80GB PS3 outselling 40GB PS3 at Amazon

Posted on November 5th, 2007 at 19:31 EDT
With the recent induction of the 40GB PlayStation 3 around the world, Sony has presented the public with a cheaper, but still efficient product in the $399 PS3 that comes with the Spider-Man 3 Blu-ray. On the other hand, the induction of the 80GB PS3 prior to the 40GB, has also received great respect and creditability within the market as it makes room for a larger storage space, limited backwards compatibility and a copy of Motorstorm, all at the price of $499.

The general conclusion would be that the 40GB will become the top seller between the two models because of the cheaper price tag, but retail data from Amazon.com points that notion into a different direction. At Amazon.com, a large retail site which covers a wide range of products, presented data that shows the 80GB PlayStation 3 outselling the 40GB PlayStation 3. The actual numbers were not revealed, but it should still be noted that even at a higher price tag, people is still willing to pay the extra buck for a higher quality product. Not to say that the 40GB is inferior, but it does lack the ability to play PS1/PS2 games and features a smaller harddrive by forty gigabytes.

This should not be anything surprising because last winter, the overall demand for the 60GB PlayStation 3 was way beyond the demand for the 20GB PS3. Note that both of these models were discontinued in favor of the current ones.

As of today, the PlayStation 3 with all combined models has sold over 5 million units worldwide. That number is expected to jump tremendously in the next year.

We now only have the 40gb model selling in Australia, I just hope the 80gb sku also comes down here as some of my friends would pay the little extra for more extras! I hope it'll be here by early next year before the BIG games are released!

This is just on amazon....

Everywhere else in the world, the 40Gb is flying off of shelves.

Not to say that the 80Gb isn't, but this is no temporary thing. It's permanent, these sales will continue and will even increase even after the holidays.

God it's a wonderful feeling being right. People want the Backwards compatibility and they're willing to pay extra for it because they dont want a hobbled system and have to hook up two systems to play their games.

No, the 40gb IS inferior assuming you dont own a PS2 that you dont mind hooking up and having a jungle of wires. But even then the 80gb still blows it out of the water because of the Motorstorm pack in and the extra 40gbs of space. it's just a far superior value.

Also can we stop saying "Limted Backwards Compatability" for god's sake? it's only like a 10-15% drop off in compatability. If the 60gb was at like 85% then there's still over a thousand games that will work without a problem.

See all Sony had to do was lower the price alittle. I can't wait to hear all the Xbot b*tches crying come April of next year when their format is the toilet again.

Ok this article could have been polished a bit. First off the 80GB PS3 has a 90% B/C so I would rate that a lot better that "limited B/C".  And there is nothing qaulity wise "inferior" with the 40GB SKU. The 80GB SKU has additional premium features like multiple memory card readers, extra USB ports, and a larger HDD. Considering the larger HDD and all the extra feartures like the 60GB SKU with a $100 price reduction from the launch price many are seeing it for the great deal it is!

Am I the only one that caught the mistake in the article saying that the 40gb can't play PS1 games when in all actuality it can.... It can not play PS2. So sorry Sarad better get the fact's straight before witing your article.

@Redrider - but it says that "limited compatibility" on the box itself. I wonder if you can check which games might have an issue.Either way, I am not surprised that the 40gig is doing well around the world and that the 80gig is selling well on Amazon. Most people want the PS3 regardless of which sku, the latter having more perks if a plus however.

No surprise here. The 40GB version is crap until they get it some BC. Yeah the price is good for people that dont have a need for PS2 games, but the 80GB is where its at.  Its also a double edged sword for Sony. The 80GB version costs more to make so they lose more on it......or dont make as much. I still think they will end up eliminating the GS from the 80GB version soon as well.

people want backward compatibility. it was dumb for sony not to put it in the 40GB PS3. they want to save money and not loose as much per console sold, but they have to realise they are still way behind the other 1.5 next gen consoles, and they need to increase their install base.

The 60GB version is still the best one. They shouldn't have discontinued it.

Instead of releasing 80gig and 40gig models sony should have just kept the original 60gig model and drop the price a couple of times.

hey correct me if i'm wrong but the 40GB still plays PS1 games despite what the article says. Also on the support section of sonys website they have something that tells which ps2 games are/aren't compatible with the 80GB and 60GB models.

Yeah, the 40GB DOES still support PS1 games. Sucks to misinform people!

I agree with Muskguy - the 60GB model with hardware BC (100%) is the pick of the bunch but sadly those in the PAL regions never got the chance to buy one. I'd buy one now if it got released in Australia.

Good thing I don't have the 40GB version or I'd be out of space already.  I hate to say it but I can't wait for the warranty to expire so I can upgrade to a larger HDD.

I bought PS3 80GB immediatlely when this was issued in market and paid $599.00. I was fascinated with this remarkebal home entertainment multimedia. As the price dropped, finally the most of poeple (not only kids)  can have opportunity to enjoy the magic of new technology (HD) in the begining of 21 century. Since I am working far away from my home, I can't wait my R&R on December when I will bring PS3 80GB in my village Livoc i Poshtem to my kids, as the first and the only one so far in my country Kosova - the SouthEast part of Europe.  The kids have PS2 since 2003 and that's why I prefer PS3 80GB - because of backward compatibility though I also bought a bunch of PS3 games. I remember my old times, as a kid, when ZX Spectrum was the first Home computer for game purposes using the old audio tracks in order to record games, and now I can only say: God Bless you Sony!

Replacing the HDD doesnt void the warranty. So I would just go ahead and change it

Seriously I do not understand people obsession with BC. I still have my PS2 hooked up to the TV and I think it is a waste to put wear and tear on the PS3  for no real reason. I would have gotten the 40 gig if it was afailable upon launch.

I'd be happy with a cheap 1GB PS3, as long as it had built in card readers

Staticneuron - For me it's a royal pain having spagetti cables all getting knotted up & gathering dust under my TV set. So I just want one console to do the job.

Worst still - I think I've fused my PS2 controller port; the R1 button now cycles through all the other button combo's making God of War II (for example) unplayable. Ive tried two other controllers & a wireless 3rd party one too and they all fail if I plug it into controller 1 slot. Bottom line I dont want to have to buy another PS2 - I just want one machine hooked up and I want that machine to play all my Playstation games. Ive got lots and I still like playing them...

Ive got a PS3 with software emulation and it does a good job of some and a horrible job of others - some just have a few artifacts and glitches whilst a few more wont play at all. I think if you are going to do something - do it properly. I want the 60GB model which came with proper hardware compatibility. I want it to work - not sort of work.

did any one come to think that maybe the 40 gig is doing well due to the consumers who are actually buying the ps3 for media purposes instead of gaming?

I've got my 80g model ps3 reserved at amazon, i haven't bought it yet for just 1 little reason i'm halfway across the planet working, but this christmas it's on...while i won't get my hands on many of the games that i want i've already pre.ordered them...and since it's rather cheaper and easier to buy on amazon (delivered at your door kicks Ar§€) it's no wonder that many ppl prefer this option. and for just 100$ you get a lot more things so no wonder the 80 gsku is more popular
