2GB levels in Killzone 2

Posted on August 26th, 2007 at 12:45 EDT

More Killzone 2 snippets fresh from Deutschland, home of the Leipzig Games Convention.

Firstly, each level will make up a whopping 2 gigabytes. That's about half a DVDs worth of storage...which is alot. Obviously, this is why it's on Blu-ray, but it may account for the current slow down at checkpoints and the like.

Also, due to the sheer detail and effects crammed down the Cell and RSXs proverbial throat, the game will run 30 fps, and will ‘only’ be at 720p. The detail is so high in fact, that the amount of polygons used in one soldiers face is roughly the amount used in one entire Killzone 1 level. As long as it doesn't cause any issues like the ones seen Madden '08, it should be fine.

Press have been allowed to play small bits of the demo level shown at E3, the one which was ‘hilariously’ ‘forgotten about’ by Kaz ‘Riiiiidge Racer!’ Hirai, Jack ‘I’ll give you $1200 if you find a PS3’ Tretton, and Phil ‘We’re not arrogant’ Harrison.

General reception of the game so far has been good, with people impressed by the graphical features and effects.

Stay tuned.

I don't see a problem,RFOM is 30 fps AND 720p.So long as the detail will get better or at least not worse.

You've got to be kidding me, this is practically Sony's flagship title and they couldn't even kick us 60fps? How many millions of dollars went into this game? This was the most promising game Sony had, the one that would compete with Halo 3, and this won't even run in 1080p? That's ridiculous. We don't even know if this game is going to PLAY well, and here we are, getting shafted by a lack of both 1080p, and 60fps.

Lots of loading!  I have a feeling this will be bitter sweet.  Lots of loading and like Yuk-Yuk said, kind of a waste.  Thats too much in a level.  It should be a great game anyways.  I hope im wrong.

If there is truly that much detail in the game, 720P should make little defference for most. I on the other hand would prefer 1080P native as th 70' XBR5 I am getting will look much better at that res. We will see how well the 30FPS looks and plays. I am still in shock they would announce this so early. It kinda takes the sheen off, and makes it look like any other title coming out. I am very dissapointed about this news.  GT5 had better be 1080P/60, or I may just have to sell my Ps3.

you mofos act like 720p @ 60fps or even 120fps, is going to make or break this game. If this game can't even run @1080p on PS3, what makes you think it would run 720p on Xbox 360? This game is straining the sh!t out of the PS3's hardware which is a good thing...looks like killzone couldn't be done on 360, and don't even try to tell me 50 gigs can be compressed to 9 gigs....

its all about sound and defered rendering, this is why 2gb levels.and who fuc***cares if hisruning at 30fps?look at him,its perfect, most cinematic game ever.nobodys dont even thinking about games spec in preveus generation consoles=ps2,wt* guys in your minds?next gen is all about game specs=60fps? its just stup**,for GOD game dont need super specs...ff7,ff8,ff9,cc and etc...this next gen killing you all guys...

Hm.. IIRC a normal film runs at 20fps, and as someone pointed out R:FOM runs at 30. All this high fps and 1080p, the only difference you see is the specs, not the experience. At least not for a normal eye. If you guys have been sitting in front of the tv and training your eyes and brain in order to be able to tell the difference between 720p and 1080p, and 30 and 60 fps. Then you can just blame yourselves.

For the normal, average person (including myself) this will not matter. I am buying the game.

why do we always have a dumbass in the net? shalashaaska how bout u just have a coke and a smile and stfu seriously...its been roughly 3 yrs these ppl been developing this game and it blows halo 3 out of the water so just shut up and deal with it....resistance was 720p and only 30fps and how did it look and play? GREAT stop complaining you dumb 5hit

Um... what's wrong with 720p? All the best looking games so far use it as the standard: Gears of War, Heavenly sword, Bioshock, Unreal Tournament III. Clearly 1080p will cost you a few effects and it's not like 720p with AA is going to look blurry. As for the lower framerate, notice the incredible motion blur used in Killzone, making it look very fluid compared to other shooters'. Stop whining! Clearly basic specs are not the most important factor.

720p isnt 1080p but the thing is we're talking about a game that does 10 times what madden does; Loads more textures more dynami assets a h6ll of a lot larger playfield I don't see it being such a bad thing. 30 frames persecond should be fine considering it's not a super fast paced game. A sports game SHOULD be 60fps, a shooter only benefits a little from the increase in frames persecond in fact all it would do is make it easier to get motion sick. Oh and seriously, this swear filter is just plain retarded.

I'm with you Alpha2... People just don't seem to realise whats really the difference between 60fps and 30 fps....Here's an example.... If you are watching a Horse race in HD... one is showing at 60fps... the other at 30fps..... to see the difference you have to be watching the horses legs... one looks clear as day and the other looks slightly blured .. but only slightly... there is still good definition... the rest of the screen is crystal clear... So... with that analogy... put it into context of the games you play...Anything with fast action needs the higher frame rate...a First Person Shooter?? not necessary... not saying its not nice to have the faster frame rate but you don't need it.....1080p?? well even I was kinda hoping for that but 720p works just fine and the game is going to be stunning....As if you didn't know that already... I didn't hear anyone complain when the in game videos were shown... everyone loved it and was 30fps in your mind??/ I think not... Even the haters liked it...

Let me see.. That will be about 20 levels. They better be large also, rather than just detailed. I don't think a whole Killzone 1 level polygon count is equal to a soldiers face, judgeing by the trailer. But damn, I'm excited about this game!

I too agree that 60fps is not needed for a FPS....but damn, I really thought 1080p would have been stamped and sealed all over this.....but once again, only people with HD tv's 42" and larger might be missing out...slightly, by it maxing out at 720p. I am still getting this game...I just hope the loading times aren't high.

30 fps? eeeasssyyy killzone, don't screw this up. tone it down a notch if you have to. something like framerate issues isn't something you need if you are trying to be the hotshot halo-killer.

peeS3rulz.... I don't think you are seeing the picture here... maybe take your head out your *$$ for a second....Did you not hear about the number of polygons that are being used?? Look at the videos again and pay attention to the detail... the worlds are seemless... all 3D... you have any idea what it takes to render that kind of information?? Thats why a level runs at 2 gigs... There is no other console out there that has that capability... Handling the information and the sheer size of each level.... Think on it for a bit before you make idiotic comments...

wow, this game is going to be BIG! I can't wait for this, really. I wonder if the 2gig levels are uncompressed at all. That's just insane. Hopefully they utilize some kind of cache method so load times aren't a factor.

all this talk about 30 and 60fps is horse sht, in all my friends eyes the madden plays identically the same as the 360 version and has 1/2 the frame rate?  the reason is simple the 360 cant run 30fps and be stable the ps3 is manhandling 30fps unlike the 360.  like this is a big deal so stfu geeks.

I think that the polygon count isnt as important as shader effects and texture details. For example, the developers of Spider-man 3 bragged that spider-man consisted of 50,000 polygons (as opposed to 5,000 in spider-man 2), but the graphics still sucked, because everything was WAY too shiny!

Great looking. I only hope they don't focus so much on graphics that they neglect a good story, and most importantly, great game-play. The first KZ was far from great. Keeping my fingers crossed.
