GTA IV becomes biggest selling entertainment launch ever

Posted on May 7th, 2008 at 07:49 EDT

Rockstar’s Grand Theft Auto IV has become the fastest selling entertainment launch of all time, shipping six million copies in its first week on sale and generating an estimated retail value of USD 500 million.

The figure eclipses previous records held Pirates of the Caribbean: At World’s End, which generated USD 404 million at the box office in 2007, also surpassing Halo 3 (Videogame) and Harry Potter (literature)

Take-Two Chairman, Strauss Zelnick, commented, “We knew Grand Theft Auto IV would break new ground in terms of the player's experience, with its compelling story line, extraordinary gameplay and action that ranges over a broad urban canvas. Now, it has broken sales and rating records as well.”

“Grand Theft Auto IV's first week performance represents the largest launch in the history of interactive entertainment, and we believe these retail sales levels surpass any movie or music launch to date. We congratulate the entire Rockstar team on creating a must-have experience that takes the legendary Grand Theft Auto franchise to a new level."

Ben Feder, CEO of Take-Two, added: "Rockstar's goal is to make each new title in the Grand Theft Auto franchise even better than those that preceded it, and Grand Theft Auto IV is a smashing success on that score.”

“Grand Theft Auto IV makes full use of the power of next generation technology, and offers players an experience unique in the interactive entertainment medium. This game sets a new standard in the industry, with critics hailing it as both an artistic and technological masterpiece.”

Stay tuned for our full review of Grand Theft Auto IV later today.

It was expected, this game let one speechless, I hate the "for bullies and gangsta" aura that people made around him, his dialogues are wonderfull, It have potential almost as Eastern Promises and could be liked for people who likes Mario Puzio work. The other GTAs didn't call my antettion, but this game is a huge step foward in adult storytelling, most of the characters are grey, not white or black.

Congradulations to RockStar and Take-Two. But is that money enough for Take Two? Seeing as they nearly went bankrupt...

Thanks Rockstar for producing the best game of all time! They'll do it again with their next GTA in probably 4 years.

glad I still don't have this game though... I'd much rather not play this game and keep my PS3 running smoothly then get it dominated by a game that will work for all of 30 seconds lol.  PS. I have a launch 60 gig one so I've heard I'm at the highest risk

@Emo-Mercenary, 500 million is what they made in just the first week. That doesn't include how much more they will continue to make. I think they are fine on cash.

I have a 60 gig and have encountered only a few hickups during multiplayer.

I also have a 60GB launch console, yet nary a problem. The initial load screen takes its time, but since I don't play online, I signed out of the network. Now the initial load time is reduced by half at least.

This is pretty cool for R* but I am still disappointed in the fact that it was created with the Xbox hardware holding it back, imagine what this thing would have looked like if they had the ability to utilize blu-ray, and a hard drive. (NOTE: Not all xbox's have hard drives, so developers have to program knowing that they can't garantee the ablitiy to cache anything to one.) This is the only thing giving the PS3 version a slight edge, the fact that we cache 3gigs of data to the harddrive is probably the reason for the slight improvements noticed.

If GTA4 is getting all this cudo's and they're saying that this game "makes full use of the power of the next gen. technology", then I can't imagine how Metal Gear Solid is going to stack up! MGS4 is going to be much MUCH better.

People are dumb enough to buy into the hype of this game.  Terrible controls and  the ugliest graphics of any PS3 game. Glad i only rented this hunk of mess.  If anyone believes this game controls and looks better than COD4, Devil May Cry 4, Ninja Gaiden or Oblivion(which is an open world) please raise your hand so you can have your head examine.

GTA may not be the prettiest game around but that's never stopped it from selling millions of copies because it's enjoyable to play, if you dont like it that simply your problem because you're clearly in the minority. Meanwhile the rest of us will be buying, playing and enjoying a game which wasnt bought purely on hype but rather bought based on the fact that each game before it has been a joy to play as well.

@Bino4169. I respect your opinion, and I agree that FF has good stories, but I don't like how you compare mistical/fantasy games plot with crime plot. The Godfather and LotR are great movies and good stories in their respectives genres, there is no need to put togheter in the same competition as also happen with GTAIV and FFs, they are difirentes genres. I hate the competition of reducing everything In the same category.
