With the announcement last week that Activision had planned to bring the recent Modern Warfare shooter back to the World War II setting, a lot of gamers were nothing short of disappointed. While the guys over at Activision and Treyarch understand the position of some gamers, they feel they can change the minds of plenty with a genre defining installment into the franchise itself.
MCV had the chance to talk to senior producer, Noah Heller, and he had this to say about the upcoming title.
"Modern Warfare opened the door to so many people new to Call of Duty. The game built great fertile ground for us to start on and if we're going to say: 'Look it's Christmas, here's another Call of Duty as you loved it last year,' then we need to make sure the game is high quality or people won't trust what Call of Duty is."
Heller obviously understands the importance of building on the last installment's success and added in that "this [COD5] has to be the best shooter and has to redefine the World War II genre."
From the way it sounds, it looks like we can expect a new Call of Duty title every year by Christmas. Whether this will potentially hurt the franchise or not like it has so many other yearly releases will be discovered over time.

im excited, im a huge fan of COD4 and play it way to much... with the realism that COd4 brought to the market , i just cant wait to see how amazing the recreation of the world war two battles are this tims, and lets face it we haven't covered all of the battles so lets not get to upset, after all COD4 is an awesome game and should be around for a very long time so if your pisssed about this and love COD 4 , then just stick with it.
I was excited waiting for a COD5 you in the future and not in the past. Now I dont care what they tell me or do I wont buy this game at all. Im tired of WWII games
No it won't its the same old Sh!t
you guys need to give it a chance geeeeeez lol. they kno u hate ww2 so they're tryin to fix that. sounds great to me.
there are too many wwii games, can we get over. how many different ways are they gonna kill nazis? I see this being a big mistake, they are going to lose a lot of money, they should scrap it now and start all over
if i were activision i would let infinity wards make cod5 they know how to make cod games treyarch s u c k cod3 was trash i'm not gonna get cod5 now
i know im just echoing the sentiment from the article but, i don't think i was alone in hoping for more modern or even future based combat. this makes me a sad panda and i can't say im very interested in cod5 at this point. it could be great though, is IW involved does anyone know?
edit: read a second time, i see treyarch is back (lol now the wwii staging seems obvious, stick with what you know you lazy bums). now I hope to see more out of IW! if this frees them up to work on something that expands beyond the realm of CoD and Activision's impared view of what we want from a game. than this might be for the best.
Hopefully, this won't be as bad as COD3.
With development being led on the 360, I'm not holding out much hope on this being any good on the PS3. Pass...
A rundown of the series for the under-informed: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Call_of_Duty_%28series%29
a well as least they now how to make a stable online game...
The WWII genre has defined and redifined enough, thanks.
well i guess cod4 was the only and last call of duty game i will but. o thanks activision and treyarch.
This is also coming out on the PS2 and the Wii.... Hmmm. NOt sure it will better than COD2 let alone COD4. Will keep an open mind though, you never know!
I got a good point, soo you guys rather have nothing then a COD 5. i was told its a nother team they take turns every other game.COD 1 WWII COD 2 Modern COD 3 WW II COD 4 Modern See the patter i know u guys can guess what 5 is going to be. and also how long does it take to make a good game anyone knows. oh i do if its going to be as good as COD4 about 2 years. and MGS4 took 4 years soo you can see why games are good and bad.....
HAHA, right, thats like what every developer says. unless you defy history and get some new weapons, then it's still the same. well atleast resistence 2 will have less competition.
wuts up wit WW2 that it has to repeated in many games wut makes that war so spectacular
COD4 fanboys must die..give the game a chance !!
i agree GIVE IT A CHANCE watch the gameplay rent it from store read reviews before u make decision. or are u that narrow minded that u dont think someone can fix the mistakes of someting and change it so it is better by far then its predesesor and unique to other games. i think it is very doable and they deserve to be given a second chance to prove themselves
It could be good give it a chance. Maybe Germans vs everyone this time (unless thats been done). I dont care what it is as long as its fun.
Pfft if your redoing the WWII genre then good look to infinity ward considering its pretty much saturated its own market right now.
all you guys are pussies!!!! Im down to shoot from krauts!!!!!
Lol, what else is comming in November.. I trust most if not all the FPS PS3 fans will flock to R2 instead. At least that's isn't an Activision Milking farm that COD has become. I'm not buying this. Only IW games please.
I really dont mind WWII games which im a fan of thoses certain type of games but not really looking forward to this one partically the new Brothers In Arms about to sceduled in Aug release which im looking foward to it.
I hope this game turns out good because I don't mind WW2 shooters. COD2 was a great game(for pc) so If they can do that with the COD4 engine it could end up being a great game.
