Heavenly Sword producer hits back at Itagaki

Posted on August 6th, 2007 at 05:40 EDT

Kyle Shubel, producer of the upcoming PlayStation 3 exclusive Heavenly Sword, has responded to criticism from Team Ninja's Itagaki Tomonobu who in recent interview with EGM labelled the game as “half assed.”

Itagaki, an outspoken critic of other developers and game series stated “I’ve never played a good game where the developers put a big icon of the button you’re supposed to press onscreen. I look at Heavenly Sword and it seems really half-assed, because it’s asking you to do all these button-timing sequences but you are not getting much payoff from it.”

The disparaging comments immediately provoked a response from Shubel, who replied: “My response to Mr. Itagaki would be that the intent of the Hero sequences is to empower the player to experience events that would be nearly impossible to play in a natural platforming state… for example, making the player run down ropes, leaping from rope to rope as they’re being cut from underneath you, all while dodging other objects - that would be a frustrating experience to 99 percent of our users if we were to force them to do that manually.”

In related news, the latest issue of PlayStation Magazine details several new features on the game, including the proposed availability of six anime clips on PlayStation Network, which will be used to tell the game’s story. No further details are available at this time, however. In addition, the article reveals that motion-sensing controls in the game have also been improved upon, and confirms the title will include a total of 48 missions spread across six acts.

Heavenly Sword is scheduled for release in North America from September 12th; stay tuned to PSU for a full review in the near future.

well i personally think this game might suck cuz of the demo exp and its really been taking a course to seem like GOW...this game has been in the works since 2002 and when GOW came out most of their ideas and story theme changed to be related to GOW so im really not too interested in this game. BUT HEY maybe i will develop an interest with upcoming in game movies

Well, the demo didn't "wow" me at all.. And I knew that the game would have approx. 48 missions or levels because the demo is approx. 1 GB, and 2-layer Blu-ray disc is 50 GB. And please Ninja Theory, please.. Make that hair look great! It sucks right now!

Is luis14ftw banned? That's nice! xD

I actually agree with Itagaki. Heavenly Sword didnt really seem like that good of a game, after playing the demo. It feels too much like God of War and the fighting system feels kind of thrown together. I just feel like its a bunch of hype behind a facade of positive opinions. I know Im about to get a torrent of negative comments because of this one, but go ahead.

I smell hater, I know I will be buying HS, I know everyone else will too, I thinlk it will have the most sales, and I think it will stay ranked in the top five longer than people think,I think overall it will do numbers like Halo(not a diss, had to pick the game with the best numbers) and I want everyone to hold me to these words if I'm wrong.

Well I do believe the comment from Team Ninja was uncalled for, but after playing the HS demo I must say that the game was ok but  it didn't impress me that much.

Why are people making a big deal out of the interactive cut scenes? Resident Evil 4 had interactive cut scenes and we all know that game ruled. Heavenly sword will rule in three ways; the story, the graphics and the gameplay. Sorry but Itagaki's best games are always half assd next to

Hmm...heavenly sword Demo was ok, but it IS a demo and not the final release. Lets talk some half-ass with Ninja Gaiden. The CAMERA on NG was HALF-ASSED, the freakin thing couldn't keep up with a lot of action. The CG was HALF-ASSED. How dare you release a Hi-Def game without rendering the cut scene videos in HI-DEF?! YEAHHH, Wake the #@! up! Although Ninja Gaiden was a fun game, there was plenty of HALF-ASSED flaws in it! Its funny, the camera on the original Xbox version was much better >.< and you can't improve the PS3 version?! Go figure. Itagaki needs to chill BIG TIME!

@madeofsteel: If HS is old school, then what is NGS?? It's a rehash of an Xbox 1 game with a few new additions.

Furthermore, people keep complaining that this game is too much like God of War...well if memory serves me right, God of War didn't suck, now did it? I think this will be the first great, original action title on the PS3 and it's a certain buy for me. I mean, the demo was like 5 minutes of a game that will have like 50 levels. I don't think it's fair to totally write off the game yet.

haha, fight em off.  that was some weak sh*t that was said about HS by the ninja gaiden dude.  I mean, HS is such a fresh and great looking title, I guess if you have been rehashing the same game for years, than naturally you will be sour about it.....maybe they suck so much, they can only think of ways to re-issue the same game....thats why I am not buying ninja gaiden, and WILL be buying HS......because its fresh......not old........

All I have to say is this:  I played NGS demo and I won't be buying the game, I played HS demo and will definetely buy the game.  As for the comment, if the entire game was like that then I would be mad too, but this is just in certain areas that would really be nearly impossible otherwise.  Also, I've played plenty of GOOD games that do this.

Never played a great game with button on screen? He didn't play God of War? Gears of War? almost every shooter ever? "Triangle to climb over" "A to take cover" etc. Not getting payoff? did we play the same demo? Pressing the correct button at the right time creates a whole new sequence. I think that's a great payoff.

Seriously, did that guy play GOW? It had scenes where you had to push the button displayed repeatedly and it was amazing. He's an idiot. The demo for HS was completely jaw dropping but it was awesome, and showed a brief example of how huge this game will be. HS will sell, will be a great game and will do well. I think his comment was way off the wall and he shoulda definately thought about it before he opened his mouth... even if HS didn't do good stating such a comment from one game developer to another who knows the work required in making a game is a huge display of lack of respect. Just sad.

Well now that I realize who was doing the trash talking, no one deserves the upper hand in this argument. Ninja Gaiden was half-assed (why do people consider this one of the best for PS3, is our selection really that bad?), and, to be honest (and not just high on hype) the demo for Heavenly Sword sucked too. Please, dont tell me "Well its just a demo, you cant judge a game based on a demo". Youre right, you cant, but you can get a damn good first impression. Its not like the developers are going to hand you the most boring level of the game for a demo, that is NOT going to sell the game. They want to give you a demo that has representative quality for what you can expect in the whole game. So if the demo sucked (which, in my opinion, it did), then the full game isnt going to be much better. Before anyone decides to bash me, please read my whole post, and make an attempt to formulate a mature and intelligent response before doing so.

Well, Mr. Itagaki, excuse the developers for not wanting Heavenly Sword to be such a 'kick in the nuts' game (*NGS*) that's so hard they throw the cordless SIXAXIS at the wall in a rage. (Maybe the 'boomerang' controller design was a good idea?).

who cares if the game is similar to GoW, how many games aren't like another game. I mean dude all fps shooters are basically that, fps!  so because this chick is fighting people with a sword that has an option that allows you to make them chain swords, that makes this like GoW. dude if that irritates you then don't use that stance. Anyway, whats wrong with having similar games if they are both good. I mean NGS is just DMC with a ninja, or its Onimusha just faster. So get off the "HS is GoW" excuse, get a better reason, an actual reason to dislike the game.  And don't hate the game because you don't like the demo. We know the demo is short but  was what was available good, yes. Then, go watch the full demo, thats about an hour long.

No, the fact that it is alot like God of War is a reason not to like the game. There is a serious lack of originality out there these days, and when a game has such glaring similarities in gameplay mechanics, it needs to be pointed out. Yes God of War is a good game, but thats just it, Ive got God of War, I dont really need another game thats just like it. Developers need to be trying to think outside the box and come up with some new and fresh ideas. LittleBigPlanet is an example. So, lack of originality is a valid argument toward the quality of a game.
