Play.com "blown away" by GTA IV PS3 sales

Posted on April 9th, 2008 at 07:28 EDT

Gian Luzio, Head of Games for online retailer Play.com, has commented on the success of Rockstar’s Grand Theft Auto IV for the company, stating he has been “blown away” by the number of copies the game has sold through prior to launch.

“This is the biggest ever title for PS3 by a long way - and probably 360 as well,” said Luzio.

Targeting the PS3 version specifically, Luzio noted how the upcoming sandbox title has proven to be a massive console seller, adding, “I’ve been really blown away by how quickly it’s sold on PS3. Sales have gone crazy and have proven to be a real hardware driver already.”

“We’ve sold out now, but will be getting in more stock as soon as it becomes available,” he added.

“We expect to have some stock back in for the day of release on April 29th.”

I sure hope EA doesnt get a hold of this.  I have been very displeased with all of the EA games that have come out lately.  Other than skate and Rock Band, they have been terrible at making games.  They used to be such a well known and respected company, but they have just gone down hill.  I have personally decided not to purchase anymore EA games.  I have gone to 2K sports for all my sports games, except for mlb 08

I have boycotted EA as well, but I didn't stop at sports games.  A message needs to be (and has been) sent to EA.  I skipped Rock Band, too.  I'm glad the best baseball game around (now) is a 1st party PS3 exclusive (MLB 08 The Show), and I've always played 2K basketball...never liked EA's "Live".

EA knows that RockStar committed to make a new Franchise exclusive to PS3, and Peter Moore ain't having that! EA sucks!

@The_Last_Romeo

What do you mean EA sucks? They were the ones who helped build the PS3 today! Some of their games I do have to admit did suck, but does that mean the company sucks?????

This story doesn't surprise me. I live in small town of about 35,000 and even they did an article on the game.

Personally I don't like EA because they're all about the money.  The have a tendency of screwing over game developers after the game hits the market, not to mention after a game hits the market, EA nearly always has absolutely worthless support for it.

EA wont get it.. Nobody of the shareholders are stupid enough (talking to you Mr. Shareholder) to sell their shares to EA. TAKE TWO will sky-rise in value when GTAIV comes out, so EA have to make a really generous offer if there should be any easy-tempted people among..

I don't know why Play.com is "Blown Away". There's 120+ million PS2' users out there and I'm thinking that a large majority of them are going to jump aboard the PS3 train, and this is just the beginning. Grand Theft Auto is Playstation and the GTA series was home on the Playstation consoles and it's just natural that people are going to get the PS3 for GTA4.

I can't wait to see how the sales of PS3 and Xbox 360 console unit's fare this month. That Game Anaylst Patcher said that he thought that PS3 unit sales for April would be around 500,000 units and that really surprised me.

I hope that the Economic state of the U.S. doesn't affect people not buying PS3's because people sure aren't spending like they used to, especially when gas is $3.50 a gallon and when it's predicted to hit $4.00 dollars a gallon by Summer.

I feel guilty now. I have both versions pre-ordered: standard from Target(free console skin+collectible card) and the SE from Amazon(free license plate). Why am I like this? 19 days....

@ Frank Magnet - Hehe, awesome man. I really hope GTA4 outsells the 360 version by a lot. Then M$ would look really stupid for dishing out that $50 million dollars. But maybe they knew that GTA4 would be a bigger system seller on the PS3, so they weren't trying to compete with the PS3, just take away whatever shine they could. Since GTA4 already has so much gameplay the exclusive content isn't really a must have. They should have kept that money and made an awesome in house game.

Except for Army of Two, I have completely forgotten EA.  I just hope the oil companies can pull their heads out of their azses and drop the gas prices so I can buy more games.  Exxon made $40 billion in oil profits.  I think they can drop the price at least $10 a barrel.

I've put my order in with Play.com after it seems as though most UK high street stores wont have copies...  I hope it arrives on time...
