COD5 is seeking to redefine the WWII genre

Posted on June 13th, 2008 at 11:26 EDT

With the announcement last week that Activision had planned to bring the recent Modern Warfare shooter back to the World War II setting, a lot of gamers were nothing short of disappointed. While the guys over at Activision and Treyarch understand the position of some gamers, they feel they can change the minds of plenty with a genre defining installment into the franchise itself.

MCV had the chance to talk to senior producer, Noah Heller, and he had this to say about the upcoming title.

"Modern Warfare opened the door to so many people new to Call of Duty. The game built great fertile ground for us to start on and if we're going to say: 'Look it's Christmas, here's another Call of Duty as you loved it last year,' then we need to make sure the game is high quality or people won't trust what Call of Duty is."

Heller obviously understands the importance of building on the last installment's success and added in that "this [COD5] has to be the best shooter and has to redefine the World War II genre."

From the way it sounds, it looks like we can expect a new Call of Duty title every year by Christmas. Whether this will potentially hurt the franchise or not like it has so many other yearly releases will be discovered over time.

im excited, im a huge fan of COD4 and play it way to much... with the realism that COd4 brought to the market , i just cant wait to see how amazing the recreation of the world war two battles are this tims, and lets face it we haven't covered all of the battles so lets not get to upset, after all COD4 is an awesome game and should be around for a very long time so if your pisssed about this and love COD 4 , then just stick with it.

there are too many wwii games, can we get over. how many different ways are they gonna kill nazis? I see this being a big mistake, they are going to lose a lot of money, they should scrap it now and start all over

i know im just echoing the sentiment from the article but, i don't think i was alone in hoping for more modern or even future based combat. this makes me a sad panda and i can't say im very interested in cod5 at this point. it could be great though, is IW involved does anyone know?

edit: read a second time, i see treyarch is back (lol now the wwii staging seems obvious, stick with what you know you lazy bums). now I hope to see more out of IW! if this frees them up to work on something that expands beyond the realm of CoD and Activision's impared view of what we want from a game. than this might be for the best.

if you remember cod1 cod4 and cod2 were made by infinity ward. treyarch made all the additional games liek big red one. Activision gave them a shot at a real cod and they messed up big time with cod3. especially on the ps3 version. As if going back to ww2 isn't bad enough, they gotta give it to those idiots? NO thanks...

With development being led on the 360, I'm not holding out much hope on this being any good on the PS3. Pass...

HAHA, right, thats like what every developer says. unless you defy history and get some new weapons, then it's still the same.  well atleast resistence 2 will have less competition.

i agree GIVE IT A CHANCE watch the gameplay rent it from store read reviews before u make decision. or are u that narrow minded that u dont think someone can fix the mistakes of someting and change it so it is better by far then its predesesor and unique to other games. i think it is very doable and they deserve to be given a second chance to prove themselves

!!!!PROPAGANDA ALERT!!!! Activision tht was disgraceful you should be ashamed... and Treyarch I suggest you quit developing games all together Grandpa. Noone wants to know about WWII Events. Take the hint why do you think COD 4 sold so much. Also, you did a very stupid yet bold move which most lazy S.O.B developers do is, choose 360 as a lead console. Dawg look, everyone knows the game will be short, since ur including more capabilities with online than COD 4. Son... ur just dancing on fire. [PSN ID: Y-Dawg] Bow Wow

Lol, what else is comming in November..  I trust most if not all the FPS PS3 fans will flock to R2 instead.  At least that's isn't an Activision Milking farm that COD has become.  I'm not buying this.  Only IW games please.

I hope this game turns out good because I don't mind WW2 shooters. COD2 was a great game(for pc) so If they can do that with the COD4 engine it could end up being a great game.
