Sony has always touted the PS3's Blu-ray capabilities, after doing the same with the world's most successful console, the PS2, and its DVD support.
According to Frank N. Magid Associates, over two-thirds of all PS2 owners have used their PS2 as a DVD player at some point, and more than 15 percent of owners report that they use their PS2 to play DVD movies regularly. Now, several months after the PS3's launch, over 80 percent of PlayStation 3 owners have reported using the system as a DVD player and 20 percent said they use it for DVD playback frequently.
Consumers who watch high definition content on their TVs have grown accustomed to quality and detail of the picture, according to Magid. As the growth of HDTV sales continues along with the increase in demand for HD content, the PS3 will strongly appeal for those who want not only a game console, but also an effective Blu-ray, high definition movie player.

I have used it and I have to say that after you do it is hard to watch movies that aren't in HD.
Duh they aren't, the DVD's are a bit sharper but unless you get a blu-ray, it won't be HD.
May abandon PS3 as a BD player soon if DTS-HD Master Audio isnt added before other Setup boxes are released. Getting tired of BDs hardware inconsistancies. :( But back on subject, I dont think that BD playback is a driving force for the PS3, the fact that it has (NOT YET) kick *ss exclusive titles (Haze,Little Big Planet,MGS4)

duh!
so so so so so so so so so whattttttttt!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Guess its just evolution? right?
VHS DVD Blue ray...
Try to watch a VHS tape...
Yep, I use for b) movies and games........
they need to stop blu-ray and start touting its games cuz i right now i could really care less about watching blu-ray movies
I love watching Blu-ray on my HDTV and 6.1 surroundsystem
See,the experts always say the right stuff.
Who gives a S*it about movies - I purchased this playststation for games and Im tired of waiting for something half decent to come out. Most of all Im tired of this repetitive "you want to watch Bluray Movies" blowjob they keep spamming us with. Fact is I dont care if Bluray movies dissapears next year I do care that they are not focusing on releasing QUALITY GAMES that justify my purchase. Games not dumb movies.
i love beaing able to wach movies on my PS3. saves me from having to go by a cheep DVD player...
tired of these 360 fannyboys bashing the ps3 when if they read up on it they would see overall hands down its a real next gen system hd-dvd ha dont make me laugh so i just had to get some 360 bashing out my system on gamespot hope those halo boys liked what i said lol.
psn id: gingo.... once u have seen a film or game in HD anything else just looks shabby its that good
@ paddyirishman... since when was VHS out right after columbus landed in the americas?.....lol.... thanks for the laugh.... the 1800's....ha ha...
@ thecleaners... i will fight to the death the right for you and i to speak our minds.... but you are such a low percentage.... you paid $600 to just play games... that my friend is your fault.... no ones cares about one guys opinion... unless that guy speaks for a crowd.. your just kinda standing there by yourself dude, trying to bring these kids down to your level.... grow up... get a personality, a life, and maybe even an open mind to other media.... cuz games just don't do it for people sometimes....
My DVDs look amazing up-converted. BD does look better for sure though. I am actually using 4 PS2s right now as dvd players. When the price for the PS3 gets down to 129, I'll probably have 4 or 5 of those as well.
ARATACUS... I think more people are interested in buying a Playstation to Play games than as a HD Movie player... "The crowd" you speak of hasnt purchased a PS3 because they dont relate to it anymore since it was hijacked by some Blowray pushing cretins at Sony. That is exactly why the PS3 sales are crap. That is my point.
Look at the number of people who come to this site - there are very few. That's because most of the crowd have moved on and spent their money elsewhere - They are populating other sites talking about playing games on game consoles & PC's.... Yes I rushed in thinking PS3 would still be about games - and yes Im disapointed. But I wont join a minority who think HD Movies and in particular only ones made on Blowray is what PS3 is all about. BRING BACK THE PLAY IN PLAYSTATION - THIS BLOW RAY SUX.
strong words from a week man. the games you want are on their way. patience is a virtue and the virtuous will be reworded. untill then, calm down, sit back and enjoy the amazing visual quality of Blue-ray High Deffinition! If you still just want the games, than try to enjoy your backwards compatibility, or just by a new system. Id like to ad that i do apriciate your argument and partialy agre with you. However, i am a man of patience.
@The Cleaner! You're an ignorant prick. You don't even have a PS3 so how come you're always whining about it? If you own one like your childish words seem to imply, then you wouldn't be calling Blu-ray, Blowray now would you? I think you're just here as an xbot who likes nothing better than to troll the PlayStation forums. Anyways, this article says nothing new about the percentage of people who use their PS3's as movie players. I believe that Sony needs to get their marketing strategy in shape to increase the sales just slightly. We all know that the PlayStations always sold short at first but they always make up for it in the end. I will also say that ever since watching Blu-ray, I'll never go back to SD again. The quality of games and movies on Blu-ray tell me that I'lll never see movies or games the same way again because of the quality jump.
what Sony doesn't tell you is that5 when the ps2 was coming out, DVD was already extablished as the standard, these guys are a PR mess IMO
@Clarick - The backward compatibility was never fully implimented in PAL versions - we got the emulation only (no hardware compatibility) I'd say a good third of my games either have annoying glitches or outright dont work. Im tempted to import a Jap version and dump my Aussie model except region coding will stuff everything up so Im stuck. As for waiting and spending my time watching movies - thats not exactly what I planned doing when I spent my money. I thought Id be playing these so called "next gen games"
@Morganator Blow me then Blow Ray. You are easily impressed son. What ground breaking, breath taking games where you talking about? Ive not played anything that spectacular - and I've yet to see a review of a PS3 game on Gamespot, IGN or any other publication that rates a PS3 game very high as to be breath taking... I only wish.
The best thin that ever happend to me is the PS3 ... I love the blue-ray and the PS3 games they are the best I love it...
