Call of Duty 4 Ultimate Hands On Edition

Posted on October 16th, 2007 at 15:43 EDT

By now everyone in the gaming world has heard of Call of Duty 4’s incredibly robust multiplayer offering. If you’ve had the chance to jump into the multiplayer beta provided on Xbox Live, then you know that Infinity Ward is providing one of the best online experiences ever. However, what you might not know is how well the single player part of the game is holding up. Well continue reading and you'll find out.

Earlier this month, PSU.com flew down to San Francisco to get hands on with Call of Duty 4 and the single player build of the game. We were given a few hours to try out two very different levels, one taking place aboard a ship and the other in the middle of a war torn city at night. From start to finish my mouth was on the floor.

To begin, we'll start with the first available mission; "Crew Expendable." The level opens up with you looking over a stormy sea while flying towards a helpless barge hewn by endless ocean waves. Once the helicopter has reached the ship, you and your squad slip down a rope onto the main deck only to immediately open fire on unsuspecting hostiles.

As the you progress through the level, one thing that we noticed is that your team mates seem to be a bit aggressive and if you fall behind, your squad may wipe out all the enemies before you catch up to them. However, there is a section where you get pinned down by constant suppressive fire from hostiles standing above in the main control room, but rather than blindly charging in and getting yourself killed, you instead wait for your helicopter to fly in and dispatch your foes with a barrage of 50cal support fire.

To finish the mission, you and your team must secure an item containing top-secret information. The item itself is located in the guts of the barge which, when collected, triggers a scene where the craft is torpedoed. As sheets of metal tear from the walls and water spills into the ship, it's a race against time to reach surface to the awaiting helicopter. This end sequence is very well done and very intense. Not only are you timed in how fast you escape, but also the camera shakes and tilts with the angle of the boat as it sinks, accentuating the severity of the moment considerably.

The second level we played was called “The Bog,” a mission where your primary objective is to save the crew of an Abrams tank that’s been stranded in the desert. We first saw this level back in August but at the time it was no touchy, eyes on only. Now actually having the chance to sit down and play the whole level through, brings all new amazement to our experience.

During the course of the level you will get the chance to kill enemies by shooting them through walls, utilize night vision with laser sights, and destroy tanks with lock-on rockets. With just only playing two levels, we'd have to say that Call of Duty 4's single player campaign is just as good if not better than it's multiplayer counterpart.

Pros:
- Call of Duty 4 provides stunning graphics at 60fps
- Tight controls on all versions (PS3, Xbox 360, and PC)
- Intense single player campaign worth playing more than once
- Endless fun with multiplayer; customize your gear, perks, and more

Cons:
- PS3 version will have no limited edition
- May find some jaggies on the PS3 version...not as smooth in some areas as you may find on the PC or Xbox 360.*

*To clarify the differences found between the console versions, when we said you may find jaggies and that the PS3 version wasn't as smooth, this is only a rare occurance and usually the jaggies appear on the edges of distant objects or the edges of buildings in the environment. Once again, this is very seldom, and will not effect the gameplay and to the general eye will look identical to other versions.

All together, Call of Duty 4 holds ... (continued on next page)

Just give it some time guys. Devs need time to unlock the power of the cell. this thing is going to be off the hook in 3 years. cant we all just get along? hug a 360 owner. also, go to their house and see what real gaming is all about.

instead of getting cod4 i'll wait for either haze or ut3. haze is a ps3 exclusive (i think). ut3 is being developed on ps3 (im pretty sure i read that some where). those 2 should be better quality

i dont like the fact that most games on the ps3 lacks of on graphics whats up with that. I have never heard about the xbox  360 games having a bad graphics. Why is that SONY? i thought ps3  was suppose to be the next GEN of gaming meaning that gaming will be like no other and will look soo realistic but it seems like its not like the next GEN...step up your game sony! I know you workin hard and all but come on NEXT GEN means nothing you seen before and if isnt gonna be dat than dont call it next GEN of gaming because when people hear dat they think its going to be a nice experince and want to buy it.......WHO AGREES WITH ME

lazy developers, the PS3 version has awesome graphics, running on a great 60fps but has abit of jaggies on it ONLY because the devs never had the the new SN 2.0 tools. If they had those new tools that Sony finally provided for free. Then...yea lol you get. Xbox 360 and Wii are such CHEAP consoles, its so EASY making games run smooth on them. Now that we have the new SN tools free for all devs and especially those lazy devs. We be getting nonstop high quality games like always. So Microsoft can just cry themselvs to sleep! lol :D

Repeat, this is a recording.Maybe all PS3 owners should just ban buying  ported games until these Devs and Sony get their act together. Not going to happen is it?We'll just take it on the chin like we always do and then just keep buying them. What message are we sending if we don't take a harder stand on this bull?By the way,I'm going to buy COD 4 for my PS3.LMAO.I don't really have a choice.

U guys are mistaking graphics with jaggyness... They didnt say anything was wrong with the graphics just maybe in certain spots the game may have like a tad of lag, its something that shouldnt really affect you when u play but still no excuse for it being there.  Im assuming because this game was prob ported and atm ps3 is kinda hard to work with for most devs that this is the reason why not totally lazy devs but something also I know if they try they can avoid.  Also future games should be less problems since sony just relased SN 2.0 tools to make it easier for them.

I was originally planning on buying this...and now I'm not. No way in hel.l. There is absolutely no reason by now developers shouldn't be making a game, especially a massively anticipated game like this, run optimal for both systems. And if was running optimal on both systems, the PS3 version should be 2 times better since the PS3s hardware kicks as.s. Developers in general are starting to get past the point that "it's harder to develop for." It seems like a multi million dollar corporations like Activision and Infinity Ward would be the first to get it right, but obviously not. I'm holding off on this one, I won't support lazy developers in the least. Other multiplatform games that are actually taking advantage of the PS3s hardware to run better on the PS3 *cough* Assassin's Creed*cough* I will actually be supporting. Other than that I have about 5 games I'm getting before 2008. Can't wait. I'm just goona put this one on the trash list.

May find some jaggies on the PS3 version...not as smooth in some areas as you may find on the PC or Xbox 360.

Whats with the "May"s what kind of writer/author/journalist writes may.  Do you, or do you not know.  You can't put a CON it might be worse in graphics, it might be a little lagger, it might have freaking wings too.

What kind of crappy writing is that?  Btw to the idiot above that doesn't know jaggies means a graphicly poor texture base which shows a jaggy line as in no antianalizing, except what doesn't make sense is the devs themselves said AA is in for both Xbox and PS3.  So jaggies would be the same for both.  I hope nobody lets anyone from this site play a game again.  Poor article in length or detail.

Everyone else has said they were equal or PS3 is better.

http://www.dailygame.net/news/archives/006696.php

Thats what a professional article looks like no MAYBEs, cause I'm starting to think this guy MAYBE didn't actually play the game.  Maybe doesn't know what hes talking about.

So once again ps3 owners are misguided and given the shaft.I thought that the ps3 version was supposed to be superior.Jaggies?WTF this is supposed to be the next generation of gaming.

IF the writer of this article is correct, and the PS3 version does contain the odd jaggy area, then it is down to the developers "that will do" atttiude which to be honest in this day and age JUST WONT do. Fair enough by the sounds of it the reviewer is being very picky and I doubt that it will impede the game in any way but its there, and it shouldnt be.

Ive said it before and i will a million times again. If it wasnt for Sony and their playstation franchise pretty much all games developers wouldnt be half as wealthy as they are. Sony have sold Millions and I mean Millions of games over the last 15 odd years making developers and publishers very rich. So what do these developers now do to repay them? thats right! make half hearted ports for all their loyal fans some of which have supported them for the last 15 years.

I've come to the conclusion that half the people who use this site can't read!

It says there are SOME jaggies on RARE occasions on DISTANT objects - otherwise the game is identical. And in terms of gameplay, it is identical to the 360 version - just as fast and smooth.

The 360's graphics are by ATI, while the PS3's are by nVidia. ATI have for some time had the edge over nVidia when it comes to anti-aliasing. It's exactly the same with their PC graphics cards.

This game IS NOT a 360 port, and has been developed for the PS3 - hence the online has been built especially so that the PS3 version enjoys the same functionality as the 360 gets on Live.

Jesus, try actually READING what is in front of you! You know, just for a change.

Take it as it is, other sites (neutral) say the PS3 version looks slighlty better but runs identically to the 360 version. I doubt the guy here played both versions at the same time to compare graphics/framerates.

A lot of you are assuming he played both versions , plus remeber they would not have been final buils, wait and see, it's one persons opinion which differs from what others have written.

He says " as you may find on the 360" giving the impression he has not played the single player on the 360.
