Sony Europe boss David Reeves has said that the platform holder aims to utilize the new 160GB PlayStation 3 unit as a means of determining how consumers respond to a higher capacity version of the popular gaming system.
Speaking to MCVUK, Reeves commented, "The 160GB is a limited edition that we're doing to see how it goes in all the territories because if you look on your site, people are responding to the news by saying 'I want a 500GB PS3' and then other people saying that 'I haven't filled up any of my hard drive'.”
The 160GB PS3 will hit European territories on October 31, priced at EUR 449.

Sounds kinda cool but i dont know why they dont just keep it on the market? It would most likely sell really well!
So us europeans are just the pawns in SONY'S game of stratagey???
More sells for the PS3 this year.
The drive is a non-issue for me. Since it's soooo easy to upgrade. :/
the 160 gig is comming to the states in nov. i just upgraded mine to 250 gigs. and i already have used 70 gigs.
I have the original 60 gig and have had to delete things four or five times. If someone can't use 160 gig, they are not using thier ps3
i have the 40gig
i truelly need to upgrade my HDD
I have an external 500gb drive but I can't seem to get it to work with my PS3, when I connect it to my console my HD drive wont turn on, is there something special to do?
@ princevegata1980
er..you do realise you cant save game demos and game saves via an external source? it can only be used for movies, pics and music...so you would need an internal sata 2.5 hard drive for anything within the aforementioned//if you did know this, how about looking within the top of the XMB to see if it is registered with the system...strange, but if not its faulty ;)
I would not get this I could buy a regular ps3 and upgrade it myself. Oh wait no I wouldent duh I would not be getting another ps3 untill I get the same options as my first one that I got at launch. Which is my 60gb unit.
"So us europeans are just the pawns in SONY'S game of stratagey???"
Not really pawns, it is better to see how consumers will react to the new model instead of mass producing them and wasting all that money when no one wants it in the end. Sony is going to spend a lot of money to make these consoles they might as well see if it will pay off.
I have a 320GB internal that I used 170-180GB of for now. I also have a external 1TB that i used about 250GB of :P The most important thing for me is the memmory card readers and many USB ports. One or two USB in the rear woldn't be wrong eather!
uh, hey sony... its actually the backwards compatability that people care about here! you gave us the option to put in any 2.5" drive we wanted... so why not just let us do that rather than release even pricier (am i right there?) models
jduck:
Only a select few want BC to return. I have it, played one game don't use it. There are loads of great PS3 games coming to be concerned with PS2 classics. Come on people, let go, it's time to move on.
@16 tell that to the guys still bringing out the ps2 games...
@ jduck, PS2 consoles are cheap to make, but to include the PS2 BC in a PS3 is actually very expensive. It actually increases the cost of PS3 by $100-$150. Also, you still don't get as great compatability as the original PS2 regardless of SKU. That's why it's best just to make a cheaper PS3.
@ocelot - to be honest sony only has to change the hard drive for these new systems. They don't have to build a brand new console from the ground up. They simply acquire more 160GB instead of 40GB or 80GB.
Not to bash Sony but is this guy serious? Yes there is a "need" for a larg(er) HD but the REAL need this Christmas is to get a CHEAPER PS3. A $300 PS3 would do wonders, just like the $400 did last year. The BIG difference this year is that there are actually $300 blu ray players out there, so the video buffs now have a good alternative. I realize that Sony needs to make money on the PS3, but the competition is very fierce this year and cost is a HUGE concern in the U.S.A, and I bet also in Europe.
Lastly, I bought a 60GB day one and enjoy it, but almost EVERYONE I know who doesn't want a Wii, would buy a PS3 "if" the cost was down. $400 is a great step forward, but $300 or even $350 would do Sony a world of good.
I think the point here is would people use more if they got more without having to spend more to get it. If I bougha Volkswagon bug, I'm ot going to be able to fit a family of five in it, Heck the passenger seat might be lucky to have a butt in it. If someone upgraded me to a Chevy Expedition not only could I fit them but I could find some extra stuff to stick in there too.
So they want to see if a larger Drive from jump with get people to buy more content form the stor without fear that they'll fill it up too soon.
I disagree with whoever thinks that if "someone cant use 160 GB then they are not using their PS3".
I have a launch 60 GB. I use my PS3 as I expect a typical user uses theirs. I play BluRay Games, I buy and download PSN games. I have Qore episodes, Playstation Home, and F@H. I have a few games that drop some pretty big cache files on my HDD, and you know what? Unless I have a bunch of demos downloaded (which I can delete when done with) I dont go above %25 capacity.
I am sure that eventually, with enough PSN games and games that store large cache files on the HDD, that in a couple more years I might fill up 60 GB.
If I had a 160 GB unit I can honestly say that nothing I would ever do could ever come close to filling that much space. I think Sony should stop at 160 GB, and let the very few that want or need more, upgrade it themselves.
Oh really Reeves. Since when did you listen to what the consumer has to say? The consumer wants backwards compatibility. Are you gonna give them that too?
Actually it turns out BC isn't expensive at all. Jack Tretton recently said it was actually quite cheap. I don't see how adding a large harddrive (one that the consumer has a choice in upgrading anyway) is cheaper than adding one component from the PS2 which is just as cheap or cheaper than a harddrive!
I've got an 80GB I bought right after they came out (the Motorstorm pack), and I've already got it filled, and mostly with PSN games and a couple PS1 classics. If I keep buying PSN titles, I''ll have no choice but to buy a bigger hard drive, especially if we start seeing more games as big as Siren.
Disk size isnt an issue, as someone has already pointed out its soooooo easy to do it yourself, i believe the real reasoning is to keep the price margin.
I still think they should re create the full monty version with BC extra USB and media reader, theres a lot of people out there who would stump up the extra wonga for one of these, im glad i got my 60GB at UK launch, i wouldnt be without the extra bits n bobs.
I would also like to see a limited edition version made of carbon fibre, i would snap it up pronto cos it would look way cool
So being a european is now like being a royal food taster(albeit one who's immune to all poisons),man i want that job.
psn id: gingo... i definitely think consumers want a bigger hard drive, it is so easy to fill up a hard drive especially when most games are asking for a 5 gig install before you can play plus all the content from the store
I am sure these units will sell pretty well.
Ughhh....$ONY should be selling the damn PS3 without a HD, let us buy what size we want at the Point of Sale!!!. $ONY your charging us a damned fortune for a HD thats too small and we are sick of it. We want to buy our own, elsewhere, cheaper, half-the-price in fact!
230gb 2.5" Drives fit the PS3...anything higher and you must hang the 3.5" HD outside of the Console. I heard a rumour about a 500gb SATA - unconfirmed , untested and unverified - someone please ?
5400rpm HD's will perform 10-20% slower than 7200rpm HD's.
PS3 uses SATA-I / II 2.5"
