Andy Serkis event hints at Heavenly Sword 2

Posted on December 7th, 2007 at 11:38 EDT

Speculation of a sequel to Heavenly Sword has been in route since the games release a few months back. Like many developers today following a trend, Ninja Theory is said to be turning Heavenly Sword into a franchise, possibly a trilogy. More recently, news of a sequel has reared its head at the launch event for Andy Serkis’ industry networking organisation, Games Eden.

At the event, a spokesperson for Ninja Theory on occasion referred to the PS3 exclusive as “Heavenly Sword 1”, as if placing emphasis that it is only the first of more games to come.

This does not mark the first time that Ninja Theory has hinted at Heavenly Sword becoming a franchise, as earlier in the year Tameem Antoniades, the Co-Founder of Ninja Theory, said in a podcast that their original idea for Heavenly Sword is to be a “three-game story”. Furthermore, he said that the second phase is already written and that there is no reason to suggest that there would not be a sequel.

Developed by Ninja Theory and published by SCE, Heavenly Sword is a matchless IP that allows gamers to take control of the lead female character, Nariko. Through her, players will embark on a majestically filled journey as you set plot for revenge by seeking to destroy an invading King and his followers.

The game centers around a weapon called the Heavenly Sword (hence, the title, which can never be held by a mortal as it will slowly exhaust all life away from whoever bares it. The game’s concept is supposedly based around that of God of War, another huge PlayStation exclusive.

If ninja theory had any brains, they would take the complaints concerning the first game and improve on those areas for the second game. they have a good story line, they just seem to have lost focus somewhere down the line and produced something that strayed away from the initial specification (watch this video to see what heavenly sword SHOULD have been: http://www.gametrailers.com/player/5842.html). I really hate to see potential like this wasted. When i played it i thought i was playing some online MMO with the relatively small onscreen characters, exaggerated moves that involved 90% spinning and flambouyant dances. In fact some moves felt like in-effective overkills. Not to mention the very tiring sounds of the swords clashing.

They better get it out before God of War 3, or else its not going to see the light of day.

I would LOVE to have a sequel or two to this game. This series has a ton of potential and now that they have the tech down they will be more free to push the game to its limits.

Great news. Hope the sequel is longer (like everyone else). If people keep calling Heavenly Sword a God of War knock-off, then I'm going to start calling God of War a Devil May Cry knock-off...

@LP47PS3 - Pretty much your right, longetivity was a issue many people complained about and with the news of GoW III going on it might (more like will) steal the spotlight for Heavenly Sword 2.

With most of the leg work already complete during the first one, the second shouldnt take as long, and be a much better game.

i got a cool idea! STOP MAKING SEQUELS AND MAKE SOMETHING NEW. seriously every game has to have a dang sequel. sure the first game is cool (in whatever series) idea! let's throw in another gun and new locale and its a totally new experience. SNORE

I'm happy with sequels as long as they generate some new ideas or add features. When you demand a new game you're asking for a heIl of a lot longer deve period than you would get for a new game especially when the story is already written and the character models already built, even adding a new outfit for the model would take less time. Mean while creating a new game from scratch would take three times as long and risk not being as well received as this game was already.
