Bethesda: Fallout 3 will have smaller world than Oblivion

Posted on February 15th, 2008 at 07:32 EDT

Pete Hines, Bethesda’s Vice President of Marketing, has revealed that the upcoming post-apocalyptic outing Fallout 3 will feature a smaller game world than that of The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion.

Speaking to Australian website Gameplayer, Hines commented, "The world is much smaller than Oblivion, but packed with stuff to do. We've never bothered to walk across the world, but it's between 50 to 80 per cent of the size of Oblivion.”

"One thing we did well in Oblivion was the relative distance between you and things to do in the world. Drop a ball on the map and there's stuff to do within a certain distance. A world of endless space and meaningless walking is just not fun."

Fallout 3 takes place in a post-apocalyptic United States, ravaged by the onslaught of nuclear war. Players are cast in the shoes of a survivor living in the relative safety of Vault 101; a fallout shelter representing Washington D.C.

According to the developers, the game will feature a main quest of 20 hours long, with additional gameplay hours unlocked by completing various side quests and other miscellaneous tasks.

Fallout 3 is due out on PS3, Xbox 360 and PC later this year.

it's true that walking hour's on end with nothing to do isn't exciting but having great towns to explore more interresting and realistic, even if you do often get lost, 50% of oblivion seems a bit too small to me, hope it's more like 80% than i'll be happy with the free roaming place

So by september then? I am kinda out of the loop as far as this game is concerned. My guess on the physical size of the plain it would be around perhaps 67per cent of that of Oblivian if thats what they deduced.

psn id: gingo.... i doubt any game will come close to the sheer size and magnitude of oblivion it is MASSIVE and that is one of the reasons why i dont like it, its just far too big

psn id^^ I agree with gingo, oblivion is fun and all but its just too big... this news is great considering the fact that its a shooter but smaller than the oblivion world... its a fps, but like a big world smaller than oblivion... going to be a great game ++

its not the size but how you use it lol :P but really oblivion was humongous i played the game through like 5 times and its just ridiculous how big it is...as long as theyre actually using all the space is what matters

good. i would rather have a smaller world with more interesting theme rather than a big world with a cliche' medieval one.
