Electronic Arts is looking to prove themselves as a major contender in other genres outside of sports and licensed games of the past. New to their lineup is the sci-fi horror title, Dead Space, which EA claims will be one of the scariest games of 2008.
If EA wants to create the scariest game of all time, they are going to have to master the art of immersion, making the gamer feel as if he or she is actually in the environment of Isaac Clark, the game's protagonist. This immersion is what has made games such as Resident Evil and Silent Hill so popular, both of which have spawned theatrical movies of their own. EA understands this concept and appears to be working it into the title.
If we're somewhat decent at mathematics, we've come to the conclusion that instense pressure minus an escape equals heart-pounding adrenaline. Imagine playing a game such as Silent Hill or Resident Evil and instead of pausing the game to heal yourself, you have to do it in-game while hordes of zombies chase you? Suddenly the gameplay and atmosphere just took a different route. This is what EA is thinking about doing with Dead Space, implementing most of the basic menu options into an in-game menu. The concept is simple but genious. Isaac Clarke brings up a holographic panel projected directly in front of him. From here, the player may heal him or herself in addition to many other basic menu options. This is all done in real time while you are still vulnerable to attack. This means that you will have to search for a safe place, away from possible threat before you can perform such action, just like in real life.
The whole concept certainly sounds quite intriguing and hopefully the rest of the game will turn out just as innovative. Dead Space is currently slated for a late 2008 release on the PS3, PC, and Xbox 360 platforms.

hope we can see some awesome footage of this game soon!
hmmm could be cool, but EA hasn't done much good lately...we'll see!
FIRST!!!
Sounds cool, a real horror immersion!
there's an idea that I've never heard of. it makes for some real thinkin on the gamers part, to be able to still get wounded in the pause menu. But what if i just wanna go take a piss or sumthing real quick? I have to start that level all over?
the game better be more tactical so that there will be areas to rest rather then a more violent creatures around every corner coming to you.
ill keep looking at this till release
hope there is live video play or something
ok well that will either make me or break me into buying the game. i need to see a live video of this footage before i decide
I never liked that feature in Resident Evil Outbreak. I liked pausing to go get food or something.
^^Then you would have to search in the dumpster at real-time. But yes this does add emersion but it leaves a lot to be desireed no? The extent of this feature is what will make or break the games fundamental aspects.
lets see how ea messes this 1 up =]
They didn't say you can't stop play, it just says that you won't be able to pause in the game to heal. And a big "HA, HA" to velocity for his awesome 3rd place FIRST! You have to be faster then that to join other "first" posters, not that I see why being first is such a "Cool" thing.
Sounds just as bad as BLACK with no save points.
Well, simply put, I'm not too fond of EA. But they've been stepping it up lately, with superiror version of Burnout, and other games being led on the PS3. I'm looking forward to this title, and as simple as this no pause feature may seem, it's actually a nice addition. I know I would have a heart attack not being able to stop and take my breath in some current horror games. Let's hope EA delivers on this one!
On a side note, if you have to pee or get food, there should be stopping points every little while after a wave of enemies, so it shouldn't be that bad. It's actually a good addition (or subtraction) IMO to leave out a pause menu.
psn id: gingo... sounds interesting and would certainly create the feeling of "no escape"
Let's see how this stacks up against RE4, which to me is where the bar is currently set for survival/horror type games. Well, at least until RE5!!!
it sounds like a good immersion tactic but what if i have to go potty???
I may actually try this game now... I can't remember if this was included in the Resi outbreak game or not... I played for all of ten minutes and never online... Suck's now that I am online with the PS3 cause Capcom had to take the severs down...
interesting...
While that concept is great, it is very stupid, are there checkpoints or how will you have to just quit out? I mean pretty dumb if someone has to take a huge piss
Sounded stupid until I read the article. Seems like something interesting. Too bad there a one in a million chance of EA actually getting a quality game out. Better hope nobody knocks on the door in the middle of getting chased.
Well, it seems like the inventory will be real time, but surely there will be a "pause" menu, perhaps the select button or something, you know with options and a quit command. I'm sure they wont leave you entirely dependant on finding a safe place to set the controller down for a second.
PS button maybe?
Anyone remember the Alone in the Dark trailer? The one with where your inventory was just your coat. That was pretty sweet, but I'm not sure if the game continued while you looked down or if it paused, I think it was in game. In which case, EA has yet again copied another game, not that I mind as long as they pull it off nicely.
Lol. Where's the handsdown button, have you guys removed it?! First time I was going to use it, then it's gone lol.
The best solution is this. Select button brings up your holomenu where the game still plays as you do whatever you need to, and start buttong simply pauses the game. You'd have no play control at all while paused much lie the old days, and if In game XMB ever happens atleas then you'd have a chance to access your mail rather than getting hacked to death whenever someone sends you a message asking if you want to play a game of COD4.
hopefully they'll make it to where you can actually "pause" the game to take a restroom break, or to stop for a while and take a healthy jog around the neighborhood (hah!). but, just make it a pause screen with no options during the pause, so that you still have to heal or equip weapons or whatever in real-time while you're unpaused.
so, if you're badly injured, under attack and in need of helth, i think you'll f@ck3d , this has to be more tactical than resident evil unless they make the ennemies weaker
holy crap!!! that would be soooo scary! i would wet myself everytime i had to heal or do something on the menu!
it creates good environment and makes it scary so you cant just pause and take break :D
This game sounds like it will be quite the h*ll of a scare.
hmm
