80GB PS3 removed from Sony Style catalog

Posted on February 21st, 2008 at 09:07 EDT

Sony Computer Entertainment America has removed the 80GB PlayStation 3 model from its Sony Style website, fuelling wide-spread speculation that the company is soon planning on discontinuing the high-spec machine.

A search of the website reveals that only the 40GB version of the next-generation console remains available for purchase, with the 80GB SKU having been recently (and indeed, surreptitiously) taken down.

This development adds yet more fuel to the belief that the 80GB machine is to be phased out soon, following earlier reports of the system having been removed from Best Buy’s website.

A common theory is that Sony is looking to introduce a higher spec 120GB console at some point.

Stay tuned for further developments as they become available.

This sux for people wanting to purchase a 'somewhat' backwards compatible PS3 right now.   They have to get a refurb that was treated like sh#t from someone else, or possibly get lucky hunting one down in the store.  I've got my 80 GB, so I'm happy.

Well, looks like it is gone afterall. Maybe we'll hear some news about it soon. Wouldn't it be nice if the new sku comes pre-loaded with Home, if Home is released by the time the new sku is announced that is

i spose this is one way of rewarding those that bought their ps3s at launch...

instead of being constantly reminded of how much extra they paid for the same product years down the track (see ps2 history)

Most of us knew this was coming. What really sucks though is the people who are getting or will be getting their income tax returns back and were planning to buy the 80 gig model. I know my friends brother was ready to get one and is now ticked off that he can't find one. Hopefully Sony gets the new SKU out soon

i dont think that this is a bad thing. im sure that they wont leave one version of the ps3 out there on the market. this basically just means that a newer and better version will be coming out soon. with manufacturing costs going significantly down, the newer model may be packed with alot of stuff, even with BC hardware instead of the software for BC

It doesnt matter, if you want a large HD in your PS3 just go and buy one, Sony fully support people who want to upgrade which is nice. I have had my 60GB version since day one and have rarely used the media card slots or the backwards compatibility but for me its a nice to have. i think they should do a top daddy 160gb version with all the card readers and backwards compat etc for those that want these features and stick with the 40gb budget version for those that dont. 2 SKU's is all it takes.

Man this sucks Im glad I got my 60gb on launch day, I use my card slots all the time to show pictures to my family from trip to transfer information I use it for  a lot of things. I luv my backwards compatibiliy cuz that means that I dont have to have my entertainment all crowded. I think that if sony wants the ps3 to succeed they need to realize that there is a lot fo people who want the high end ps3. I hope that they bring out another SKU with all the bells and whistles

Man why cant sony just stick to one model of the console, why keep upgrading, aint they satisfied with there own console yet. i think i brought my ps3 too soon.

I hate when you go out thinking you have bought the best thing, and few month down the line a better version of that item comes out.

If a new SKU comes out it should have the memory card readers, bc and at least a 160gb hard drive. I half feel sorry for the people who bought one at launch but hey ya know what they say.....good things come to those who wait

All good. However, keep the price as low as the 60gb would be now if it were still being made. £299.99

Well I was lucky enough to get the last 80 that SEARS had after hunting one for a week. Everybody only had the 40's even the Best Buy in Anchorage (Alaska) only had 40's left. So I fell fortunate that I was able to get one when I did.

I don't know why Sony wont just tell us that they are planning a PS3 with a larger hard drive. I don't see why it has to be so much of a secret because we all have common sense and there is no doubt that Sony will introduce a newer PS3 model.

I'm just glad I got my 60GB PS3 when they first came out and I have nothing to worry about. I don't see why Sony is phasing out the 80GB PS3 for a model with a larger hard drive because the hard drive can be upgraded easily... Maybe Sony plans to bring back the Emotion Engine chips in the newer PS3 models? Hopefully Sony will stick with the newer PS3 model.

No big deal. 80 replaced the 60 and something will replace the 80 in the same way.

Nothing makes me regret buying my 60 gig. Not even the possibilty of a larger HDD. I have the best version that's no longer available.

This can be good as well.  Remember, they have phazed out all the original SKUs.  So perhaps they are planning to release a all new SKU.  The word slimline comes to mind, at that very thought.  also, notice how much Sony is changing thier lineup as Home nears completion.   This leads me to beleive that, as well as being a download, Home may come pre-installed on an allmighty new SKU.  Who knows, maybe it will use the new PC cell proccessor, letting us use the "install other OS" option for what we really want it for: Windows!  Think,  Crysis, Gears, Halo(1 & 2), Far Cry 2, BioShock, etc.  And perhaps they will up the other stats as well. (Something M$ wouldn't do) I mean, 512mb of ram is Puny, and the RSX is the same way, but not to the same extent.  However, devs would have to put two modes in their games, and old school Ps3 owners, would cry over the need for another Ps3 (But look, if you went the X-box route, you would have already gone through several consoles.)

I was keen on PS3 until this mess with SKUs, unless Sony offer an upgrade from the current 40GB SKU, then I won't bother...jeez even the Wii has a built in card reader!

Man I hope they do bring back a high spec PS3 god forbid something happen to my current 60gb and I have to downgrade to the retard 40gb. But then again once the DualSHock 3 is released I'm certain they'll create a new SKU to pack it in with.

Ultimatly my Launch PS3 is the ultimate version because it has all the card readers, I can upgrade to a 160gb HD for 80 bucks and I have the highest backwards compatability so there's not a single thing wrong with having bought a PS3 at alunch. on the other hand, people buying right now are forced to get a dinky HD forcing them to upgrade almost immediatly, they only have 2 USB ports and no card readers as well as no PS2 compatability at all meaning you HAVE to keep your PS2.

160GB! Just because everyone wants to see 120 being that this would be how gigs usualy increas (doubles) and its what the crapBox came out with doesn't mean thats what's gonna happen. The only reason I'm flippin out over this is because 160 is specifically what said strait from the big mans mouth!

@ Snowspader: I agree with all your sarcasm.  I payed the highest price ($600) for my PS3 and better models continue to come out and sh!t on me some more.

Maybe Sony will let people into Home based on how early they bought their console.  It'd be the easiest way to repay us.

is Sony already announced what will 120Gb version carry on it?

i think there is a possibility that sony will plant new technology to support backward compatibility... (if i'm not wrong) sony took off the backward compatibility is because the price... sony want to cut the price of ps3... and right now,, toshiba and sony already succeed to get cell proccessor more little than before .. it means,,, sony can cut another price and put back the backward compatibily into ps3...
