David Reeves on why software takes longer to reach Europe

Posted on May 8th, 2008 at 05:46 EDT

Sony’s David Reeves has said that the reason why titles arrive in Europe far later than their North American counterparts is due to the fact there is not enough incentive for companies to work on multiple language translations during development.

Speaking to Eurogamer, the SCEE President said that he would "love to go day and date with some titles" in both continents, but observed this would only be possible for the UK – something which would inevitably attract criticism from other European countries.

"Well some developers would say they can do [translations during initial development]. Talk to Ted Price at Insomniac and he builds it in at the beginning. We're trying to educate all our developers to do that but it's something that's going to take a while," said Reeves.

"But even if you talk to Guerilla, Namco, Square Enix, they all do it in English to begin with and then think about localisation later. You're absolutely right, we should do it at the beginning. But they look at it like, 'How much can I get for a Dutch version of the game?'

"With PlayStation Store we could probably go in the UK almost day and date. But then what are the Germans and the French going to say to me? That I'm Anglo-centric,” he noted.

Easy!!! Print the label in the game saying: ENGLISH ONLY!!! And release the dubbed version later. I´m from Portugal and I dont get games translated into my language (except the Sony ones). So I dont mind having the US versions.

I think most dutch people don't even want a dutch game, just give english subtitles and we're satisfied. too bad the german and french have to ruin it :p

The translation issue is a poor excuse even if you are talking 3rd party developers,  why so long for GT5P from Japan to the Europe?????, come on there are serious failings here, for example Rock Band High & Velocity Bowling still not out, then hardware like the DS3.

AND in Europe the PS3 has outsold the 360!!!!!!!  I love the PS3 but even I am getting sick of being cr@pped on.

Quite frankly I think that’s a really dumb excuse! I’m from the UK, and I still don’t see why us english speaking gamers have to wait for all the other different language versions to be done before we get the games, when we could have them straight away. Sony is driving us UK and other english speaking gamers in Europe absolutely FURIOUS by doing this! By all means, add the different language versions later in an update, just stop making us wait for something we can have now! The criticism it might get from some other european non-english speaking gamers is nothing compared to the criticism its getting now from not releasing these games to its consumer base that does speak english! Sony really does need a kick up the backside sometimes!

to be honest practically all of europe knows english as well as thier native language so this is a lame excuse... im pretty sure we'd rather have had pain or high velocity bowling in english alone back in 2007 rather than the 5 months+ wait... well i wud have anyways

I had my system localised when I got it, so all text was danish, then I got Ratchet and Clank: Tod (no "Future" for EU ): )  and they started speaking danish!! I was frustrated and dissapointed! I turned my console to english, and it's gonna be there for the next 10 years! I for one don't like developers localizing!

The only translations you do for Denmark is (sometimes) manuals... don't worry about it ! we can manage without the danish manual lol .. just give us t3h game :p

I live in Denmark, and we hardly see any form of translations from english to danish.

And I would rather have a english only game, than to wait like 5 or 6 mounth for the game to be released in EU... Why not make the other languages to downloadable contects.(DC).???

What a load of cr*p, for starters there are hardly any games that come in other than english versions nowadays. Furthermore most gamers having a choice between an english and localized product would most probably choose the english one - reason ? The translations sux most of the time. Since Europe is such a big installment base for Sony why do they keep sc***ing us over and over =/ I mean c'mon PSN is enough to be mad about already >_<

I wish we could speak English instead of Norwegian in Norway, so much easier language that i learned before i began on school. I learned English by watching English TV shows like The Muppets. I wounder if the Germans took over Europe, would we all in Europe speak German? Im glad i don't:-]

I don't want games in Swedish anyway. I was so pissed when the Resistance 2 trailer was on Swedish. English all the way, I would be glad!

I think what some of you are forgetting is that Sony and Microsoft don't always have a choice in the matter.  Meaning government laws state that products sold in those countries must include specific language options.

I think its crappy you have to wait for things to get there, but its not just sony and videogames that come out much later, it is also movies and books among others.  You can't just say screw you sony, its not their fault in most cases.

The best example I can give for my situation in Canada was Rock Band.  The game was shipped without a French Instruction Manual and the games were returned.  It is Canadian Law for the games to include both languages in the manual as French and English are offical languages here.  It delayed us getting it by a few months.  I can only imagine how long that would have taken if they had to do 5+ languages.

Just release the stuff in english in EU!

English is a worldwide language for a reason. So everything don't need to get translated for every darn language!

So just give us a english version. Why do you think people are signing up for the US store when they live in EU? Because they don't care if its in english or in the mother language! And because of EU get stuff like 2 weeks after US.. And sometimes EU don't get stuff!!

Dear Sony listen to this. Atleast make a poll on the blogg about it, If it returns that people dont care about things being translated from english to the mother language. Then give EU english versions only!

Maybe SCEE could offer some incentives on translating from the beginning?  Just a thought.

ephracis @ Jag tror svenska är valfritt i vår version. Så var det med Sly spelen i alla fall. Personligen tror jag det blir kul att spela igenom det på svenska efter att man klarat det på engelska ett par gånger. (Sorry guys, couldn't resist)

OKay europe has its problems with countries speaking different languages, but in australia we wouldn't have that problem, no one cares what happens in australia its so far away from everything, just slip us the games early.........no one will notice

I would agree with him at some points... I mean it is fantastic for my kids that a game like rachet is translated into danish.. because they enjoy that they can follow the instructions and the storyline... but many games could be relased in a english version.. i mean a game like Rockband should have been launched ages ago.. and many other games could just be launched in english. But I do appreciate that they take the time to translate games for the younger audience.

Well I am in Holland and I dont have any problems with English speaking characters or subtitle.. FYI, french and germans always make things difficult for EU (but, unfortunately, have huge  influence in terms of economic power).. But hey! Its not only for games! even we have not seen any dual shock 3 yet..!! Subititling is just a lame excuse..

Contradicting goals: 1. Developers wants to focus on development, and rightfully so - they don't want the extra expense of translators; but 2. translation needs to happen during development if publishers want to get translated version out day-and-date with the English version.

Best of both worlds: Translators should be included from the beginning, but paid directly by the publishers. No additional expense to the developer, and the publishers get what they want. This is another benefit that *should* be afforded by the in-many-ways-broken developer/publisher model.
