GRiD PS3/360 comparison video -- or is it?

Posted on May 10th, 2008 at 11:17 EDT

GameTrailers.com has become infamous for their comparison videos of multiplatform titles spread across the PlayStation 3 and XBOX 360, but they've seemed to decide to take it one step further. After the entire Devil May Cry 4 debacle that left a lot of gamers displeased on both sides of the spectrum, one would expect a similar situation from not taking place later on. They've recently released their side-by-side comparison of the latest demo, GRiD, produced by Codemasters. We've included the video below.

Now, what you just saw was a straight comparison between both formats, but it leaves you wondering as to why GameTrailers decided to pull this comparison video from their website. You might be able to find the answer out as to why in the video below.

The question we're trying to have answered much like a lot of other gamers are is, "How many other times has this occured?" In a world where gaming journalism has become heavily influenced by money, free swag, free games and press kits, we find ourselves disconnecting with the love we once had for honest-to-god unbiased journalism and replacing it with a tinted view of the dollar. Leave your impressions below.

In the end, you should leave it up to your own opinions on which you feel looks better by viewing credible sources of media. Do this by visiting the official homepages of games or by just checking the title out side-by-side on your own.

[Editor's Note: I apologize if either video ends up being removed.]

So true same goes for EGM & Gamepro who only recently started showing the PS3 in a positive light, and somtimes Gamepro wil have a review for a Multiplatform title and will only rate the 360 version im so sick of that crap its not even funny.

LOL that funny I dont know why they would do that. But it definatly show how bias a lot of so called experts are. Take into consideration when you are watching x play on G4 how many times have you seen a multiplatform game reviewed on PS3 version before the X360 version?

Shame on you GT, I know for a fact anything done on X360 should be exactly possible on PS3, so I was a little confused as to why the PS3 version of GRID looked like cr@p in that video. When i had seen many other comparison videos of games like GTA IV which looked exactly the same on both systems

This is nothing new or surprising for many people in the PS3Forums.

We have seen the media siding with the 360 even before the PS3 was launched, and this is no different, regardless what face they put on it.

I said before, that just as the media claimed it was up to SONY & the PS3 to prove themsleves, it is also up to the media to prove their professionalism & and objective/unbiased reporting of facts without clouding them with emotional opinion. Which I might add has absolutely no place in journalism.Yet, they do the opposite & prove our point..

Its hilarious that people who notice this onesided opinionated effluence are labelled as fanboys, and yet the gaming media appear to be the biggest fanboys of all & keeping their so-called "console wars" alight.

The media have an agenda & it so happens that this agenda sides with the 360.

Simply stop giving these morons site-hits...at least until they learn the meaning of the word "professionalism". They are not just trying to wound SONY/PS3, they are lying to their readers.....the very people that feed them.

I didn't even care about physics or anything like that until I saw the 2nd video. I just watched the first video thinking, wow! they both look and play great! But wow.....that's alot of scrutiny for just comparison videos. Still, it's just to journalists to weed each other out so we don't get inaccurate videos like that!

You should be ashamed PSU. Go on, have a dig at a hugely famous website when they screw up in an attempt to make you look 'professional'?  Did it not cross your mind this could have been an honest screwup?

The thing is though, not only do you post this hugely inappropiate article, you then go on to post what could probably be classed as borderline libel by implying that Gametrailers have been paid off to do this. How utterly ridiculous.

Tthis should be a forum post, not a 'news' article.

This bias isn't exclusive only for video game journalism either. All journalism has turned from an informative speech to an opinion speech... with SOME facts. The basic opinion of the speaker is coming out instead of what actually should be said. In doing so, the reader is missing out of what actually should be known, just because the reporter has a grudge toward something else. Personally, if they want their job, they will learn to take it and research into all the aspects before opening their damnable mouth and tell the reader/viewer what they need to know. In all retrospect, if someone asks me about a game, I will say "Well, if you like this-and-this in a game, it will be for you." If they want my opinion, I give it to them; this would be the scenario for an opinion, and not in a report (NOTE TO JOURNALISM! LRN2SCHOOL!).

This is a situation where the demo videos are pointless. Both systems have demos that you can check out in real time, if you have either system you can experience it right there on the spot and say whether or not the game is good. I tried the demo the other night and it kicks a$s, plus it's cooler to watch in 720p on a 42 inch screen rather than a 600x800 video window on a 17inch laptop monitor!

"I specifically used the word "we," which clearly includes all journalists (including us) into that spectrum."

Ehh, clear as mud. Read your article again- the reference to the 'we' before you posted your mini-rant was "We've included the video below.", and, unless all journalists are responsible for 'including' that video, that means you're referring to 'we' as PSU journalists. My original point stands.

"If this had been a "mistake," you would have seen the video reuploaded with the appropriate clips edited in to further support their comparisons. It's been awhile since it was taken down and fixing that issue would have taken mere minutes."

Oh, because that clearly means it wasn't an honest mistake. You're assuming far, far too much.

"This is news, whether you'd like it to be or not."

If this, or anything where a journalistic site screws up, is 'news' then why does no reputable site post it? Oh wait, because you don't post stuff like this. I think you'll find anyone successful in -any- trade won't go around while representing their business saying things like "haha, look! here's a rival making a mistake! lets point it out to everyone and make them look bad!"

"Things like this have happened before and the casual gamer doesn't ever take note of this and is therefore given the false representation of what to expect and what to believe."

Gees, I'm not going to go there with this.

"When you're a legitimate website like GT.com is, you have to maintain that sense of pride and work that got you to that point."

Yes, you have to maintain a sense of pride, which is exactly my point about why you shouldn't post this.

"Also, no where did I take a 'dig' at GameTrailers. I didn't tell people to not view their website, nor did I insult them in any shape or form."

Heh, are you a member of the labour party by any chance? I think they'd like you. :)

well as much as it pains me to say it, some ppl deserve a little attack, when people close their minds and refuse to see the fact that many websites have corrupt writers that love to let their biases morph their reviews. this is evident in many sites. its very easy to tell when a XBOX fan makes a review of a PS3 game, thats why i am a little more happy with IGN who uses sepertate teams which is how it should be, or there shouldnt be any sites that do all systems, maybe it would be better off if we just had sites liek PSU or teamxbox, atleast you dont see this kinda of crap happening nearly as much.

The guy correctly points out that it is not the first time GT have done this.  Maybe you remember a 360 vs PS3 comparison of Assassin's Creed, where they claimed the graphics are more washed out on PS3?  That's what they would have seen with the PS3 RGB mode set to 'limited'.  With RGB on 'full', there's literally no difference in terms of colour / shadows between the versions.

I've done a very small amount of research and linked to a few more offending comparison trailers below.

Assassin's Creed - http://www.gametrailers.com/player/28005.html?type=   (colour diff's)

Elder Scrolls - http://www.gametrailers.com/player/18049.html?type=   (colour diff's)

Burnout Paradise - http://www.gametrailers.com/player/29926.html?type=    (mislabeling of some clips and vast colour differences again)

These videos should be pulled and amendments should be made to reviews for people who are curious about buying these releases in future.  Even then - a lot of damage has been done because gamers with both - or no console who wanted these games may have made their choice based on these awful comparisons.

GT lose all respect for this.  These 'mistakes' only proves GT are a bunch of incompetent idiots - or very well paid sc^m.

@195South

No he doesn't need to be verbally attacked...no one does.

To be absolutely fair, he is only questioning reports provided to the gamers, just as I and many others have been questioning the media since E306 over their attitude and reports on the PS3 & lack of with the 360.

Granted, he goes about it in an aggressive manner which makes it look like an accusation ( in parts it was), but attacking him will not prove any argument....it will just inflame one more,

Although in one hand he is accusing Mr.W of the very same style of reporting that people defend, from sites like GT, IGN or Gamespot , and for the very same reasons. I think one should be careful not to contradict themselves, although I cannot say that this poster is guilty of this. Everyone should be subject to the same rules & judgements....including platform manufacturers where the media is concerned.

There is every chance that someone who disagrees with you just might highlight an issue you may not have thought about. This has happened tto me on a number of occasions, simply because I listened instead of attacking.

On the other hand, there have been times when no one listened to me and instead attacked me because of my views and opinions ( my beliefs of a media with an agenda as one example). To this day the very same people believe the same crap and are no wiser for it.

This little drama has highlighted the issue within the media for a final time with some...now some people are actually thinking back and taking stock of all the points put forward at an earlier time.

The point is...you get better results by listening and debating than you will by attacking, even if it takes a while for the points to sink in. As for GameTrailers and other media outlets? They have done enough talking and so have the gamers.....sometimes enough is enough.

Although I do agree with one point.

He cannot dictate what is news & what is not, especially when he is defending a site that has on many occasions made news from a delayed PS game, yet ignore such a major issue as an RROD or made excuses for it whilst patting MS on the back for "treating" the issue rather than curing it.

Gametrailers is a very good site and I love them for posting trailers and vids for everything. If you want news go to SponG.com but if you are looking for games come to PSU. There's nothing on this page if I read correctly that has implication that Microsoft could be bribing these sites just to let some of you know. My two cents on how this happened is that it could not have been a mistake. How could you hold a PS controller and not know that is a PS controller. If you were taking clips how could you mistake what is good and what is not, even worse if they were both the same console and they dumbed one down on purpose. It's evident that is a trickery. 1. My 360 dying is news. Go make an article about it. Okay, I should probably have said this isn't appropriate news, especially with the whole "journalistic bribery" theme in the bottom half of the article. Read further down, I'll explain there.

2. Oh Gees yes, your second 'we' lacks any "context" (as you put it) so it's fair to assume that it's the same we as the last definition! I'm not going to argue with you anymore on that, it's a black and white thing.

3. Yes, you are still assuming. :) Go look at dictionary.com as to what an assumption is; I "assume" you like that website after recommending me to it.

4. Completely different forms of media? Lol, you are both boats in the sea gaming journalism, with both of you jumping out on game review island while you also dropoff at gaming "news". Whatever PR spin you want to put on it, you both do reviews of games and are both competing for people on review island to read/watch your reviews and thus you are rivals.

While we're here, lets talk about the boat that is Kotaku. I didn't realise they'd posted an article, but that's not really the point- they are a blog! They don't attempt to take as much as a professional look on things as you guys try to; they add frequent humour and have a more casual feel about everything they do. So, when we look at what they actually posted, and we see that they didn't try to start making accusations about bribery in the industry or anything immature like that, I'd say what they wrote is fair enough for them. You however- no, I still stand by the point that you shouldn't have posted this. :)

5. Point out mistakes and how you are better is a different thing from pointing out mistakes and laughing at them from a high horse. And no, you don't see "Microsoft" as a company come out in a conference or a press release attacking Sony, you see employees come out and comment on things when pushed by journalists. Kinda like you posting on a forum your views, not on your official stance in a news article. I did word that badly before.

@Agriel, I laughed at that, not only because it came from you but because of the ridiculousness of what you're saying. Do you think I'm a Gametrailers fanboy or something? Heh, I'm laughing just writing that. Couldya post something saying "Mikleran, you're a gametrailers fanboy" if you do so that I can put it as a forum signature?

@GunTeng, from past experience 'aggressive' is the only setting this place will listen to. :)

@motzo, thanks for that! ^o)

Wow Dirt is shaping up to be a real GT5 threat, with the lighting and damage physics.  I think the cars are too strong though, real cars crumple like in BurnOut

This just drives me to be a Sony fan more. If Gametrailers if anyway paid by microsoft it just makes me hate them more. I remember a time when you could see how far you could get in Spyro and now its how long you can play a playstation game without being attacked with material such as this

Sorry Mikleran, news is still news. Why don't you start "news" about your dying 360 eh? Anyway, I believe the context is there, and if you still don't see, maybe you'll have to take English Class all over again.  I'm an English Major student, and I can differentiate between the two kinds of "we" that were used. "in the world of Journalism..." learn to read, not skim.

play17boy08 I could not agree with you more.  I've been a loyal gampro subscriber since 1989.  The last couple of issue have been so biased it's repulsive.  I will never give that crap magazine another penny (eventhough I'm sure Microsoft is giving them money).  It's honestly pathetic that Gamepro has allowed itself become so un-godly biased.  I'm sure game informer will thank them for a new customer.

Sorry Mikleran, I have never seen you jumping up and down like this when GameTrailers, IGN, Gamespot or any other so called professional gaming media site that make enormous amounts of news out of a game delay & make claims of proken promises & other Anti-SONY slogans. Yet at the same time, I have never seen you jump on them like you have here & claim they are using doublestandards for not doing the same thing with MicroSoft, while  patting them on the back for a successful PR rip-off over the RROD.

So as far as I am concerned, your poiints lack any meaning simply because I have not seen you treat the media sites equally.

Oh...and I haven't seen any assumptions made by PSU. They see the facts, post them and allow for gamer comments, yet do not attempt to make their own opinion on the matter .

I haven't read anything from them claiming GameTrailers are biased....all I have read between the lines is them questioning what was evident.

They make no statements other than provide what facts are there and they make no proclaimations of corruption or bias.

At the most they just question with well known facts. And considering GameTrailers have not made any official comments regarding this, PSU cannot rightly post any apologies or comments from any side.

LMFAO and they think people will believe that these are actual & true comparisons now?

Hardly....they have proven that they manipulate the footage, so who is to say they have not manipulated this footage even if they look the exact same. Even if they showed the PS3 as having better footage, PS3 fans cannot believe them simply because it would be thought they are doing it to gain site hits and get rid of the stink they have put on their name.

GameTrailers have absolutely no credibility for professionalism or objectiveness & nothing they can do now will change that.

Give it 5 or 10 years and maybe new gamers will never know about their BS.

BTW..I now firmly believe that anyone using GameTrailers as a source for info or comparisons should be banned automatically if they provide links to their site or their videos (personal preference).
