Last year, publisher Activision successfully evolved the First Person Shooter (FPS) genre in terms of gameplay with their release of the critically acclaimed Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare. Beyond graphics, COD4 took online multiplayer for the FPS genre and shook it to newer heights.
Indeed, before its release in November 2007, many people believed that the Xbox 360 title, Halo 3, was the progressive multiplayer FPS. Aside from a sure Call of Duty 5 and possible Call of Duty 6, what else does Activision have under their sleeves with the franchise?
While speaking at a Morgan Stanley Technology Conference in California, Activision CEO Bobby Kotick revealed some startling information that is surely going to come as a pleasant surprise. At the conference, Kotick revealed that the company is looking into the possibility of bringing the Call of Duty franchise into the Massively Multiplayer Online game (MMO) market:
"When you think about other properties that we own and control like Call of Duty, and what would be the natural evolution of a property like Call of Duty into a massively multiplayer environment”, said Kotick.
Stay tuned for more information as it becomes available.
What we think:
Just how astonished would current COD fans be and how electric would newcomers be to the series if it indeed went the MMO route? Imagine 60+ player online battles throughout large and detailed maps with vehicle support such as helicopters, tanks, and jeeps?
Then take into consideration the individual character customization such as height, weight, and facial features. Also territorial factions such as Middle East, United States, UK, and Russian in which we can choose from and play as. The possibilities are endless, and Activision would surely be sitting on a gold mine if they did indeed decide to go this route. It should be interesting to see how this news turns out.

I have been wanting a high quality FPS MMO for years. I would pay monthly for this in a heart beat.
Well if you guys think they can make a 60+ player mmo on thecrapbox? Guess what? Not happening. Xbots are lucky when they get a game that can have 16 people. Maybe in the next generation for them but that is now for the ps3
I love playing ass Russians
psn id: gingo... it would certainly be innovative but i dont know how well they could execute it if they do decide to do it they better let infinity ward do it
psu... you miht wanna double check the third to last sentence... u.... kinda cursed your "but?" off..
You caught that too alti, LOL! "play ass"
@ IONIXX LOL about the swearing part, I cought that too. I couldn't have said it better about warhawk or COD.
honestly, what would a mmo for a fps be? 60 player battles? Resistence 2 has that and they dont claim to be an mmo? we need more info.
WOW PSU has a little typo there. LOL!
Never been an MMO player but would definately be for this!!!
If they went MMO they would pretty much HAVE to add in vehicles, ala BF2.
ok so yeah if it had planes jeeps and tanks it would be great, BUT, this is where people are dumb, why? cuz while WARHAWK may only have allow 32 players in games, it LAREADY HAS planes jeeps and tanks, sp people say how great COD would be in that for, but theres already somthin out there that offers such things, so WTF?, i dispise it, but considering how popular COD is, it would be good if it was a ps3 exclusive, but its not, unless this game led on the ps3 ( i dont know wat the lead console is) its just a 360 PORT, where'as warhawk is an authentic sony exclusive, but i dunno if the 360 would take a COD MMO easily, maybe it will become a ps3 exclusive, who knows. and how come psu gets to swear in their articles but we dont get to in our comments?
A little too much coffee this morning? Call of Duty>>>Warhawk, for starters. Also, COD4 was not a port. Both versions were built from the ground up. Now considering that COD5 will not be IW, who knows. That being said, they didn't say taht COD5 was going to be the MMO. It may be COD6.
BRING IT NOW! i been waiting for something this awesome!!!
Wtf? A Call of Duty MMO? How can you make an MMO of Call of Duty. MMO:s has to be RPGs.
Hmm... Can be interesting to play. (if there will be any MMO)
No monthly fee and i am there.

That part is the best. It sounds to me like Warhawk......only they will make you pay for it.
I wouldnt pay for it. Think about it. Resistance is going to be 60 player for free. Who cares about face customization when it's just just going to get shot off by a guy with a sniper rifle. All people want is to have fresh maps to kill each other on that's all we need.
milk it milk it milk it!! =D
btw WTF 60+ isnt mmo...
20,000+ is mmo... are you kidding me... ARE YOU KIDDING ME!!!!!!!!!!! MMO is a large world/place were tons and tons of people fight along side eachother or agaisnt... its BASICLY MASSIVLY MUILTIPLYER ONLINE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! wow.... retards..
a mmo would be cool.. not a cod4 with a few more people... thats way to dairy farm cow for me devs
1- the 60 people thing was a suggestion by the writer of this article, you guys read way too much into that.
2- Don't put the game in a box. There's a lot of room for innovation with an MMORPG that's also a first person shooter. Sony's "The Agency" will be a good indication of whether that goes over well. THE PERKS SYSTEM IN CALL OF DUTY IS A SMALL EXAMPLE OF WHAT THE "RPG" ELEMENTS CAN BE IN COD"online".
Right now it's perks, but what about earning your armor, and better armor? How about being able to use a silencer AND a red-dot sight? How about Pets? How about vehicles? Raids would be replaced by big missions. I'm stunned by your lack of imagination.
