Konami has revealed that the English release of its PlayStation 3-exclusive title Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots will be noticeably more difficult than its Japanese counterpart.
Speaking during an interview at the inaugural E for All expo last weekend, Assistant Producer Ryan Payton explained that Japanese gamers are more reluctant to explore the uses of the games 3D camera; an aspect that he observes is more popular among western consumers.
“It's going to be harder than the Japanese version, I can say that right now. That over the shoulder view is going to be, I hope, the focal point!” said Payton. “I want to make that the default setting, and then people can turn on auto-aim later if they want to. I think that auto-aim takes away from the intimacy of the battle.”
“The reason we put that in there was because at TGS I noticed that when Japanese gamers would play, they would pick up the PS3 controller, and their right thumb would never go even go close to the right stick”, he continued.
“They would never manipulate the camera. It's still something that they need to learn about this full 3D camera system. Games like Onimusha and Resident Evil have always kind of held their hands through games with fixed cameras and things like that.”
Metal Gear Solid 4 is scheduled for simultaneous worldwide release in Q1 2008.

I guess I can understand how two different cultures can have different preferences of play styles. I do think having auot aim is an asset for those new to the MGS series but also addresses that veteran MGS players need not such a function.
Patience is such a killer in this waiting game! 8E
I guess if its like the psp version then you still have advantages over autoaim if you can do quickmanual aim = headshot vs bodyshots usually win if your fast enough.
I like how they are tailoring the game to two different cultures.
Nice thinking Ryan Payton. I so want this game! :)
I read the full interview ... Ryan Payton CONFIRMED that the game is PS3 EXCLUSIVE ... No 360 version coming .
buffon - Of course its ps3 exclusive, only way it would hit the xbox360 if microsoft added the so called internal hd-dvd drive but they still would rather keep it for sony exclusive due to their success with the playstation platform.
It's kinda interesting that certain gaming cultures perfer certain in-game controls. I would go nuts if they didn't have controlled camera angles.
well i am up for the challenge. bring it on mgs4
psn id: gingo... 3d cameras are great and once japanease learn to use these they will wish they had used them much before now
harder, thats great, just means that i can really get down and dirty with this game.
I like free roam cameras, but on a game like this, you almost have to have one.
I'll say though that God of War had a great fixed camera system.
I always thought they upped the difficulty level for all english versions of Japanese games.
I can't wait for this game.
haha japanese cant handle the intense action like americans can!!! they love Onimusha and Resident Evil, where we love CoD4, halo, gears of war, crysis, etc, etc.
Ka1ser, you obviously play nothing but FPS. You sound like such an xbot.
