20th Century Fox and MGM busting out the "Must Haves"

Posted on August 21st, 2007 at 01:10 EDT

Twentieth Century Fox Home Entertainment and MGM revealed an interesting Blu-ray Disc release strategy. The strategy calls for 29 new release and "must-have" catalog titles that runs through the end of the 2007.

Among the many highlights of the impressive worldwide slate are six day & date Blu-ray/DVD new theatrical releases from Fox including Fantastic 4: Rise of The Silver Surfer and Live Free or Die Hard (Die Hard 4.00). In addition, the strength of the strategy relies on a four day & date Blu-ray/DVD (U.S. only) new theatrical releases from MGM.

With this strategy, MGM calls upong 19 "must-have on Blu-ray" films from the two studios´ libraries. The first one, giving it the title of Fox's first TV release on Blu-ray, is the popularly know Prison Break series.

With the switch to solely Blu-ray and DVD, Fox and MGM are optimizing their database of sales for the Blu-ray, which attracts a greater majority in sales by beating HD-DVD 2:1.

"Given that Blu-ray has consistently outsold HD-DVD all year, and this is the case for any titles released by any studio in both formats, we believe that the time is right for us to accelerate our activities and help convert the nearly 60 million high definition households worldwide into Blu-ray households," noted Mike Dunn, President Worldwide, Twentieth Century Fox Home Entertainment.

With this move, we are excited to see both Fox and MGM's intention to release at least one state-of-the-art title per month featuring numerous "Blu-ray firsts."

Nothing significant really till October. Thats when all blu-ray discs will use java script for their interface. Thats when blu-ray will really rock. Please remaster 300. HD-DVD had the better more interactive content they use MS xml stuff yuk. Java is incredible. I am confident blu-ray will prevail.

The reality is most people dont give a fig about Bluray or HD-DVD. Most people have DVD and are only now enjoying upscaling. At the other end, you have millions of people with hard drives full of TV shows, music video, and movies. Why will these people buy Bluray? No one really cares. The actual sales of this stuff is tiny.

Id like to see Sony focus on getting a good selection of games out to support us. I just want games please.

The growth of HD adoption and HD purchases prove you wrong. This is a common arguement picked up by those who said at first, blu ray will fail, followed by "its unproven technology", which lead to "oh these high blu ray sales are short term, gamers don't watch movies" to now the most repeated retort ever....... well at least dvd is beating blu ray.

It is quite funny.

Fox is so dumb.  First they bailed on the Blu Ray format back in April, then, they said they werent waiting for BD+, now, here comes the titles, a month after BD+ is ready.  They are only in Blu Rays corner for BD+, period!  They dont care about you! They dont care about which has the most GB!  They care about money, and not because having PS3s everywhere means people will buy BDs, which isnt the case, its because they feel that with all this encryption, people wont hack there discs or they will be able to keep it to a minimum!  Wrong!  BD+ will be broken ASAP!  People have been waiting for BD+ titles forever so they can start braking that.  Fox should be fare to loyal customers and release on both formats if not just HD-DVD.  The features are there, the hardware if proven and affordable to everyone!   Not just the wealthy or well off.   Also, someone said Remaster 300 because HD-DVD has better features.  DUH!!!!!!!!!  You fanboys kill me lol

HD-DVD is successful because its easy for studios to develop the special features using iHD vs BD-J.   You need a legit comptuer programmer to help create BD-J material, and on top of that, all titles dont have all the same features.  Even Universals most basic movies (Catalog Titles) use some sort of feature required from the HD-DVD group.  Bookmarking is one my favorite features.  Does Blu Ray offer that?  Nope.
