Dev admits problems with PS3 version of Dark Sector

Posted on February 27th, 2008 at 06:47 EDT

Digital Extremes has admitted to encountering some substantial issues when developing the PlayStation 3 version of its forthcoming title Dark Sector, stating that the game was not “running as well as the [Xbox] 360” version.

Speaking during a demonstration of the game, Producer Josh Austin commented, “So, yeah, this is the PS3 version, umm… it looks just as good as the 360 version, which we’re very happy about.”

“Towards the end we started having some serious conversations about what we were gonna do, uh, but we ended up pulling it off, so we’re very proud of that”, he explained.

When asked to clarify these comments by an attendee of Ripten.com, Austin stated, “It was just not running as well as the 360.”

Fortunately though, as detailed above, development of the PS3 version has since progressed smoothly, and will launch alongside its Xbox 360 counterpart next month.

Stay tuned for more coverage on the game here at PSU in the near future.

This is not news.  It would be news if it caused a delay or something.  But reporting that they overcame a problem they were having is not news.

They should ask for consulting from Infinity Wards, Naughty Dog, Insomniac or any other successful game developers available on the street. Or may be Digital Extremes should consider to ask them to developed his software’s. Look like they are not that extremes.

How about they start talking about how hard it is to develop for the Xbox? Seriously.. they never talk about that. He!! i'd be willing to bet they encounted their fair share of the problems during its first year too.. but we never hear about that now do we? This is getting old.

This was the first PS3 game they done, so it isnt strange that they had a hard time! The PS3 is great and powerful and the only problem for firste time programers is to understand how to use it. So dont take this as bad. The game works as good on PS3 as on the 360, so obviously they figured it out.

Problem here is very easy really to understand thing is 360 works just like pc with old technology its easy to make a game that works fine with it because every dev knows how to make a game on a PC and its nearly same on 360 but on other hand here is ps3 which is far more advanced technology that doesn’t work well on standard old stile the way they are used to make games so they need to learn how to work with something new and in process of learning everyone is bound to make mistakes so that was the problem with it. And not all devs are so good that they can make a game with new technology on first try.
Then you see that davs complain about how ps3 is hard to work with or something else that sort in reality they are too lazy to work and prefer to go easy way with old technology or they are just not that good programmers as they want to be that’s all to it.

Don't think developer's are "lazy" because they have problems with porting to the PS3.  That is just ignorant.  Many studios didn't have the PS3 development reasources they needed 2 years ago so they made their game first for the XBOX 360 then had to play catch up on the PS3.

"It was just not running as well as the 360," he added.

Usually this'd be the bit where we rant on about how PS3 multi-platform problems should've been ironed out by now. But we've got the Sony version of Dark Sector right in front of us and it runs lovely, like. So there you are.

Hard to say if this title HAD PS3 version problems or still HAS issues? If it HAD problems that are now resolved what is the point of the article with the exception that thie developer is still struggeling with PS3 development??

I'm not surprised one bit. Dark Sector was a game that I was actually looking forward to a little bit but now I'm about ready to drop this game from my list of games for 2008. I'm not going to spend $60 on a second-rate game, I only spend my money on the best of the best.

In my personal opinion, Digital Extremes needs to push the game back a few months so that they can perfect the PS3 version.

Oh well, I'll just read the reviews on this game and see how it is, but I'm thinking that this game will get pretty average ratings (7.0 - 7.5)

what the he!! is wrong with you people.  The dev just said it looks just as good as the 360 version, and that he is happy about that.  Why are you guys so mad at him and saying you are dropping this game?  He figured it out.  Good for them.

Everyone just needs to shut up about the freakin Home beta.  There are plenty of people who want to know about it and PSU will bring it to us.  B!tching about it won't bring it any faster.

---

As for the article...

Now I'm worried.  Just because it looks the same doesn't mean it will run the same.  BlackSite was supposed to looks the same and we got the shaft.  And why would devs want to can something they already worked hard on?  Seems like a better investment to fix it, which they did, and I'm glad.

This looks like an awesome mix between gears and re4. Digital Extremes used to make a lot of map packs for the ut games. They are very familiar with the Unreal Engine. Id go out on a limb and say, other than Epic themselves, no other developer knows the Unreal Engine like Digital Extremes. Expect this game to rival Gears.

when will developers learn to use the ps3 as lead platform? those who have done this get fine results. i don't think i've heard of one that hasn't gotten good results with ps3 lead. good thing that EA switched to ps3 lead on dead space, very good.

I really want this game, but I don't want it if it's going to be a shabby port that's inferior to the 360 version. !
