Activision want compensation for Rock Band patch

Posted on December 21st, 2007 at 05:04 EDT

Activision has revealed the reasons behind the delay of a patch for Rock Band.

The company refused to authorise a patch to enable their Guitar Hero III controllers to be compatibile for Rock Band, and have said that compensation is the issue preventing its release.

Rock Band developers Harmonix had announced that it had submitted a patch to Sony so that the GHIII controllers could be used as second guitars for the game's multiplayer modes on PS3, like on the Xbox 360 version.

Activision spokeswoman Maryanne Lataif clarified earlier statements. "Unfortunately for Rock Band users, Harmonix has been unwilling to discuss an agreement that will allow us to provide that option in a manner that maintains the high standards people have come to expect from Activision," she told the newspaper, adding, "We believe we should be compensated for the use of our technology."

Consumers continue to be affected by this dispute, and Activision are hardly covering themselves in glory with their present stance.

everyone new the reason the patch was being blocked is because activision is being greedy.  they want money for the patch that they didnt have to use their money and resources to make, and if the patch goes through, people with rock band are going to go out and give more money to activision for gh3 guitars.

Activision is stupid. Don't they realize that they'll end up selling more copies of Guitar Hero III to customers who want and extra controller for Rock Band? There's no possible way for them to lose money on this deal, so why are they so bent on robbing Harmonix? Besides, its not really Activision's "technology" on the Guitar Hero III controller anyway, Harmonix developed the first 2 Guitar Hero games...

The GHIII guitar is a piece of crap, anyway. I'll just wait until the RB peripherals to be sold individually.

Wow...I can't believe what a total piece of trash Activision is being about this.  So much for the "customer is always right" mentality...Harmonix only wants its customers to benefit and wants their controllers to work on GH3 as well, what does Activision want compensation for that too?  On top of that they are failing to release content on 360 and PS3 at the same time which is another strike against them.  I'm so close to just selling my GH3.  Rock Band has better guitars anyway, and it's much more fun to play online.

Since these songs aren't licensed proporties of the actual games, Harmonix should just just pull a prick move, say "Eff you Activision" and release every GH3 song on Rock Band as a giant add on pack.  Just put them completely out of business.

Hmmm I like how the thread on the official forums about this was removed...they can't handle the sh!t people are talking because of their lame greedyness I guess...Maybe if they listened to their community instead of being a holes about the whole ordeal they wouldn't have this problem.  Harmonix should just get the license back and make GH4 because activision ruined it.

IF the fans want the patch then it's rightfully of Activision to demand compesation, granted it's a bad PR move from the public's perspective, but if I were in Activision's position I'd do whatever it took to get something out of it. Granted you paid like $2.00 for the patch or ask to advertise GHIII in Rock Band.

But to say that Activision is nothing but greedy bastards is being very closed minded, considering how much Harmonix is a threat to Activision since the break-up.

so if this was sony wanting compensation for microsoft to use say their eye toy to play some new card game similar to eye of judgement or microsoft has a patch to allow sixaxis controls for games and wanting sony to allow their customers to use the sixaxis for cool new gameplay for the next halo you stupid kids are going to say oh...that is fine....sony shouldn't be paid to let microsoft use their controllers or eye toys on games that are direct competition for their own product??? idiots....i would love to see what company would hire any of you people to be a part of their organization. wtf do they teach you kids in your business classes??? hmm...lets see.....help out your direct competition so that they can beat you in sales of their software....uh i don't think so. seriously....how stupid would activision have to be to just freely give that away. what would they tell their investors when rock band comes back and sells more copies than your game and makes your game obsolete just because some other company's customers wants it. do you realize they are helping rock bands customers???? not their own. what incentive should activision have....hmmm now you can have our guitars and make our game obsolete. just because you are rock band customers doesn't mean you are guitar hero customers. they are in competition.....not collaberation. will rock band let guitar hero use all their microphones and drums and stuff work in guitar hero 4???highly doubt it. yes money rules these peoples thoughts.....because without it they will lose their jobs.

and the thing is....it says right in the article activision is willing to do it...but HARMINEX REFUSES TO DISCUSS PAYMENT.  WHY DON'T YOU GET PISSED OFF AT HARMONEX NOT ACTIVISION???? they are the ones who refuse to even discuss it with activision....maybe activision isn't even asking for much.....but HARMONEX REFUSES TO SIT DOWN WITH THEM. jeez...i don't understand how you guys always get pissed off at the wrong companies....

Davin, what you are missing is that the guitar works on the Xbox 360, so why should Activision get compensation for PS3 compatibility?  If they wanted compensation for patches to both machines, then I could understand the request.  The patch was created at no additional cost to Activision so they are not being inconvenienced.  This is not a business decision, it's a childish attempt to extort former colleagues.  I'm glad that I'm not a fan of either game.

I have a simple answer. Patch the game to work with the millions of 3rd party PS2 controllers with a USB adaptor. Totally by pass this bullshizit and still leave a market desireing the real rockband guitat when it arrives. people will stop buying Guitar Hero all together.

Make it happen Hermonix.

@Davin, Your sony and microsoft analogy doesn't really hold up in this situation, M$ didn't invent the sixaxis controller, and using a bluetooth controller on a machine that doesn't support it....don't know where you got that analogy but whatever. the deal is that harmonix designed the original guitars, and although the new les paul guitars are a little different, very nice new whammy, sadly the buttons are closer together, they are more than likely based off of the technology harmonix created in the first place. Asking for compensation for something that creates a new active interest in buying your product is like asking an advertiser to pay you for the commercial that your product is featured in. Activision needs to stop trying to get every penny they can from harmonix and start listening to the fans.
