Sony has released its consolidated financial results for the 2nd quarter that ended on September 30, 2007.
The company's operating loss in the game division increased because of "strategic pricing of PS3 at pints lower than its production cost." Overall hardware sales were up, and the division saw a 42.9 percent increase in sales thanks the PS3 and the redesigned PSP. PlayStation 2 sales remained steady.
Total game software sales dipped "as a result of a decrease in PS2 and PSP software sales." Also, Sony has changed the way it reports hardware and software unit sales.
Instead of counting shipped units, Sony now counts actual sold units. The quarter between July and September are as follows:
Worldwide hardware unit sales (increase/decrease year-on-year)
PS2: 3.28 million units (a decrease of 0.13 million units)
PSP: 2.58 million units (an increase of 0.56 million units)
PS3: 1.31 million units
Software unit sales
PS2: 38.0 million units (a decrease of 9.2 million units)
PSP: 12.6 million units (a decrease of 0.6 million units)
PS3: 10.3

umm cool i think is that good or what
Yeah, I need some context or or comparisons though, but thanks for the Update.
How far are Sony from their sales predictions etc?
Sales are up and with a 42% increase, and with the price cuts and good bundles about its gonna woop 360 butt this xmas
So,Sony might just get their target of 11 million consoles by march 08
11 million by march 08 all depends on the holidays.
Sony's first year is starting to look really solid.
nice to see them counting shipped units
psn id: gingo.... this is decent but i cane wait to see this half of the years sales because there should be a much larger increase
good work.
Hmmm? Looks pretty good for Sony now.
Hopefully this time next year there will be a dramatic increase in PS3 systems sold....
Well done Sony [!][!] Bravo!
I wish they would have said a total so far also. Oh well, looks good
I can"t believe the PS2 is still doing so well, either way awesome
That would put total sales at around 6mill wouldn't it?
Its not as great as expected but wait till Q3 and Q4 sales come out. They will surely be a much greater differentiation from the Q2.
A 1.31 million units in the second quarter. Can you imagine next quater. Amazon 40GB pre -orders are rumored to be already sold out. PS3 Bringing It!
Sony Forever!
"the 2nd quarter that ended on September 30" OMG. I didn't know Sony's quarterly reports don't match the calendar. I hope this doesn't mean that their upcoming release-dates are actually 3 months later than shown.. i.e "FFXIII in Q1 2008" meaning [April-June]. However slim the risk of that being so.
The hardware sales are lower than I thought, but the software sales are much higher. One developer stated on GamaSutra, that most people just buy a console and 1 game with it.. heh looking at the results it's more like 10:1. Nice :) . Extra reasons for gamedevs to prefer consoles to the PC.
No doubt about it, this quarter was soft for PS3 hardware Sales. Look for Sony to double that in the third quarter if not tripple. 10.3 million units of software per quarter will keep third party support up there :).
Well playstation had a slow start but its going to start selling like hot cakes for christmas with the 500$ price tag and sweet bundles. I think sony played their cards right when they did the price drop.
nice job sony you deserve it
