2K talks PS3 BioShock trophies

Posted on July 22nd, 2008 at 06:32 EDT

2K Marin has unveiled details behind the company’s planned trophy support for the upcoming PlayStation 3 version of BioShock.

Speaking in a post on the Official PlayStation Blog, Executive Producer Alyssa Finley addressed the topic of Bronze Trophies, commenting, "Just like in the original BioShock, for the PS3 version our initial emphasis was on encouraging thoroughness and exploration of the BioShock universe.”

"Each system in BioShock has a reward for the player that digs deep enough. Our hope is that players that may otherwise neglect a system will want to explore it just for the Trophy. Systems like Researching, Modifying Weapons, Hacking, and Crafting are all loaded with awards. A meticulous player will find themselves up to their armpits in prizes."

Elaborating further, Finley also divulged how gamers would be required to obtain a Silver Trophy:

"For the true explorer, we present one of the more difficult Trophies to get in all of Rapture. The "Historian" Trophy is awarded for finding every single audio diary. This particular Trophy is Silver because we understand the rigor required for this endeavour," explained Finley. "If you're a true adventurer and seek to know the full story of the fall of Rapture, look under every desk and open every door. There are many to find."

Finally, speaking in regards to Gold Trophies, Finley confirmed that they would be based around repeated playthroughs.

"When considering how to use these Trophies to reward players, we chose to give a respectful nod to those few who desire a challenge. We believe that BioShock PS3 has a lot to offer in a single play through, but we wanted to emphasize and reward a player's second or third descent into Rapture. This led us to create new Trophies that encourage more advanced tactics and enemies that provide a greater challenge," said Finley.

"As a result of this thinking the first Trophy bears the name, "Brass Balls". If you desire to be among the few who have this prestigious award on their mantle, you must win BioShock on Hard difficulty with the Vita-Chambers turned off. A feat so daring that anyone even glimpsing this formidable Trophy in your glass case will be shaking with terror and respect."

Sweet, I might just buy this game again simply for the trophies. I did pretty well on the achievements for the 360, and I'm itching for some new trophies.

Altough I am more eager to play the game, I am happy to see Ps3 version will get its share on trophies. I would have bought the game just to see what the team behind system shock2 has to offer (great game too, check it out if you havent (PC))

I think every type of game has the same number of trophies, which is depending on whether they are a PSN game or a full game.

It would be better to base trophies on how good you play the game and not saying "if you finish the game 50 times you'll get a gold trophy"! imagine what you'll have to do to get a platinium trophy for this game?

Im glad your so incredibly comfortable with your status Richkaos that you woudl have to fathom something like that. Trophies plain and simple add replay value to a game that otherwise wouldnt have any. And for some show how much you have achieved theres no shame in that. Everyone cant be awesome like you and lack so much free time doing awesome things. Im sorry i have down time in between working at the hospital and i enjoy gaming my bad.

psn id: gingo... i'm glad some developers are starting to take trophies seriously and realise they enhance the game and with the sound of brass balls it sounds like they have done a good job

@10 (u just got poned by 15) Trophies add so much to a game. Instead of just playing to beat the game, trophies dive you further in the game. You are playing for something. It adds replay value even though trophies are just a small little add-on it makes games worth so much more. Props to #15: Good thoughts

On ps3trophies.org (I'm a trophy whore and I don't even got SSHD...) they state that there are two achievements for the 360 version that are excactly alike. So we might just end up with the excact same goals as the achievements. Not that there's something bad about it, I just wanted to point that out.

Anyways, I think it could be a cool feature or whatnot if PSU went out and contacted several developers who has some recently developed titles that doesn't feature throphies and ask if they aren't going to patch it. I would be really happy if someone asked DICE to implement trophy support for Bad Company.

I admit im all for replay value in a game but only because its a good game to play and i do have concerns over the health issues this may bring, not only that but some kids these days spent too much time in front of a TV as it is, this is just going to enhance the problem and can lead to social problems etc Im a big gaming fan and can see the fun in getting a trophy or two but there really is more to life than a playstation game and these trophies in some cases may cause some to behave somewhat obsessivly
