According to the display case for The Bourne Conspiracy, the PlayStation 3 version of the game requires an install of 5GB, which is larger than the average DVD-R disc (4.5GB).
With this seemingly becoming a more frequent procedure for PS3 games, we wonder just how Sony expects us to have room on a 40GB PS3. For example, if you own Devil May Cry 4(5GB), Hot Shots Golf Out of Bounds(5GB), The Bourne Conspiracy(5GB), and then purchase the upcoming Metal Gear Solid 4(4.6GB), there goes a good 20GB of your hard-drive space.
Perhaps instead of offering SKU's with smaller hard-drives, Sony should consider releasing an "Elite" PS3 with 100GB of hard drive space in order to help circumvent the issue.

Space is becoming a big issue for a lot of owners I think.
I plan to upgrade to a 320GB HDD as soon as I get the money.
psn id: gingo.... i will be upgrading to a much larger hard drive not to long into the future aswell but i think its a disgrace companies force these installs for ps3 games they should be optional to help the game run smoother
I own a 40gb and it is becoming clear that i will have to upgrade. GT5P(PSN version), GTA4, and soon MGS4, plus psn demos and full games. I don't have much space left. 250gb drive should suffice.
me too I'm seriously thinking about uprading myHDD, but for the moment 60GB is good enough for me as I only have game data on my ps3!
i dont see y ppl wont just deleat there game data after they beaten a game with no online play like dmc4 and uncharted pluse rachet and clank its useless data that takes up space u can remove it and get the extra gigs back It will be an issue if they have the trophy sys out then ppl would have to upgrade or buy more gigs which is cheaper then buying an elite ps3.
Delete stuff when you don't need it. Are users really too thick to multitask (do something else they normally do) whenever installing a game?
There is a lot of space on these hard drives. I have about 8 PSN games. Music and Photos that take up about 10GB. 20GB for Linux, with an library of eight games, they take up another 15GB. GTA 4 and Warhawk are probably my biggest. Delete some of your old game data and you will have space. Also, if you can store you music on a memory card you will be good.
... But I have 60GB PS3. I want a larger one too, Sony been told everyone that it would be a great idea to upgrade your hard drive before the 40GB rumor even started.
the only thing i'm curious about is the fact that an install is required...why are the PS3 games being forced to install data when the 360 equivalents aren't? thats why i bought DMC4 for the 360...so i didn't have to fill up my HDD with even more data. Between Virtua Fighter, Gran Turismo 5, Everybody's golf and whatever else is there it's getting stupid, i think my HDD has almost 30GB of forced installs now...it's retarded...
yeha I have a 20 gig. imagine my sadness :[...
sony should of seen this coming its turning into a bit of a joke now!!! more and more mandatary installs gettin bigger and bigger!!! we shouldn't have to delete install delete instal all the time STOP IT NOW!!!! its not a huge problem for me as i have a 320 external and a 60gig ps3 but spare a thought for the 20gig no external.
does anyone want to know why they have manditory installs on our system? its because everysingle PS3 system comes with a HDD, unlike the xbox 360. The Ps3 is just like the PC now. Manditory installs are the future of gaming, deal with it and think ahead. you have ten years with your ps3, your going to need a bigger harddrive.
this is getting out of hand...i do not mind the mandatory installs for GTA4 and MGS4 being how wide open the games are but I can not see why this game requires this. This seems more like lazy programming to me.

no big deal, you can always uninstall when you are done with the game.
Sony, has had the foresight to allow several options to allow expansion of it's PS3. Either add an external via USB or upgrade the internal HD. Either way people want more intense, better graphics, etc. It comes with a price -- in this case it's available storage. Personally, give me a really GREAT engaging game, and I can deal with expansion.
A 20 gig model is pretty much a joke at this point. I have the 40 gig model that I just bought about 2 months ago and it was already filled up and had about 10 gigs free. I couldn't delete anything because everything on it I played. I went ahead and upgraded to a 320G hd for $130.
Sony really needs the base model to be 80gb and the higher end model to be larger. 250 gig drives can be had online for under $90. At least they had the forsight to see the need for the user to upgrade them themselves.
look ppl on this forum are sayin jus delete a game when your done with it but i for one like to take my time with games and am playing a number of games at a time, another thing is waitin 5+min everytime if i keep deleting my save files after playing, i want to pick up and play straight.
P.S. remember if they made 250GB Ps3 then the price will have to go up and we know that customers will not except that. i think they should make installs optional as i for one would not mind to have longer loadtimes.
Listen anyone!!!!! If you update for ps3 HD send me an message to my psn id and let me know what HD work with the ps3. You time will be very thankful.
psn id: I95SOUTH<--- just crown me already.

I upgraded my 20 gig to a 80 gig, but now i am runnin out of space!!!!!!!!!!
I only have 7gb left and I bought the launch 60gb.!
These installs dont worry me so much... but yeah it'd be better without them. I say Sony release HDD upgrades - so we can buy proper PS3 branded hard drives straight from them to install ourselves (like what Microsoft are doing, only without the hefty price tag!)
I hope Sony releases a new pack that comes with at lest 120gb hdd. This would be of great help.................
i have a coverted 500gig external hardrive with my 60gig internal. but still just not ready to go buy the game. im saveing money for full price hits like littlebig planet, killzone2, and lets not forget buyables on home.
Maybe if Sony didn't have third parties severly overcharging for external hard drives and made one themselves, nobody would have a problem. I don't have a problem swapping hard drives but most people don't want to mess with it.
I'm sick of the increasing size of teh manditory installs! There's no need for it!
I've got a 60gb model and just upgraded it to 250gb tonight actually and wonder how long that'll last.
I think it's great that Sony made it so crazy easy to slip in a new larger drive, tho I kinda wish it was a standard sized SATA drive instead of the 2.5" moble drives! You can get much bigger HDs (around a terrabyte -1000gb) for almost teh same as a 2.5" at half the space.
Some of the earlier PS3 games have an optional game data install. I like playing my old games from time to time but keeping the installed games data take too much of the HDD. Reinstalling the game data each time to play the games is inpractical when it takes so long to install them. But upgrading to a larger HDD costs money.
My only argument is why can't the newer games publishers make the install game data optional like the older games? Is it that hard to let PS3 owners who don't have large HDD to have slower loading time in trading off of mandatory large game data install? My opinion is the game developers/publishers are getting lazy in doing it because large game data install is not their problem. Why spend the extra development in making dual install option if they can make the gamers spend the extra money to upgrade the HDD?
Here is a web link that will help people running out of space on thier PS3. You have to buy an external HDD, but its cheaper than upgrading your PS3. Its a long process but it works

why 5GB? why not 4.5 or 6.3? how can it nearly always be a 5GB install? :P I have a 320GB HDD so installing games is no problem for me;)
