Blu-ray holds more than 90% market share in Japan

Posted on September 4th, 2007 at 18:48 EDT

At the International Franchise Association, the Blu-ray Disc Association gave a run through of the format's status worldwide. To support the presentation, were execs from Disney, Warner Bros and Fox.

Announcements included Acer becoming a member of the BDA and China's HuaLu Group joining the group as a major manufacturer.

In the presentation, the BDA also mentioned that the format holds a whopping 90% market share in Japan for both movies and hardware. Blu-ray has 63% standalone unit market share and over 66% of hi-def disc sales in the US, and around 70% of hi-def sales in Europe with a 3:1 ratio over HD-DVD.

It's interesting to see the remarkable progress Blu-ray has made in short time period. Check back on PSU for more information on the Blu-ray format.

Interesting facts.  One thing that grabbed my attention was Acer's involvment with Blu-ray.  I know they used HD-DVD in some of their past laptops.  Considering Acer now supports Blu-ray, and seeing as how they just bought Gateway, and Emachines, the only big name computer manufacturer that fully supports HD-DVD is ,of course, Toshiba.

Worldwide, Bluray now holds 100% of the market for blurays... Also the use of Bluray movies is much higher on Bluray players than HD-DVD. The ratio of Bluray drives installed into PS3 compared with MiniDisc or audio cassettes is like 100% these days.  Bluray has overtaken the sales of papirus paper as a medium of storing digital content.......I thought I might share these important stats with you all. :P

ATTENTION  ALL PS3 GAMERS:   If you haven't bought a Blu-ray movie, then you need to get out and buy one.  Those jerks at Toshiba are saying PS3 gamers do not care about Blu-ray.  We need to stick it to those cry babies.

Lets show some support for Blu-ray!!!   Buy a movie.   They also rent at Blockbuster
