HD DVD Cancels pre-CES '08 Press Conference

Posted on January 6th, 2008 at 15:06 EDT

It’s about that time of year again where the crowds of people pile into little Las Vegas, Nevada and attend CES 2008. We’re always anticipating new stories and information regarding what could transpire during the convention itself and often times we look to pre-CES press conferences for that information. However, this year, don’t expect to hear anything out of the usually loud HD DVD camp. Shortly after the breaking news of Warner Bro’s taking their film library exclusively to Blu-ray, HD DVD ownership announced that it was pulling its pre-CES press conference.

A lot of people have been concerned about which format to purchase due to the long-standing remembrance of Beta vs VHS. People looking for a winner may not have to wait long with incidents like this happening. With HD DVD losing releases as epidemic as The Lord of the Rings Trilogy, it seems as though things will take a turn for the worse for said camp.

It may be too early to suggest dumping off that HD DVD collection now, but we’re sure the decision is coming sooner than later this time around.

The fact that there are rumours floating about that Microsoft are about to announce a new Xbox SKU with a built in HD-DVD drive is hilarious when you consider this news...they actually expect people to trade in or sell their current 360 (which buggers you when you plug your current hard drive into a new console i might add) and then buy a 360HD-DVD edition...ho ho ho ho ho ho ho!

I was shopping for HD Tv's for my mom and I notice a lot of people was buying BR movies and myself included buying RE: Extinction. I looked over at the HD dvd section and a customer asked me why everyone was buying BR.... I told him the situation with warner and where the market share stands for BR, he got pissed... but calmed down when I told him that there are two options to fix this, turn back his hd dvd player and get a hi def combo that plays both formats or get a PS3.... he's thinking of getting a player that plays both formats, little did I know that there were four buying HD dvd and then decided to go blu ray and bought them a PS3 because they were there trying to decide which format was better and had overheard me talking to the customer...... they thanked me later. GO BLU RAY!!!

also.... my mom got a 52' HD tv with a 120 mhz frame rate with 3 hdmi ports all i can say is WOW, I want one so bad i'm really thinking about buying one with my income tax.

I just hope all those HD-DVDs will get released in Blu-ray as well.  There are so many I want to see.

As soon as I get my HDTV, I'm going on a Blu-ray spree. (46" Sharp Aquos 1080p)

Hope Microsoft dont start to put more money into HD-DVD now, just to extend the "war" and destroy them both(BD and HD-DVD). Microsoft only supports HD-DVD so that neider of the formats wins. After that they want to take "monopol" on the HD- movie market with download/streaming services that they ar working on, but isnt ready to lanch just yet. That will hurt every store that sells movies in physical form(because Microsoft takes that income) and it will suck for us that want movies in our movie shelfs! But if the movie industry doesnt start to make money on Blu-Ray or HD-DVD soon they wont continue with it and only make DVD's... Its because of that its a realy good thing HD-DVD is loosing ground. I hope for Blu-Ray to succeed now and fast! Some people complains over the price of blu-ray and are angry that the industry cant stick to two formats, but thats only possible in the short run. If you have two formats the players get more expensive and cant go as low in prices in the long run as DVD-players today, because its two licences that have to be paid for a combo Blu-Ray/HD-DVD.

HD-DVD is has been stabbed, it's gasping for air, waiting for blue-ray to finish the fight.
