Hirai admits PS3's first year was "difficult"

Posted on May 7th, 2008 at 04:08 EDT

Sony Computer Entertainment President Kazuo Hirai has conceded that the PlayStation 3 experienced a somewhat “difficult” first year on the market, and acknowledged consumers were disappointed with the choice of software available.

Speaking at the company’s PlayStation Day event in London yesterday evening, Hirai commented, "It's fair to say that the first year of PlayStation 3 was somewhat a difficult one.”

“There were some teething problems, success from our competitors, and our customers were a little underwhelmed by the range of titles that were available."

"This was something that we were very much aware of, and something that we were confident we could over come," he added.

He also acknowledged the disappointment among consumers over the delay of online social networking space, PlayStation Home, but again reiterated the application would not be made available until he was completely happy with it.

"I realise this announcement was disappointing to many people, from TGS where we were aiming for a spring launch, so please accept my apologies for this delay,” offered Hirai.

"But as I said at Tokyo Game Show, I would not open up Home until I was completely happy with it, and I still stand by that statement.”

"We've been testing Home for some time and I simply feel that as great as Home currently is, it needs a little bit more time before it's ready for the wider public - something we firmly believe we can provide in the autumn," he said.

I´m loosing my faith in HOME. Its been delayed over and over again... I dont think this will deliver to all the hype its been gathered. Will it be that good? Will it take the PS3 on higher levels? Or, lets be realistic here, will it be entartaining for longer than a week? The concept seems good but I want to play PS3 games not play second life or a MMO Sims! Thats my opinion.

I seriously hope that HOME will be much more that Second Life or MMOSims. I know that HOME will make me play games for awards to display in my virtual apartment but who will visit it?! My friends? Wil you visit your friends apartment looking for an item?

Too many questions about HOME and still too much time for it to arrive. I dont know....

I was never interested in HOME to begin with, and I don't like The Sims, so.. :P

I'd rather be social in RL, wich I am, so I don't really want/need HOME

@ Neameto - You shouldn't compare Home to Second Life or The Sims - Home is not something you 'play', and is not a game. It's a Social Networking solution, with a real-time, interactive 3D interface, and much more besides.

It will be 'entertaining' for as long as you have friends with PS3's who you wish to communicate with. At the moment, you might have a cool video on your PS3, but you can only tell your friends about it. With Home, you'll actually be able to show them. It has the potential to bring the PlayStation community much closer together.

Home is a social launchpad for games, how can it be boring? Anyone who thinks that home is an MMO or some sort of sim obviously haven't been paying attention.

psn id: gingo.... i'm glad they have realised that the software lineup wasn't the best but this year should be amazing for software and as for Home i'm glad their taking their time with it nobody wants a rushed mess

Herd that HOME was a FREE feat. So no point in complaining. But I still hearing people are bad mouthing the PS3 for lack of great games. C'mon now, Halo3 and Gears does not count as 20 games! And almost nobody are buyin any Wii titles, how they've managed to sell the system is beyond me. I only have Zelda and Mario. Both great games, but again, they don't count as 20 titles!

I think in some ways you can totally compare HOME to SL or, even better, THERE as far as the social aspect goes and if you the user leverage the service in that way. However, tack on all the other goodies and I think there is potential for home to be great (like the rooms for uncharted, RFoM "which..at this point I guess that room will be for RFoM2", warhawk..)
