HD format war over in 18 months, says BDA

Posted on September 3rd, 2007 at 03:32 EDT

Frank Simonis, chairman of the Blu-ray Disc Association, believes that the High Definition format will be over within 18 months.

As the senior director of communications at Philips as well, while Simonis doesn’t completely concede to the idea that Blu-ray will be the sure-fire winner, he does believe that the consumers will decide the format wars within the next 18 months.

The answer, surprisingly, didn't contain the information that Blu-ray would win from the chairman himself. In reflection, Simonis believes that it's difficult to give a definite answer because of the unexpected moves some companies make---such as Paramount's recent decision to support HD-DVD exclusively. Simonis stated, "Due to the fact that we have some hard competition which sometimes makes strange moves, it's very unpredictable. But I think in the next 18 months it will be very exciting to see what's going on."

After discussing the present issues, Simonis foreshadows what will come to fruition within the next 18 months. "With more products coming to market, the price erosion that will for sure happen because competition between the different players will automatically fuel that part of the business. And of course the broader support that we get from the software industry will excite the consumer very heavily."

The HD wars are certainly an interesting one; at least we seem to think so. They require no battles, or actual casualties. Instead, a couple of corporations choose what is best for them, with the consumer's want left at the end of the rope.

Chances are a couple of things are going to shake up the HD industry. The BD 2.0 profile is going to be out in the wild, The prices should have bottomed out by then (like the BDA Promised) and every company that was suppost to release library will flood the market. Seriously everyone in the  Blu ray camp has yet to match the release frequence of universal. When they do , It will be insane how much media and public perception will be changed because Blu ray will be in their face.

Waaay to go Paramount. Just delaying the inevitable. Which doesn't make much sense since Disney is exclusive to Blu-Ray, and Disney also owns Paramount. Sooooo I don't see this going to well for HDDVD either way.

As far as i am concerned we in America have chosen Blu-ray and so has Japan, and Europe based on sales number. Price are coming down for the players as well.Paramount just pulled a Rockstar deal on HD-DVD lol.

These "HD Wars" are starting to piss me off...seriously is it really necissary to have 2 formats trying to be top dog?  We all know (well those of us with common sense and an IQ over 60) that BluRay is eventually going to win, so why prolong it?  If companies really have consumer interest in mind, at least release your movies on all 3 media until a clear winner is announced.  This BS with Heroes only getting HD-DVD release is absurd.  I want the crap on BluRay...I'm a consumer, where are my interests?  I don't see them anywhere, and I'm sure many other people would have liked to get the set on BluRay.  Having the studios take sides is absolutely idiotic...release all 3 formats and let us decide the winner...don't try and do it for us.

Wow...are you people saps!  The BDA has only been making these same BS claims for over a year now.  Now that Paramount's dumped Blu-Ray, the damage control has been in high gear.  Yeah, keep waiting for HD DVD's demise that never seems to come -- they just seem to get stronger with every arrogant utterance from the Blu-Ray camp.

I mean, I understand this is a playstation website, but really...can't you see through the BS?

^Stronger, what did you have to smoke today? Come on, puff puff pass. What's really hood? This is 100% rational, HD DVD is getting some support and deals and it's still get strangled!!! I'm not @ all naive, this is evident....HD DVD is done, PUT A FORK IN IT!!!!!

Getting strangled?!?  Are you serious?  BOTH formats have accomplished next to nothing since inception, with Blu-Ray selling 2.2 million discs and HD DVD selling 1.5 million discs in TOTAL!  That's a 1.46:1 sales disparity, and it's virtually nothing!  If that's all BD can do with 90% studio support (until recently) and a BD drive in every PS3, then that is pretty pathetic!  These #'s are straight from Videoscan data up to the end of July, 07.

Guys it's very dangerous to hold PS3's future to the Bluray as a media standard. HD is not taking off and its not driving PS3 sales which is very plain for all to see. Playstation was number one last Generation and after a year we are running last. This is bad. I don't want the same thing that happened to Sony's personal music business to happen to their console business - but this crazy fixation with Bluray movies could bring it about. Sony spent years and years trying to flog their own music download players and look what has just happened... From Walkman inventor -  the king of portable music devices to absolute failure. Apple has cleaned up and even Samsung now sell twenty times as many MP3 players as Sony's Atrac players... Four days ago Sony finally announced that they will dump their Atrac standard and will use Microsofts standard... My point is PS3 is expensive because of Bluray its holding back sales of the PS3 which really should be kicking R-sses right? - and now games are being held up just so publishers are being pressured to fill the bluray disks with fluff in a silly bid to justify Bluray's existence... We should not encourage this. It's going to kill Playstation and for what? Nothing - The sales of HD is a peanut. Get the price of PS3 down and get excellent must have games out - that is where Sony should be focused.

@Bobby

Paramount didn't dump Blu Ray you retard. HD-DVD PAID Paramount $150 million for a 18 month exclusivity deal LOL. Much like they paid Universal. And that deal expires in less that 4 months. I mean think about it, 300 was released on Blu-Ray and HD-DVD at the same exact time and the Blu-Ray version is beating it in sales 2 to 1 that's 2 TO 1 in case you're still in denial.

I know that you have your HD-DVD blinders on and will totally not even hear that, but COME ON, WAKE UP. HD-DVD is desperate and the future does not look good for the failing format.

Raytown,

Who are you calling a retard?  The amount of money paid has come from an anonymous source, and has yet to be verified.  As to the length of the contract being for "4 months" -- what the he*l are you smoking?  Paramount states it is an "indefinite" arrangement, with most reports stating it's for AT LEAST 18 months!

If you're going to refute somebody, try using facts instead of BS.  Maybe the BDA should hire you.

Look I know absolutely nothing about this sort of stuff but the word desperate here doesnt sound right...

An organization which can reported write a cheque for $150 million in cash doesn't sound all that desperate to me... But hey, Im just saying what it sounds like. In the end I think the whole HD thing is a farce. This HD adventure is going to cost every participant a lot of money. What a waste.
