Take a look at Mirror's Edge's upcoming demoIt's that time of month again. No, companies aren't chucking bills at you; it's NPD time! Without further adieu, the US hardware sales for the month of February are as follows:
Nintendo DS: 587.6K
Wii: 432.0K
PlayStation 2: 351.8K
PlayStation 3: 280.8K
PlayStation Portable: 243.1K
Xbox 360: 254.6K
Nintendo's dominance continues; they control the top spot in both the handheld and console markets. However, Sony's numbers remained strong throughout the month. The PSP once again proved that it and the DS can successfully coexist. Additionally, the PS3 managed to outsell the Xbox 360 by a decent margin, though 360 software remained stronger due to the larger install base. Most surprisingly, the PS2 was not only present on the charts, but a massive seller, beating out both Microsoft and Sony's current generation consoles.
While Microsoft declared the month a "hollow victory" for Sony, PR babble aside, Sony is surely proud of their now-steady hardware performance. With the plethora of exclusives and the launch of Home looming on the horizon, we can't wait to see what Sony has in store for the rest of the year.

first!! ps3 is taking over as soon as it passes the wii that is, but at least it is beating the 360, but you know the 360 is having shortages that is why it isnt selling well. bull$hit
Good to see the PS2 is selling so well yet compared to the other systems! Awesome to see the PS3 is beating the 360 right now. Bright future for the PS3 ahead!
i just hope that we beat out nintendo soon i stiil dont understand why they sell so much i played the wii and it is crap even mario galaxy
HA! woo! YEah. :D
ohhh nooo! Quick! Someone come up with PR defense!
ha. Playstation 2 is selling more than Xbox 360 STILL. Its just a matter of time ps3 catches up with ps2 sells and massively outsell Xbox 360!
i don't even factor in the Wii. its sales are based off completely different audiance. so who cares? its not like due to its popularity all the GOOD games that aren't mario that we have will switch to Wii or anything.
To be honest I wouldn't mind the PS3 beating all the others, but if its not then I don't really care as long as we get these tight games that are comming up soon.
Just wait till the PS3 drops price again (which I bet will happen sometime this year) because when the XBOX drops price, so must SONY. Think on the good side...if we didn't have XBOX 360 we wouldn't have the PS3 as cheap as it is now.
As long as the PS2 continues to sell strong, Sony has some leverage on the way that the handle the pricing and scheduling of all things PS3.
The Wii will continue to have strong strong sales for quite sometime. As long as there are games out there and the ps3 is priced higher it will continue to sell. The reason it seems like crap to you is because you are playing on a ps3 that has state of the art graphics and effects. The people buying Wiis are those that don't care about graphics and games with partical effects and so on. The are budget minded families that are trying to satisfy junior and don't own or plan to own a hd tv for some time. Sony is fine and will remain fine. If you combine ps2 and ps3 they outsell the Wii. They have the low end margins and the upper end. True they would rather grow the upper end margins but look at the psp. Financially it is still very much a success even though it will never reach ds levels. Doesn't mean it is an inferior product or an unprofitable one. PS3 will be similar I think this generation. May not win the console war in pure numbers but still could sell 100 million and still be a huge success in Sony's eyes and pockets. Microsoft is the one in trouble. The more systems they sell the more they lose not just because they haven't turned a profit on their consoles but because the more they make the more they inevitably have to fix. If they cared about turning a profit they would actually stop making the console....but their goals are much larger and clearly don't define success by profits but rather market share. PS3 will steadily sell but people have it all wrong I think on when the true big rush of PS3's will sell. We will see big sales with 2008 but actually the Christmas of 2009 it will explode exponentially. Why? The console should hit the 299 mark by then and also you will see MGS, KILLZONE 2, GT, LBP, GOW, GTA, and FF all get released on Greatest Hits at a discounted price (baring major delays). Think about it. 299 PS3 and all those system sellers on greatest hit discount for xmas 09. You will see Sony sell possibly 12 million units that christmas alone and continue to sell appoximately a million a month thereafter. That is where Sony is trying to get to.
Wow davin, any sources to backup that dissertation of yours?
lol whys the xobx 360 below the psp?
I don't know about you guys, but I still can't believe how much the PS2 is selling... it's just unbelievable. Even after the PS2 has been out almost 8 years it's still going strong... and the Wii sold nearly a half a million consoles, there's just no stopping the Wii, it's having it's own race with itself.
But, the PS3 did it again! However, the PS3 just barely outsold the Xbox 360. I want to see the PS3 outsell the Xbox 360 by at least 100,000 consoles in the coming months... that will probably happen in June no doubt. Sony is still doing good with all of their consoles, and the PS2 just keeps surprising me. At this rate, I could see the PS2 around for another 2 years possibly. And just think... the PS3's biggest games haven't even came out yet... ha ha, the PS3 is just getting started.
Davin - I like how you think buddy.
I'm amazed at how much the Wii has sold. But wow the PS2 is selling like crazy too. When it gets dropped to $99 it will probably be closer to the Wii then the PS3.
A PMS joke would have gone better with that first line. Opportunity missed...
---
Any month Microsoft can sell more consoles than replace is a victory for them.
The ps3 has hot titles sure to dominate sales in feb, march, april, may... the whole 2008... 2009... etc. 360 has ZERO for 2008 and B3yond.
Nintendo's lead is a hollow one. their hardware sells based on hype right now. No body is actuallybuying the games and that's the important thing. If people were actually buying games for it thei prices wouldnt keep dropping to 25 bucks a month after they're released! The games are clogging the retail chain and stores are being forced to discount them ridiculously in order to get people to buy them. so really the wii's numbers are a moot point. The real battle is between the two systesm that people actually buy games for.
This year on PS3 = MGS4, LBP, KZ2, MS2 Next year = FF13,vs13/GoW3
This Year on X360 = NG2, GeoW2, Fable2, ToV Next year = Alan Wake, Banjo 3
hope sony lower price soon.
This just proves how good the PS2 was and still is after all these years. I imagine the PS3 will do the same!
nintendo is not exactly against ps3 or xbox...... but ps3 beat xbox :D but ps2 beats ps3 ????????? ALOT of cheap peeps out there
BOOYA, PS2 outsells crashbox. This just made my day. (not really) Davin, great logic. Inferno, a PMS joke is exactly what I was thinking as well.
Sony really is an amazing company. Everyone doubts them, but they just continue to amaze us, all of the sony systems are selling well.
psn id: gingo... it seems nintendo have the right idea for what people wanted in a console this year but for the actual real consoles its good to see the playstation brand still doing strong
everyone says its a battle between the 360 and the ps3 and dont really include the wii. Look at those nintendo numbers tho! our next gen consoles wont b able to catch them up. Nintendo have tapped into the perfect market and are doing very well for themselves but i have no interest in their console wotsoever. Has anyone worked out if the ps3 can even catch up the 360 at these rates and how long it will take? 30k more this month and we havnt had any good games come out, when metal gear gets here those numbers are gonna rocket :D
@ soviet messiah. Y should he need a source? this is the comment space for expressing your opinion and hes speaking his mind. You havnt even commented on the article so fcuk off
We just reported NPD's video game hardware and software sales report for the month of February, 2008. With the Xbox 360 selling less units than the Wii and the PlayStation 3, Microsoft has provided some comments on the NPD data.
For February’s NPD reporting period, Xbox 360 remained in a supply constrained situation. The situation is improving and we are confident consumers will soon be able to find the Xbox 360 SKU they seek, in time for the launch of “Grand Theft Auto IV”, which we expect to be one of the biggest titles of the year with huge impact on the Xbox 360 platform.
What makes a winning platform? It’s more than console sales. It’s about consoles + content + community.
We’d provide you with what we believe is a complete picture of a healthy console ecosystem, and how Xbox 360 is contributing:
Consoles:
$332 million was spent on the Xbox 360 platform this month, capturing 39 percent of the generation’s ecosystem, $235 million was spent on the PS3 and $283 million was spent on the Wii. (February NPD data)
The Xbox 360 platform now has a U.S. installed base of 9.6 million; the PS3 has 3.8 million, the Wii has 8.1 million. (February NPD data)
February NPD data shows a new Xbox 360 software attach rate of 7.2, nearly twice that of the PS3 or the Wii. (February NPD data)
255,000 Xbox 360 consoles were sold during the month of February. (February NPD data)
Content:
Xbox 360 leads in games, with six out of the top 10 best selling console games in February. (February NPD data)
Xbox 360 “Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare” (Activision) was the best-selling console game across all platforms, outselling the PlayStation 3 version by 2:1. (February NPD data)
Xbox 360 has the top selling games on its platform. According to February NPD, Xbox 360 sold $184 million in games, with PS3 selling $97 million and Wii $130 million.
Third party partners find more success on Xbox 360. In February, Xbox 360 accounted for $159 million of all third party game sales this generation, or 45 percent of share. (February NPD data)
Xbox 360 has more games available than any other platform, and more than twice the games available on PS3. (February NPD data)
Community:
Xbox LIVE is the largest online gaming community currently over 10 million strong worldwide, and growing. The PS3 online network is only 2.9 million (U.S. data only) and the Wii has only four million (this number includes North America and Japan). (Microsoft internal estimates)
Xbox LIVE is opening doors to help turn its 10 million gamers into developers. Last month, Xbox 360 announced community games for Xbox LIVE and will be widely available this fall.
Today, we are announcing Xbox LIVE experienced 750,000 downloads of seven new community games on Xbox LIVE. They were made available for free, for less than a week. (Microsoft internal estimates)
When you look at lifetime performance of all three consoles, Xbox 360 continues to lead:
Lifetime Ecosystem Performance (US NPD Data):
To date, $9.0 billion have been spent on Xbox 360 in the U.S, which is more than the competition’s retail dollars combined. This is nearly $6 billion more than consumers have spent on PS3 and approximately $4.5 billion more than Wii.
Third party publishers make 60 percent of their revenue at retail on the Xbox 360 platform this generation.
Xbox 360: Extending the Lead
Xbox 360 has six of the top 10 best games, ranked by quality. (Metacritic)
No other game platform delivers downloadable digital entertainment, with family favorites like “Hannah Montana” and “Lost.”
No other platform delivers interactive online experiences to more than 10 million members around the globe.
lol...look i'm just a business man that enjoys gaming as a hobby and follow sony because i invest in them. look...i don't have sources or quotes or insider information. point is i base my information on past success, business models, and personally what i look at in my business and how i would be running sony. no....i don't run sony...but i do work for a very very successful business and have been doing so for 7 years now. (enough to be out of middle management) my opinions are just that...but based off of years of data on sony's business model and my personal feelings on where they are headed as an investor. i am definately not worried......well..much. there is uncertainty in all investing but that is why you diversify but sony is now long out of the uncertainty the ps3 had and now well on their way to the success they invisioned for it. They achieved goal #1 by using it to win the format war. Remember...Sony told you that they would sell 4 million consoles without a single game (reason being simply as a blu-ray player). Yet people complained and complained about price and no games. If they would simply listen to SONY they would know that Sony had no intentions on providing the most abundant game line-up at launch and were not focusing on gaming customers at all. So if you bought it at launch and were mad it had no games...well blame yourself for not believing what Sony was telling you. They didn't mis-lead anyone. With the new media war now won and AAA series about to be released basically monthly here on out we find Sony in a great position moving forward. They didn't totally lose dev support many feared and have even taken over console sales lead from Microsoft (again not talking about nintendo). Say what you like about Sony. But they are selling more consoles with basically no games. That has to kill microsoft. What it says is Microsoft is not expanding their gaming community past the original xbox community. If they have so many better games (which i agree their line-up is way better than sony's) why aren't new customers choosing the 360 over the ps3? Fact is as an investor the 360 is killing Microsoft. It does nothing but lose money for them and to be honest hasn't provided the lift they claim it would for the live community or expanded their core business. I sold my microsoft shares because i don't like where they are headed. When i saw the incompetance of marketing zune, vista disaster, and to continue pouring money into the xbox i just said these people have lost focus and have clearly done a poor job running this company. thus....i sold my stock. While nintendo and Sony are achieving their goals for this generation if anyone told you that microsoft is on target to achieve theirs i would say they are lying and to fire that advisor. Microsoft has a market for their xbox....and have achieved in selling their console to that market....in fact selling several to each person considering how many faulty consoles have been replaced. But unless they are able to tap into a much larger base by securing many more exclusives with many many more powerful developers and genres outside of fps and sports games they will not see mass market success and therefor never see profits from their gaming division.
Just for DEMOBOT.....not to be get personal but why do you quote microsofts global sales and numbers but not PS3's? You only compare NA numbers. You do realize NA will not determine the full outcome of success for either of these companies. Clearly Microsoft is dominating the US market but for companies like Sony and Microsoft that is like only looking at half the picture. This is a global business with huge global markets that Microsoft and yourself seem to have not bothered to focus on.
I'm sure the ps3 will beat the 360......but the wii.....i don't think so....even though there aren't any good games on the wii(only 4 games) people still buy it before its fun and it is ''fun''=for casual gamers and even people who doesn't even play videogames but 4 hardcore gamers there for me are only 4 good games(SMG, MPC,SSBB, and LZTP)
Since this gen's console wars have started I find that people consider the war to be only between the PS3 and 360, yet the Wii beats both since launch? Just an observation.
I really don't understand how a company can actually UNDERESTIMATE the demand for it's console, not that the 360s were exactly flying during the Holiday period. But still even if M$ was having shortages,it's their own fault, and quite frankly, very un-professional of them to have shortages after 3 FRIGGIN' YEARS.
Lol, M$ keeps saying they sell double as much than Sony...
Effing n00bs..
