Afrika details surface on Japanese retailer

Posted on June 3rd, 2008 at 07:22 EDT

A Japanese online retailer has unveiled several details on the upcoming PlayStation 3 title, Afrika, including a release date and price.

According to the website, players will assume the role of a photojournalist who will be able to take pictures of various wildlife by foot, jeep or air balloon, as previously hinted at in various screenshots and trailers.

You’ll also be able to unlock various footage and real-life snapshots of the animals you encounter, which are collected and stored in your “Animal Library.”

The game will apparently hit stores in Japan on August 28, priced at JPY 5980.

Despite this, Sony Computer Entertainment Europe (SCEE) recently confirmed that the safari simulation title would not be coming to PAL territories, although this likely won’t stop gamers importing the title thanks to the PS3’s multi-regional capabilities.

Stay tuned for more information on Afrika as it breaks.

As good as it looks, I can't see my self spending my spare time 'shooting' animals for fun. It's one of those trick games, you may think it's a game, but really your having an 'educational experience'. -And your paying for it!

Who would pay money to learn...

@funitalian: Sorry, I thought it was obvious my post was said jokingly. I pay to learn myself.

PS: You live in the US-or Italy? Aren't most schools paid by the government? (Just out of interest)

@ DSSS91...About your comment "Who would pay money to learn" umm...besides having a full ride scolarship (excluding books, dorm, food, etc.) , do  you think college is free?!

DSSS91: I live in Florida, I really don't know if the Gov't pays for school or not in Italy. It was only a simple comment, no hard feelings. I just thought maybe where you're from you don't have to pay for college. This game doesn't interest me either to tell you the truth.

While it may be original, this game already looks boring. It's like Pokemon Snap but with real animals and life-like graphics.

this reminds me of the pokemon snap. they should make the animals attack the photojournalist if he/she gets to close to the animals.

I'll give a big pass on this "so called" game, anyway I'll be too busy with my REAL ps3 games, although this could be good for people which love african wildlife and can't afford or are too afraid of the real thing!

Sounds like that Wii game where you;re an ocean life photographer. So all in all I guess we all knew it was going to be this type og game the question is, if it cant find an audiance on a system like the Wii how could they expect it to find an audiance on the PS3? At teh very least it sounds educational but really how well do educational game sell? ...exactly

Let's hope the other games that were announced around the same time will still happen even if this one was a low probability.

I don't get it.  Ok, I wasn't really that deep into gaming during the last generation but I didn't think that there were too many titles that just came out in one region or another.  Maybe I'm wrong.

Still, this doesn't make sense.  With how consoles in general are selling in JP compared to handhelds and especially how the PS3 is selling so far, WHY BOTHER making JP ONLY games?  I can see doing so at first maybe, anticipating far greater sales, but anyone can see right now that it ain't happening.  Release them in other regions!   I'm not sure this would be my type of game in any case (ok, I'm pretty sure it's NOT), but the PS3 can always use more variety to play to wider audiences.   Afterall, that's one of the things that's always made the Sony platforms so great...the variety of game types.

So what's with (it seems) this larger number of titles this generation that seem to only be coming out in Japan?  Have those devs forgotten how to do localization?  Just doesn't make any sense to me...
