EA abandons downloadable weapons for Bad Company

Posted on April 9th, 2008 at 21:47 EDT

EA has abandoned its strategy to nickel and dime the owners of the upcoming Battlefield: Bad Company. Initially, they were prepared to charge consumers for five new weapons which would become available in the game's online multiplayer.

After a storm of fury and controversy spread throughout every corner of the internet, EA has decided to revoke their previous strategy. Karl-Magnus Troedsson, senior producer on Battlefield: Bad Company, set the issue straight.

"We had some weapons that we were planning to release through various marketing programs, but they were actually flagged there like you were supposed to buy these weapons through Xbox Live Marketplace, and that was a misunderstanding between marketing and us the developers," said Troedsson. "We clarified that in the last statement that went out, but lately there's been a lot going on about the Gold Edition weapons.

"When we saw this big uprise about people that really felt it was dissatisfying that some people bought the Gold Edition, those five weapons you couldn't get or that you had to buy if you had the ordinary version of the game, that we just decided that all weapons will be free in the game, and that's how it is now.

"These Gold Edition weapons, we won't give away, you have to do something as a gamer. The Gold Edition guys and girls that actually buy that game will have some time where the weapons are exclusive, because if you don't buy the Gold Edition, you have to earn them."

At least DICE and EA aren't so arrogant that they'll blatantly ignore the vast amount of negative feedback they've received over the last couple of days. Prepare to battle with Bad Company on June 23.

What a shame they were even thinking of this. It shows you even more how EA tries to get every last penny out of us....kind of like the government. Hmmmmm.....maybe they work together.....

At least some developers within EA are listening to what the gamers want. Still not sure if I should but this game though but everyone having the same weapons should be standard.

The government is not like EA, they take money to support the nation and such. They need to raise taxes because it is screwing us over, now EA was right to kill off this idea for weapons to cost. If they want to sell maps, that is a little bit reasonable.

EA is an evil corporation that is buying up all of the indepedent developers in order to corner the videogame market for themselves when they release their own console in 2012.

At least that's what I've heard.

EA must of looked at this and relized that what money they make off this DLC wouldn't be enough to offset the money they'd lose from people not buying the game lol.

So is he saying that you can buy it or earn it now instead of just buying it. Still sounds like bull to me. I bet for at least one of the weapons, it will be extremely hard to get, just so you still have to buy it to get them all.

this strikes me as what the plan was all along...lets face it, it's not easy to advertise a game in todays market...a lot of great games get shoved to the side by bigger (not always better) releases.

So...release a statement saying that people will have to pay for certain weapons to use in game and then "decide" a week or so later to change that...well that makes me think the whole thing was an advertising ploy.  Considering that this game looks like another run of the mill shooter i dont' see me buying it anyways...

EA is just a money machine.

All they have to do is take the weapons that they were going to make downloadable weapons and just turn them into secret unlockable weapons that you can get when you beat the campaign mode or something. There's no need to nickel and dime people over some stupid unlockable weapons. EA already has plenty of money (Billions) so why are they trying to rip off more people than they already have with their lazy game development? The weapons should be free and they shouldn't have never thought about making downloadable weapons that you have to pay for.

EA the bottom line company. First they will skimp on production and then try to maximize their profits by nickle and diming people.=== EA Sports, it's in their wallet. ===

ether way i would have bought the game, it looks fun and enjoyable, i might have even bought  the weapons, and its not like they force you to buy them, i just dont see what was the big deal, if u didnt want to pay for weapons than you didnt have to, that shouldnt stop u from enjoying a game...

They have not learned their lesson yet.  Have you guys already forgotten about having to buy weapon upgrades for Army of Two?  Boycott this horrible company.  Shame on you if you still even THINK about buying EA.  The whole point of boycotting is "going without".  It's a SACRIFICE on your part to get your ultimate point across.  For those of you still boycotting EA, good job.

@Xdeth

!

I give up.  From now on, if I ever see anyone on any message board complaining about an EA game they bought, I will only remind them that they were stupid for buying it in the first place.  Funny, people will complain about excessive downloads from EA, but apparently, they have $60 to throw away in the first place.  Can I get you guys to at least RENT the garbage first?  That sends the same message.
