Developer Bethesda has cast a shadow of doubt over the possibility of releasing a demo for its upcoming RPG title, Fallout 3.
Speaking on the company’s official message board today, Bethesda’s Community Manager, Matt Grandstaff, commented: "One thing to consider about demos though. For certain kinds of games, I'd say its not as easy to just break off a piece, and say, here's the demo. Sure you can take a game of Madden, let someone choose between two teams, and then make it one quarter. Or as of yesterday, just release a few songs for Guitar Hero III.”
Grandstaff then went on to describe the difficulties involved in producing a demo of an open-ended title such as Fallout 3 or Oblivion, adding, “For a game like Fallout (or Oblivion), there's a lot of details that have to go into it since the game plays as a sandbox... where do you cut the user off.”
“You might bring up that we have a playable demo that we've shown at events, but from the previews you read, you'll notice that the G.O.A.T exam is never taken, we never decided to save Megaton instead of blowing it up, and so on. Part of the reason for this is that for the purpose of showing the game, they didn't need to flesh out those details.”
While the situation remains ambiguous, he did seem to hint that the developer may instead chose to focus on the final product rather than pitching the idea of a demo release in the near future.
“If we were doing a demo, there'd be a lot of time spent on deciding where a user could go, what quests to include, etc”, he said.
“For Fallout 3, we'd rather commit the time that can be used for delivering a demo into spending more time working on the final product.”
Fallout 3 is scheduled for release on PlayStation 3, PC and Xbox 360 in Q4 2008.

Well, they do have a good reason.
P.S: First comment!
Why can't they do it like Crackdown did: section off a piece of the city and put a time limit on the demo.
That's understandable. I'm not too worried about them screwing a game up.
It's easy! Just make a new player area *cough* tutorial *cough* and make people play there! Done! Just like they did with Skate
one word.... LAME!
Thank god, with all the complaints about development costs, etc. I am glad they are just spending the time on developing the game. Bethesda has not let me down yet, I will most likely get this game with or without a demo.
Im very inerested in this one. I dont need a demo to make me want the game. Im willing to bet this will be a good one.
psn id: gingo... i tihnk we just have to accept that for sandbox type games we wont ever get a demo because its too hard since its a free roaming world
thats not good is it boi
I'd rather see them spend the time needed to make the game top notch instead of spending time creating a demo. I think I'll be getting this game now since I know they're commited to making a quality title.
What Triple DK Said, "It's easy! Just make a new player area *cough* tutorial *cough* and make people play there! Done! Just like they did with Skate"
Demos are good and all,but if that means the final product will be delayed or something like that. Then i say f uck demos
Well it looks awsome but has anyone played 1 or 2? If so what is the story i am kinda clueless.
Yea, but they didn't make Skate. EA did...
