GRID retail version better than demo

Posted on May 23rd, 2008 at 12:53 EDT

After the many debacles with the GRID demo, most notably the comparison videos, the full title is finally set to release in just under two weeks. With that release just around the bend, Executive Producer, Gavin Raeburn (Uncle Chewy), has stated that the game has made several improvements in comparison to how the demo played.

While he has stated that the PlayStation 3 version runs at 30FPS 99% of the time, it still leaves you wondering how developers can't even manage 30FPS 100% of the time this far into the consoles life cycle.

"Just a few updates: Firstly, we v-sync every frame, but allow the game to overrun if needed, which is very rare and is much preferable to a complete frame drop. Secondly, our performance tests show that the 360 is running at a rock solid 30fps and the PS3 rarely drops, being rock solid 99% of the time. San Fran in the demo is probably our worst performer when the action gets really heavy on a couple of those long straights.

"Thirdly, we don't lead on any platform. We have dedicated teams on each platform as that is the only way to get the best from each of them. Fourthly, there are some extra performance improvements between the demo and release on PS3 as we were tuning right to the last minute. This should be apparent in our forthcoming reviews. Just to be on the safe side, we also have some further improvements lined up our patch."

Outside of the issue of having a possible dip in framerate, the game may also require a patch come release.

If Facebreaker were a cheap PlayStation Network title, then we’d be gung-ho, but as of right now, the game lacks depth and caters only to the frantic button smashin...

If you can't hold a steady 30fps while others are maintaining a steady 60fps, you need to go back to the drawing board.

Still, I hated the demo, so I won't be bothering with this. There's an update for GT5P later this year which will add damage... after that, there'll be little room in my collection for any other racer.

Honostly I liked it more then gran turismo 5 proluge and i played both of them with my logitech G25 racing wheel and I really enjoyed GRID more with the speed effects and the driftings and the gear changing effects on the wheel cause you feel every thing with the vibrating effects and I'm comparing the demo with the GT5 that I paid $40 for and regret it, I'm sure the full virstion will be even more fun. I'm buying it with confedence :)

It's a lot more exciting tham GT, prehaps mostly because of damage, but then the cars damage too easily which makes it a little annoying. Nice racer though, but clearly no where near the level of depth that GT has with the exception of damage with isnt in prolog but should be in the full GT5 later on.

As for improvments, nice how they planned a patch for the thing before the game even hits the streets! God do I long for the days when developers weren't lazy and got things done right the FIRST time instead of planning to bloat our harddrives with patches because they cant be bothered to be thourough in the deve phase.

I liked the look of the demo and i seemed like a deep fun racer. Visually it does a few things better and a few things worse than GT5. Impressive.
