In an interview with Tetsuya Nomura, new details were released on Square Enix's upcoming titles Final Fantasy XIII and Versus XIII.
Noruma stated that with the help of the Blu-Ray and the HDD provided in every PS3, the quality jump from Final Fantasy XII to XIII should rival the jump seen in Final Fantasy VI to VII.
Also, Noruma went on to say that once again Final Fantasy XIII and Versus XIII will be PlayStation 3 exclusives. This meaning that even though the White Engine is now multiplatform, gamers will not see these two titles going anywhere but the Sony PS3. Why you might ask? Well according to Noruma, Square Enix is using the PS3 to its full specifications, meaning that in order to perform the same game on PC or Xbox 360 would require a full reworking of the code and to run on the Xbox 360 would require probably a highly chopped down version or multiple disc version of the game.
Anyways, all in all, if you are looking for a game that makes the most out of your PS3, plan on picking Final Fantasy XIII up sometime late 2008 or even 2009. Until then, stay tuned for more information.

Final Fantasy Versus XIII Extended Cloud Trailer
Are you kidding? Not only would they have to dumb the game down for Blu ray, but also for the Cell processor. No way in **** can the 360's processor run anything that is using the full specs for the PS3. Face it: Uncharted: Drake's fortune is using 30% of the cell processor, and IGN or some other game site said that it was the best looking console game on the market. That's just sad.
That's effing right... By the time FFXIII comes out, PS3 graphics will be sooo far away from what the 360 has, and FFXIII will finally be the game to blow the 360 so far away, people will be purposely RRODing their consoles.
lol @ 2
yea ff13 will be czry one of my anticapted tittles for next year boy will next year be a handful not only for sony but MS they going to have to put up with the as$ wooping for a whole year AT LEAST or TWO.
Oh h**l yes I'm pumped, btw LMAO you cant say H**L on here??
this is good news for sony hopefully Square Enix will stay with sony and make all the other final fantasy games only on the ps3 :) anyhow for me The best rpg game i have ever played or the best in making rpgs are Square Enix and the best one they ever made has been final fantasy i hope many think the same as me even blue dragon is not the same as final fantasy ^_^ as for the using the processor of the ps3 hopefully this will be very useful in other projects aswell in this game as for uncharted drake im still like woow this is a game the acting everything is so good.
When I hear stuff like this, I'm proud to own a PS3. I can't wait for both of these games. Reminiscent of the jump from FFVI to FFVII? That will be awesome!
If it does start to utilize the full potential of the PS3, more development companies are gonna need to get their hands on that white engine.
Awesome, and anyone doubting a developer needs to step back and ask if they know how these things work. Just because it uses the white engine doesn't mean its easy to port when the game itself will take advantage of the PS3 which is more powerful then the 360.
@ tom:
I recall reading that the PS3 Final Fantasys do use the 'White Engine' but they are using a modified version of it that takes advantage of the PS3's SPUs. I'm guessing Nomura wanted to go all the way with the modifications with the engine for the XIII series and decided to modify it to make use of all the PS3's hardware (Cell, RSX, HDD, Blu-Ray, etc.)
late 2008/9
thats a loong wait..BUT ITS WROTH IT ROAR >=0
@ D3v1l
You're right, they aren't using the full specs... YET
FFXIII and FFvsXIII are nowhere near done. Not even 20% done. They are taking a very, very long time to finish these games. I don't think many other games have gone 1-year into production, with working hardware, and only made 13 - 15% progress. By the time they are done I think we can realistically expect them to be using most of the PS3's specs to their full potential.
The engine might be multi-platform but there is always other things to consider other than the engine. I mean if all it was engine than many windows games would inside linux etc etc.
Good show to square keeping these puppies on the PS. Its just one of things when you think FF you think PS and I think both FF and PS have seen great gains because of this relationship.
rewritting would take some time to port it to the 360. PLus by Tetsuya statement it clearly shows that the 360 is obsolete to the PS3. Im not a fanboy but he's saying their would have to be a lot of re writing and configuring plus the change of the codecs to make the game suffice with a PS3 version even then it still probably wouldn't be enough. MS really need to change their disc format because DVD9 is starting to look like it's not enough for what these gaming industries are trying to accomplish to have that true next gen. feel. Because i surely wouldn't want to have to play a game and keep changing disc everytime.
I can't wait to see how this game turns out and how much it pushs out of the PS3.
Finally a game company that knows how to program for the PS3, EA should take some lessons from these cats for sure.
We all know that Square Enix knows how to push the envelope on all the Playstations they have developed for. If any one is going to utilize the full Power of the PS3 it’s going to be Square Enix without a doubt. These guys have always delivered on there word. If they say it's going to be a huge jump like FFVI to FFVII it's going to be just that.
Of course Square Enix would have to undersize the game to port to the 360. The PS3 is a much more sophisticated machine and there for harder to program. But that's just not going to happen. That would be like Leonardo Devinci reworking the Mona Lisa with Crayola crayons. It's just not going to happen.
oh by the way i highly doubt that the PS3 is going to be used to it's full potential by the time of the release. I say about 60-65%. If square-enix can utilize the full potential then that says a lot towards Square and proof the they are trully top notch in the gaming industry.
As far as I remember, when FFVII came out it was THE best looking game I've played on PSOne. I believe that it was made to full spec on the console and I believe Square have the capabilities of actually producing what they said they want to. So, I say believe in them...they won't waste all these years+ just to disappoint us and themselves!
I doubt that the game will take full advantage of the ps3's hardware, but we can be sue that it will take more advantage of the cell, then any other game. Also I hope that after this game is released that Square Enix shares there knowledge with other developers so more games can push the ps3's hardware to the limit.
I think by "full" the mean using all of the ps3's spus, along with the cell&rsx. Just everything in the ps3 that can render or simulate anything. Either that or theyre talking process power to the fullest. In which case this game is going to make any game on any console look $hitty.
glad to hear that!!! that sounds great, it will take a while though haha...
I don't think these games will use the full potential of Cell or RSX. But it looks really nice, and I also think that by that time PS3 will have surpassed Xbox 360 very much.
I'm pretty sure 360 owners don't mind the 50 disc collectors set!!!
LOL @ Merc recon... so true :p
The ffs games has always been awesome :p these doesent seem like an exeption :)
Nice stuff. Like #14 said, the FF series is a series that is synonomous with the Playstation brand, so it being exclusive is almost a given. At the same time though, although it'd be bad for Sony, it'd kinda be better for the gaming market in general if everyone got to enjoy this game, because it is going to absolutely rock. Personally I don't mind though, because I own a PS3, so it doesn't affect me in the slightest if it never went to Xbox, because I'll still get to play it.
But yeah. The Sony supporter within me says it's awesome that only we'll get to play it. But at the same time, the overall 'gamer' within me says it's a shame for the people who only have a 360. I do genuinely feel sorry for the ones who won't buy a PS3, because this game is going to blow everything around it, out of the water.
Oh well, nothing I can do about it I guess. I'll still be getting to enjoy the game :P
major fan of final fantasy and kingdom hearts. will definately be getting these games. btw of course square-enix are gonna push the playstation, its what they alwasys do. compare ffvii, ffviii to what was on the ps at da time n den ffx to what was on the ps2 at the time. they always surpass anything else on the market :P
THOUGHT---->Why is it that it's taking game developers a while to take full advantage of the PS3's potential?!
psn id: gingo... very much looking forward to one of these if not them both should be the benchmark for rpgs on the ps3 if they do them well
Man,i wish they would stop teasing us and give us the release date already, the wait is killing me.
Im pumped, I can't wait to see the 360 burn! This is the game that will make all the 360's blow up instead of just one every 3 months! =)
i doubt its fully using its power this early but who knows with FF
