Ubisoft Montreal, developer of the forthcoming sequel Far Cry 2, has admitted that the company previously held concerns over the reputed complexity’s involved in working with Sony’s PlayStation 3, but stated it is highly impressed by the system's "raw" processing power.
Speaking to PSM3 Magazine, Tech Director Dominic Guay commented, "We were somewhat worried by some of the reported high complexity of developing for the PS3,” adding, "but the raw processing power is impressive".
Guay revealed how the team, over time, has become more acquainted in developing for the PS3, as he recalls, "We made sure we had a group of programmers that were not scared by complexity and had a large console programming experience to work on the initial PS3 R&D of Dunia (Far Cry 2's graphics engine). At that point, we didn't know what to expect."
“One thing that we realized pretty quickly as we started R&D on PS3 was that the hardware architecture had a very nice fit with some of our technical design decisions.”
“We were positively surprised by how efficient the SPUs (the Cell processing units) were to do such things as run our vegetation simulation, our animations or our physics systems. So while it did require quite a bit of R&D to understand how to use the system correctly, once we started having results we saw that it was a very capable console and that FC2 could run on it."
Elsewhere, Guay also touched on how the PS3’s Blu-ray drive and hard drive have facilitated the company’s efforts in terms of its ability to stream games in real-time, adding, “The hard drive and Blu-ray are making our life easy considering FC2 is an open world continuously streamed around the player.”
“That streaming bandwidth and disk space is very appreciated. So, in terms of AI, game structure, physics, dynamic time of day, open world gameplay, dynamic weather system, destructible vegetation, all of those things where we had really pushed the envelope technically, they run well on PS3."

very good news, just hope the game lives up on ps3 :P
good to hear. glad to know some devs arent throwing their poo like monkeys
One thing I do not understand, admitting all that power PS3 posses, bluray, HDD and cell processor, I still can't see the difference between PS3 and Xbox 360 games!? When will developers take full advantage of all its powers so that we could actually see the difference in multiplatform games??? I want to see multiplatform games that really shine on my shiny PS3!!!
psn id: gingo... this is becoming more clear that if a company has programmers willing to take the time and understand the architecture then its not as complex as people say but as most companys have lazy programmers this is a problem for most developers
I cant wait for this to arrive, check out youtube for some in game footage, it rocks!
Awsome, the ps3 version should turn out very nicely then. I like the monkey joke
that's great! The only thing missing is a comparison of other consoles? Really what I want to hear is "this game can only be done on the PS3". Anything less like "it works good on the PS3" and so on, doesn't justify anything IMO. Of course it can be done on Sony's console. Otherwise they wouldn't have made it. I agree that I want to see better mulitplat games on the PS3. Not equal, better.
Old news, we have all known from day one that the PS3 is extremely capable. Its amazing what you can do when you put a bit of effort in. EA take note and learn
This sounds great! hopefully the development goes smot and easy. Is Far Cry 2 for PC, PS3 and 360 or just PC,PS3?
wow great news i hope to play this game soon
@m29cool
Ports aren't supposed to look that different. They don't want to alienate a specific fanbase and they don't want added work. Looking for differences in ports between comparable systems are futile. It is the exclusives that do the talking.
I love how all of these conflicting statements and love/hate stories that fly around make these publishers look stupid. EA, Ubisoft, Activision, etc. etc. All of them have devs that hate PS3 or their games come out crappy on PS3, then they have other devs that put PS3 as lead platform and love the thing, and the games turned out great. They all need to get their act together and realize that they are going to get better games and better profit if they put PS3 first and deal with the slight initial inconvenience of developing for it.
@ m29cool
First the PS3 is still young and most developers still strugle with it's architecture making it harder for them to develop games on.
Secondly, why would they put extra effort into making the game better for the PS3? It will only upset 360 owners because they would get a "crappier" version of the game and at the moment the PS3 installbase is smaller than of the 360 so it's just not worth it.
Hopefully the PS3 will sell a bunch of SKU's this year so we get ahead of the 360 sales and make sure the PS3 will become the lead development platform for multiplatform games.
Once the programmers master the ps3 it might even surpass the Xbox 360. After all how far can you go with dvds? Blu ray is the new winner format.
sweet i hope it will be the best on ps3 version or onley on ps3 lol .....
wow now that is nice to hear from a developer, who has not worked on the ps3.
Good news from ubisoft developers not like the lazy EA
"yup we're impressed with PS3's "raw" power and capabilites but we cannot/and must not use them for the sake of the 360 version along with all of it's fans"....sad but true, our hope only lies in our exclusives, remember uncharted when it was hailed as having the best graphics to come out for consoles in that time
Well if ubisoft are really taking the time to get to grips with the ps3 then surely the game is going to be awesome and run extremely well, lets jus hope they dont "F" it up.
I think its been said that the 360 cannot run the dunia as well as the devs want for the game.
This game actually rocks. Check out the youtube and gametrailers videos
From what I take, he is saying that the PS3 and PC are the only platforms it will run on.He is saying that he needs media space and a HDD, both of which the 360 dont posess. So from that standpoint alone, I think the PS3 is sitting pretty.
if its so good then bring conviction!
Crysis and now Far Cry? The 360 isn't having very good luck with their "better" console.
I want to see that power at work. Until now I haven't seen nothing the XBox won't do.
aww man. this is SUCH good news. im starting to see alot of positive articles like this lately. the ps3 is def having a major turnaround this year :-)
Wow. I've just seen some videos about this game and... wow. wow. Fantastic. There's a video that shows the weather changing from a sunny day to a storm, and... wow. Impressive. Games are reaching to a level of awsomness that makes me happy for owning a console...
good job retards =]
Devs in the back, show them were its at. Devs in the front let me hear you grunt*!
Translation: Game Dev who have found out that the ps3 is the most powerfull game system out there should tell the other devs to R&B and join the ps3 Comunity!
Well nice to hear this, yet EA still complains, while Ubisoft (a really big company) doesn't???
Well, well, it seems more and more devs are looking past the different and "complex" coding of the PS3 with it's Cell and other features to realise it's a f'n beast inside.
I think it's cool that devs are finding the PS3's features useful but i don't understand how stuff like the Blu-Ray Drive and HDD are so beneficial if the game is being released at most likely the same quality with the same features on platforms that lack such features.
Unless of course the game isn't so 'equal' on other platforms and the PS3 sees some exclusive features such as extra pre-loaded content, installation, user-content support, and maybe graphical superiority or performance thanks to the cell.
I really want to see this do well on PS3!
Well it does have raw power, it always depends on a dev's determination to achieve what they want with that architecture.
amazed to see develepors not complaining anymore and just doing the dam// thing.
thats good to hear lets just hope it doesn't get delayed like most games that we have come across, we'll see if they really have a grasp of the architect of the PS3, proof is in the pudding
@staticneuron and lividrecca
the xbox had an extremely small install base when compared to PS2 yet multiplatform games on the xbox looked much better than the PS2 versions. Exclusive PS2 games like GOW and FFXII showed that PS2 can match xbox but it was never the same for multiplatform. If develepors could put the extra effort in making the xbox games look and run better then the same can be done for PS3 versions of multiplatform games. And I believe in the near future that PS3 will become the lead platform for development and PS3 will have better looking multiplatform games. They have to because developers can't afford to fall behind the exclusive titles. When Killzone 2 comes out and sets the benchmark, more exclusive games will look like this and then later on, will look even better. So multiplatform games will have to match this and if it can't be done on 360, this is where PS3 verions of multiplatform games will become superior.
Hey Ubisoft,
Will you guys please leave the 360 in the dust and optimize the PS3 and PC versions. Come on... PLEASE!!!!
Raw power!
Why is my PS3 wandering around congress pleading innocence about taking performance enhancers?
Sounds good, although, including the first Far Cry game on the same disc as 2 would be even better.
Not bad, but considering that he said COuld RUN! It makes me doubt that PS3 will have 10 years span. this Raw power may be good for 1 or 2 more years till PC will take over
never played far cry but if far cry 2 is good on ps3 and worth buying i think i'll pick it up, even though with haze and killzone 2 coming out the competition is going to be tight and not everybody want's to have 20 fps games for thier consoles but just want's to gat the best one on the market (thiers ut3 but i put this one in a different category seeing it's mainly it's online feature which is going to promote it)
All the other articals Ive read on this story say a bit more than this one... Yes they are polite about PS3...but they also say it will lack the quality textures, resolution & graphic effects of the PC version because of the limited memory in PS3.
Isn't this also being developed for the 360?So then how is ps3 soooooooo much more powerful,if the 360 can handle it just fine WITHOUT an hdd.
