Take a look at Mirror's Edge's upcoming demoSony Computer Entertainment President and CEO Kazuo Hirai has questioned the longevity of rival platforms, highlighting the success of the company’s previous videogame systems as evidence that its latest home console, PS3, will remain on the market for many years to come.
Speaking with Gamesindustry.biz, Hirai commented, "I know some people have been talking about who will be number one in this generation, and what have you, but before we get into that question, what about the lifecycle management?"
Elaborating, Hirai pointed to Sony’s last-gen console, PS2, which still remains active on the market nine years after release, surpassing the lifecycle of both the Xbox and GameCube.
"We certainly don't do the consumer the disservice of basically saying that the consoles have gone by the wayside because we have a new one," he said. "Right now, a prime example? PS2 is nine years into it. Where's the Xbox? Where's the GameCube?”
"Same thing with the original PlayStation. At some point we looked around and asked what happened to the Saturn? Where's the N64? So if we're doing that, let's compare apples to apples, and for me, because we're on a ten-year lifecycle, unless we're talking ten years it doesn't really make that much sense to me."
"It's really a matter of looking back after ten years minimum and asking what you've actually accomplished in terms of the installed base, in terms of the business that you generated for the internal first party studios, in terms of the business you've generated for the third party studios, in terms of the business you've generated for the retailers."

I do like how long Sony has been supporting their consoles, I just hope they put a bit more effort into the PS3 right now!
I'm really hoping that Sony stick to their ten year plan, although it's kind of worrying to think that future PS3 games could be a strip down port of a 720 game.
I reckon as soon as PS2's Lifecycles over, sony will have more effort for the PS3..?
PS3 is the most powerful console so far, dont think anything can top that.
I said it before and I say it again. I HATE IT WHEN THIS GUY SPEAKS. HE IS SO F'N ARROGANT! He brings the media hate down on Sony like a friggin anvil! Doesn't he see how the American media treats people who are full of themselves?! This isn't Japan! And this guy is supposed to be Sony's "man who understands the NA audience" (I just read that on Engadget)! I'm not saying he's wrong, you are just not supposed to say it out loud. Or at least, wait until you are dominating before you talk trash. Good grief.
^ Yea. And they're still releasing PS2 bundles and are even introducing a new PS2 model. It's a cash cow - PS2 will be around for many months to come.
I agree with Hirai. MS is all about rushing products, Nintendo is always about trying to make some kind of fad statement, and Sony is always about getting a good product on the market for a long time.
Take Microsoft's huge RROD problems....I wonder why this happened? Maybe because they rushed their product out just to try to turn a profit, because the Xbox did so poorly in camparison to the PS2 last gen. Thus, they've spent close to a billion replacing their consoles. I guess it doesn't matter to someone who can throw money at problems rather than do it right the first time.
He should start looking at the ps3 life cycle, you keep loosing money, and 3rd party exclusives, there will be no one will wanna buy a ps3.
to Odium Generis Humani:
All the Microsoft and Nintendo PR guys (expecially the American ones) are really arrogant and full of themself...so uumm...shouldn't the American people know how to talk to American people/press..?
So I think you are barking the wrong tree...And sorry to say this to you (in case you are an American), but American people tend to be a bit full of themselves.. Not all of course, but the PR People for example.
But maybe Hirai is quite "arrogant" and straight for a japanese person...So I guess you are right in that, but you can't compare him to Reggie Fils-Aime for example.
psn id: gingo... i like sonys plan of 10 year management but people are worried about whats happening just now and all people cant be patient when a rival console is offering better just now than what will come in the future from ps3
What better is Microsoft or Nintendo offering right now?
PS3 has great games, so does Xbox, and maybe even Wii has some...And the taste for games is matter of opinion so you can't really compare those. But all the consoles have few undeniably great games.
So I would like to know what you (gingo) mean?
Yeah, I don't think the 360 will have as long as a life cycle as the PS3. However, this is something Sony needs to really look at because my sources say MS will be releasing their "next-box" sometime 2010. IMO if this really is the case, Sony really better watch out because they are still trying to play catch up with MS in a lot of ways, and if MS's plan does come to fruition I think that will throw Sony's 10 year plan out the window considering that MS will without a doubt have the most powerfull system on the market when they launch the "720". Unfortunately I don't think the full potential of the ps3 will ever be demonstrated because it will just be overshadowed by MS's nextbox.
MS's "Nextbox", huh? So MS is going to tank on the 360 in just 2 years? What will 360 fans do then? Get a PS3.
actually i do still play occaraina of time from time to time, on the 64, but it is one of the best games ever so ill let hirai's comment slide :P
Didn't the PS1 come out in 1995, PS2 in 2000 and PS3 in 2006? That's 5 years btw them Kaz. i know Sony keeps support for their console 4-5 years after your next-gen console comes out but don't make it look like we won't see a new console when the other 2 competitors will launch theirs.
Hey the home page of PSU has another VIRUS!!!! how do I contact the webhosters of this site to let them know? This isnt the first time this has happend. It might be some crazy Xbox fan boys doing this.
If M$ next-box has more power than the ps3 then it'll cost like $1000 cause M$ are too cheap to lose as much money as sony is with the PS3.. M$ is going casual slowly cause they see the success with the Wii..
A 10 year plan sounds all well and good until... 10 years from now you are playing a dinosaur!!!! 10 years ago I was playing Half-Life, I can't imagine playing a game like that today when we have Hi-def graphics that blow it away. Nothing against Half-Life, it was incredible... THEN! I will gladly pay for a new system in 5 years and have the best graphics available and most of you would too... we're gamers that enjoy great story telling, game-playing and graphics in our games. Technology advances faster and faster by the year... look at your cell phone! If you gave me a 10 year old cell phone right now, I'd ask if it could browse the Internet, take pictures and video, play mp3's, play games, or even get directions. Then I would proceed to throw it away, grab my current phone and laugh. Welcome to 2008 not 1998!!
I dig that Sony continues to support older systems when their new systems are out. It allows those with empty wallets or those just wanting a quick fun time with a less advanced system to have a go with.
I wonder if there's any truth in the rumor that Sony was redesigning the PS2 again? I heard a rumor a few months back about a discman sized PS2 for like $79 available sometime in the near future. That'd be nifty no? I would so buy one :D
Gamecube is 100% playable on Wii so they have not dumped their users in the poo. Xbox 360 is trash but atleast you can play some of your older Xbox games on it. If this Kaz guy really meant what he was saying they would put back BC right now and allow users to keep their PS2 games and play them on PS3 instead of penny pinching.
And instead of trying to keep PS2 on life support - let it go now and start supporting the people who have paid the high price for a PS3 only to see the cheaper consoles take our exclusives, get more content, and have a bigger software range at lower prices. It's this stupid arrogant attitude that is hurting Playstation. - This guy is all talk and no action.
As far as 10 years go, take a look at the ATi 4870 graphics GPU out today. Within three years we will have 8 & 12 Core CPU (not SPE's) & 8 Core GPU's that have ten times the transister count of Cell. The thing is technology is accelerating not slowing down and as the industry gets bigger and more money is being spent, the investment will only increase. Life cycles are getting shorter. Next Gen Wii will probably be equal to a PS3 and Xbox 720 will be double the performance of a Wii. They need to stop wasting time and start supporting PS3 whilst it still has a performance edge.
No Kaz, I am not waiting 10 years for Home, and I am not waiting 10 years for a decent software line up. Pull your finger out. Work for today not promise more in the future.
Of course all of your gamecube game's work on the wii and alot of your xbox game's work on the 360, but for some reason alot of ps2 game's does not work on the ps3. Drop the ps2 already and focus on your lackluster library for the ps3, how about that.
@Odium_Generis_Humani
Please don't speak unless you understand what you are saying, 360 has been out for 3 year's and it is going to do a 5 year lifecycle. 2010 will be the next xbox, which i feel is perfect. I mean when it take's you 3 years at launch to get out your first gen title's then yeah the lifecycle should be 10 year's.
@Utalkin2me
Thank you for actually reading my post, and I agree with you completely and I couldn't have said it better myself. To be honest with you, if Sony continues on the path their on now, not only will the PS3 not last but a couple more years, but there will be no PS4.
@Odium
dump the 360 after 2 years??? Where have you been man? The 360 launched in 05.
