According to ComputerBase, the 40gb PlayStation 3 system is using a smaller heat pipe, and a 65nm Cell chip. This is great news if true, as these changes will ultimately mean cooler and more quite systems.
The European site also detailed that these changes had reduced the systems power requirements from 200 watts to 135 watts. While this reduction in your power bill will be almost zero, its nice to know that Sony is helping conserve.
The 40GB PS3 system launches this Friday for $400 and comes bundled with the Spider-Man 3 Blu-ray disc. It is Sony's big shot for holiday sales this year, and is going to be one of cheapest Blu-ray players on the market. It does, however, lack any form of backward compatibility, so it will be interesting how that will affect its sales numbers. One is for sure, if the system does indeed include a smaller chip and heat pipe, it should have a lower defect rate than its older counterparts.
Stay tuned for more on the newest PS3 SKU!

Powersaves nice little extra but other than that i doub people have problems with "defects" ? Atleast for what i read the current rate is about 2% so its just plain bad luck if your with in that limit.
wow amasing
well its quiet and doesnt overheat in the first place. what ev i guess its good news.
very weak that the PSU editors dont even know what the sku can and cant do......
it has no PS2 BC! but it DOES have PS1 BC!!!
Pretty cool... too bad they will not be making any 65nm with hardware BC... so it looks like I will be keeping my 60GB as it seems it is going to be the best SKU in the PS3 life, in a couple of years everybody will be looking for them...
I think this 40GB SKU is just the first of a new line of SKU. I don't care about BC cos I have a PS2 anyway, I don't care about the capacity as no matter what they release, there's always a bigger HDD I can replace it with, but lack of card reader on this model is a bummer. There's rumors of a 120GB SKU with 6x USB slots, and card reader... If true, I suspect this new premium model will be the first to come with DS3.
We all know Sony is great with hardware. I wonder what the PS3 will look like if they make a mini version in a few years, like the PS2 or PS1.
It is actually backwards compatible with PS1 titles. So whoever says "its not backwards compatible at all" is an idiot.

Why did'nt Sony do this with the 60GB console?
psn id: gingo.... this is awesome and shows sony have moved ahead and are improving their console all the time
This is great news, however now I have been duped by Sony again. Sony should give us previous 60GB buyers in the uk and elsewhere a discount or an offer rather then tell us all this. Just very stupid Sony. One word to sum this all. BOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO
@ snakeboy. hey. it is your own fault you didn't wait. i'm sorry but i am tired of people complaining and expecting sony to, "pay them back". be glad that you at least own one when alot of people don't and are happy to see a good price cut. in the electronics department things get cheaper. thats just how it is. it getting cheaper came a little early but...think about all the time you've had one. and think about what that time would've been like not having a PS3. my friend bought one early and he doesn't care. because if he had waited he wouldn't have had a PS3 for a year. so what now? when the price drops to $250 one day in the future will you complain then? no. you wouldn't same as if you shouldn't be complaining now. you got one, it works fine i'm sure. and i think you can live with paying extra.
Yeah very interesting but I doubt as well on the amount of defected PS3's are out there.
I guess this may mean that these model may last longer than the older models??
