Eidos talks Tomb Raider Underworld and release window

Posted on March 1st, 2008 at 17:52 EDT

As you may have heard, Eidos hasn’t been having too swell of a time in the financial department surrounding their studios. If you remember, Eidos cut 14 on-going projects in order to get costs under control and to better push the company in the right direction. Phil Rogers, CEO of Eidos, hopes this restructuring will have a huge impact on the way the company has been diving.

"SCi is in need of immediate change," said SCi CEO Phil Rogers. "Following our business review over the last six weeks, we are initiating a clear action plan based on three fundamental strands of activity: a radical change in our structure to a studio-led business, a top to bottom program of product improvement and efficiency and a considerable cost reduction plan. The cost of delivering world-class games has increased significantly and we must provide appropriate levels of resources to maximize these opportunities. At the same time our industry is well positioned for business and margin expansion through a broadening demographic appeal of games centered around online initiatives.”

It’s no secret that the Tomb Raider franchise is Eidos most valuable entity and this would only prove for it to be one of the most important issues to address in regards to what direction Eidos plans on taking.

"Our cornerstone franchises, such as Tomb Raider that has already sold 35 million units, have the potential to deliver significant profits and substantial returns on investment, which should not be diluted by more run-of-the-mill games. We must optimize our return on these titles, leverage and position the Group for online and make better use of our innovative strength."

Because of this, Tomb Raider Underworld and three other titles have been pushed to the fourth quarter of this fiscal year. Eidos has confirmed though that Tomb Raider Underworld will be releasing in time for the Christmas season.

"The most significant of these titles is the next Tomb Raider game, Tomb Raider: Underworld, which is now scheduled to launch during the 2008 Christmas season. "

As more concrete details are released in regards to this title, we’ll be bringing it to you as fast as we can. We’re all excited for Lara Croft’s next arrival on the PlayStation brand.

Well, I've only played Demos of the Tomb Raider games. If Tomb Raider had gameplay exactly like Uncharted, maybe I would consider it, but the old Tomb Raider games for the Playstation just didn't "feel right" in terms of controls.

I think that Eidos is just developing another Tomb Raider game just because they "think" that it will sell. I would have preferred if Eidos just started from scratch and created another brand new game franchise because then at least they would be bringing some originality to the table, but I guess they don't have the money and time to do it.

I would like to see Eidos bring back the Gex series. All Eidos has to do is make a Gex game with weapons and vechicles or something similar to Jak 2 and/or Jak 3. I've been wanting more developers to make games similar to the Jak and Daxter series and put there own twist to it.

Ahhhh Tomb Raider, fond memories. Classic PS1 games, at least the first 2 were. This needs a major overhaul to compete these day's what with Uncharted raising the bar for action/adventures. I would love too see a return to form, I have not bought a TR game for a long time it would be welcome.

Sony needs to pick this studio up.  The only one I ever played was the original on PS1 and it was great.

I've enjoyed every single TR game - even Angel of Darkness. If you haven't played them, you're missing out.

Personally, I can't wait for Underworld. Granted they need to tweak it since Uncharted, because that title out-Tomb Raidered Tomb Raider!
