" next gen console speel is bogus.

To be honest, who cares? The game is fun, and runs great. The demo smacked the MGSO beta in the face in both gameplay and graphics. I know that the single player aspect of MGS 4 is great, but the online aspect is pretty lame, and I am a die hard MGS fan who was really looking forward to the online play. Well, not anymore after the beta. Besides, it seems that this generation is fixated on graphics entirely. As graphics seem to improve, the gameplay aspect seems to fall behind. As ps3 owners, we should be used to let downs by now. There are still alot of great games coming this year, some of which I can guarantee will deliver as promised, although it seems as though many will not. Haze is a good game though, and if you don't buy it just because it doesn't run in 720p than you need a swift kick in the nuts.

posted 7:34pm EDT - May 19th, 2008

I won't be buying it, not purely because it isn't 720p. As i said earlier in another post i wouldn't know if thats the technical reason why the graphics are underpar.

However yes the graphics issue is an issue for me, i find the Haze graphics offend my eyes they are that bad.

I know alot of people will bleat on saying nowdays its all about the graphics nobody cares if the gameplay is anygood.

This is the problem, companies are making games that not only look terrific but play terrific too! Burnout Paradise is such an example. So why should anyone really bother for a game which has only one of these important features?

Sure back in ps2 days you could accept that certain technical limitations could mean that a game had to focus on either graphics or gameplay, however  allthough the ps3 isn't by any means perfect it does have sufficient power to run nice graphics. its seems lazy on the developers part not to take advantage of this.

This issue is made worse when you consider Haze is a PS3 exclusive, when i think exclusive i think ah, this company is dedicating its whole resource to making it supremely kick a&& on just ONE platform. Perhaps the wrong view but its mine.

I'm not trying to slate it because im not a 14 year old fanboy who somehow needs to feel protective over things he likes, i just feel the developers of Haze are treating the PS3 gamers with a great disrespect.

Just my take on it.

Keep in minf HD technically starts at 720p, but SD pretty much tops out at 420p so if it's not HD what is it?? .5HD? eff that noise, it looks comperable to Resistance one on my 1080p screen so I'm going to call it HD. And the PS3 does a fine job of upscalling it to 720p ANYWAY! The game is just OKay to me, it's eventually going to get ported and it wont be exclusive anymore, we've known this for months so why is it such a big deal??

chubbaca, how much did your pc cost to run at those specs.  My ps3 cost just $600, which is the most expensive ps3 to date.  I bet my ps3 and my hd projector cost about as much as your computer and monitor.  My projector screen is 106", you say your monitor is 30"?  I would take the 76" bigger screen over the higher resolution any day.   On my huge screen, my ps3 games still look great to me!  Yes, PCs may beat out consoles if you have the money to dish out for it, but most people don't.  I used to be a solely pc gamer, until I realized you get more bang for your buck with console games.   And it leaves more money for other things, like hdtvs and hd stereo systems.  There are more sides to the entertainment industry than just games, I have them all covered.  Do you.  With pc games you are always having to upgrade everytime a new technology comes out which is every few months.  With consoles, it is years before you upgrade (even with the xbox 360 which is likely to have the shortest lifespan of any console I have seen).  PCs will always have better graphics, we all know that, but they will always be the most expensive form of gaming as well.  I guess you get what you pay for, problem is, most people can't pay for that, or are smarter as to want to pay for more.  I bought a pc a year and a half ago for $3000 and have ugraded with a new video card and cpu eqaulling about $400 since.  I still cannot play crysis at max settings without serious framerate problems.  For $3400 I could have bought my dream projector and receiver, and still had money for few games.  Yes I love my computer, but it is still thousands of dollars away from being the best.  At least with consoles, every owner gets the same experience, despite the difference in wallet size.  you can afford the console?  you can afford the best!  When I bought my ps3, a pc blu ray drive cost about $1000, my ps3 cost $600.  $400 less than the drive itself.  Seems a bit of a bargain in comparison doesn't it?  I will never go back to just pc gaming.  Where as if a game used to come out on console and pc, I used to get it on pc, I will now only get it on console.  You get max settings for minimal buck that way.  Consoles are the way to go, and as far as consoles go, the ps3 is the only choice if you want the most bang for your buck.  Long live the ps3!

this is very dissapointing. I understand that the game will run well but this decision has definitely made the choice for me on whether or not i'm getting it. A complete no. I had high hopes, too. I don't have a huge HD tv for nothing. Sorry my 60 bucks isn't getting wasted on this underdeveloped crap. If they were worried about the framerate in HD, imagine what else could be broken in this game. I'm sure the game will still sell well... just not to me.

After all the hype and all the time we have had to wait, I was expecting Haze to be something quite spetacular, on a par with Resitance and COD. However, Haze has proved to be a massive, MASSIVE disappointment! It is truly dreadful, the graphics are so poor with loads of bad flickering affects going on. The single player story is so naff, NO WHERE NEAR as good as the Resitance story line and the enviroments you play through are so bland and lack any rich detail. The online gameplay is ok, but I dont know, the game play just feels so kind of clunky, its just not as smooth and slick as Restance and COD. What a major let down this much hyped game has turned out to be... bring on Resitance 2 and Kill Zone 2!!!
