BIA: Hell's Highway 'Realism' trailerHitachi has recently completed a four-layer Blu-ray disc that can store up to 100GB worth of information.
The company has also stated that with a simple firmware update, all Blu-ray players on the market should be able to read these new higher capacity discs.
This announcement comes not long after the HD DVD camp received preliminary approval for a 51GB three layer disc, which features 1GB more than the current BDs.
It is very unlikely that any movies will make their way onto these new quad layer discs, as 100GB is much more space that is needed. Also, until these larger discs become mass-produced, it will be much cheaper for movie companies to make two disc sets. Games, however, may benefit from this move, as space is the biggest limiting factor right now.
Stay tuned for all the latest updates on Blu-ray as they become available.

hd-dvd has no chance now. this war is over
Straight to your face HD-DVD!!!
Blu-Ray ftw
games are gonna b so much better now. more levels. better graphics. no limits
w00t 5th post
100GB on an optical disc,so now what Toshiba?
another nail in hd-dvd's coffin
100GB is not too much for a Lord of the Rings movie ;-)
psn id: gingo.... so far ps3 games have been using between 15 and 30 gb of space will there ever be a need for the 100 and 200 versions that are being created and sold, i very much doubt it this generation
WHOO! HD-DVD, take THAT! xD
Muahahaha... HD-DVD is so owned now! Another nail in the coffin for HD-DVD... Just a few more...
@ Gingo; I think in the future larger amounts of space will be used, either for larger levels etc or less compressed cinematics... I think it will be used, not right now but sometime in the near future.
I bet hd dvd thought that bluray wasant going to do something about that. 100gigs top that
It was only a matter of time. I wonder if the load times would be larger due to the larger storage space. I guess if drive speeds increase it shouldn't be a problem.
Good on you BD. May all the backers of HD-DVD suffer for not chosing you :) Especially M$
Wow game developers can practically make a never ending video game now... Great stuff!
A movie may never need a 100gb disk but a HD tv serise collection would be awsome. Just think, no more multidisk sets, just one disk for an ENITRE season in full HD with extra features and stuff. The first Game to use this would be freaking spectacular I bet.
The problem is... if they create bigger games, at what point does it stop? If there is a bigger game that takes up say 100gb and takes years to complete, how much would that game sell for? I for one think they are too expensive already.
might as well forget about DVD's now.
sweet
Nice, Games will get the most use as space is limiting............you here that M$, space is an issue even at 50GB. Hopefully this means no double disc games in the PS3 lineup------ever.
Sony developed a 200gb 8 layer disc in 2004 and back then they said they was to plan mass production of 100gb discs. Also TDK made a 200gb disc last year.
HD-DVD isn't even at 50gb yet. The 3 layer disc isn't 51gb if each layer is 15gb. II thought this was already cleared up, HD-DVD just wanted to sound bigger than blu-ray by adding 1 more GB. Anyway HD-DVD will be dead before any tiple layer HD-DVD comes to the market.
EAT THAT hd dvd
Way to go Hitachi!!!
Lets put this into perspective for the M$ camp. Halo 1, 2, 3, Halo Wars, Gears of War, Bioshock, Forza 1 and 2, Lost Planet, and Dead Rising...ALL on ONE Blu-ray disc. Is Microsoft screwed this generation? Should they have adopted next-gen storage? I'll let you decide.
space a factor still? This is the first I've heard anything about that. Anyway, GO Blu-Ray! Didn't another company do this too? Toshiba or something? I know I heard of a 100GB disc before.
wow .. but I never think they will use this capacity for Games of ps3 .
and I am really feeling good when I heard that HD-DVD has like this capacity about 51 then we never suffer from the shortage of DVD9 which's due to make many companies overlook adjusting games on xbox 360 .
I am more confedint of HD dvd's future , because it no doubt will expand the strength to 150 giga not only 100 giga ..
but I want to ask you >
is kind of this HD DVD available on Games or it's entirly dedicated to Films and Movies ???
So gaming developers could litterally perhaps use hitachi's 100gb 4 layer bd discs for like maybe lets say ffxiii uses it i think it would be very nice but 50gb is just as good. :).
Another thing 51gb from the hd dvd camp them mentioning it isnt such a big deal since they dont have much companies backing their support lulz.
wow 100 gigs! thats a lot, doubt we will ever need anything like that right now but its still cool. aqnd i guess this is hitachi and everyone else who suppports it rather nice way of saying blu ray will dominate no matter hd-dvd does
why do I feel a 101 gig HD-DVD in the near future
How will people with a normal blu-ray player get these firmware updates? They just want to enter the disc in and play right? What solutions are there?
this is good news for us ps3 owners, becuase if we ever needed 100gb for games we could and the 360 is still limited to 9gb. hahahaha
its ganna be 200gb later wen they add 8 layers ahahahahaha omg devs must be drooling LITERALLY !!!!
THIS IS A BIG STEP TORDS BETTER GAMES!! =]
Can anyone smell all three Lord of the Rings films (extended cuts of course) on one disc...in HD????????? thats a 12 hours sit your bum in your seat BD if ever there was one...of course, chuck all 6 star wars films in and you're laughing! Add this news to the news that the PS3 is getting a price cut next week and the system will be flying off the shelves...speaking of the price cut...had to warn a guy not to buy on in HMV today...still charging £425 for the "old" value pack...consider that my good deed for the week...
lol this makes no diffrence cause blu ray was already smashing HD-dvds face in the mudd... the final nail was already in the coffin all this did was throw the coffin off the cliff ....
Maybe I'm an idiot, but 3 layers each at 15gigs doesn't equal 51. That is what each layer on an hd-dvd holds, maybe someone can clarify.
No limitations to games now...
Hitachi said that they only need a system update to allow the blu-ray players to play these 100GB blu-rays, right?
So I'm sure Sony's working on a ps3 update for this :D
Beautiful!
@JD: lol, nice try, New Line would never put all three LOTR movies on one disc, too much money in selling them all seperately. I guarantee they will release theatrical cuts first, then a few months later release the extended. Double and triple dipping ftl.
YES! AWESOME! Hitachi you guys rock
@jrlcgmx: They will update firmmare the same way they do for the PSP and PS3 owners who don't have internet. Sony would use the disc to carry a firmware update and they would update that way.
@Fry-Man: Yes, in HD-DVDs, each layer has 15GB capacity. However, like hard drives, they can make sectors that are closer together to allow higher capacity. It's the same way hard drive capacities have reached so high and stay the same size [physically].
.......Nice. now make a longest game ever on the disc. will ya?
I'm surprised that firmware updates can help Blu-ray players read these new quad-;ayered disks. :) Though I am really digging the idea of having WHOLE seasons of Scrubs, Desperate Housewives, Family Guy, etc be just on one disk. The main question with that is if it will cost twice or even three times as much since it has yet to be mass produced.
Also, will this effect downloadable content in the future for PSN or will they go hand in hand? I guess we will have to wait and see what pricepoint and what ventures Hitachi is going for once they unleash it upon the masses.
Uncool, maybe when they do finally start to use 100gb BD's...they may test it out on tv series' rather than a movie or games (porting a season of a tv show shouldn't take as long as making a game!). So then Star Trek fans can be treated with a decade of seasons with less discs in the packages!! But I can't see this kind of thing happening until late next year?!? So that prices may equate to what it would be now!? Here's hoping to greater games with larger worlds! As far as I know, it is sounds (great quality sound) that require a lot more space!
I do not think developers wanna even mess with a 100gb disc way to time consuming but great for movies and tv to blu-ray shows yup hd-dvd still has support from various companies and this 100gb blu-ray might not even reach production you never know so you can never say its over till its over
Ummm this is a dumb argument. OHD's start at 300GB for the Optical disc by InPhase so ... based on the Bluray has more capacity potential so it wins argument - Bluray would loose to OHD.
Capacity & performance must increase in direct proportion. So has anyone increased the transfer rate of Bluray as it is appallingly slow. OHD's are 2200% faster than sustained throughput of a Bluray.
The joke here is that Hitachi publicly dumped Bluray as the optical product it was planning to use in their HDS Storage business. Instead, Hitachi's media subsidiary; Maxell signed an agreement to go with OHD instead and is now a developer of OHD media. Hitachi does not make a single commercial product using Bluray. It announced the discontinuance at the StorageWorld Symposium held in Singapore at the beginning of the year. Hence this is a funny story.
There's something I don't understand. I see a few arguments about transfer rates (someone said BD is slow?) From what I know a 1X BD is 36Mbps. That's doesn't seem slow at all to me. Somewhere it was said that BluRay requires 1.5X for movie playback, 54Mbps. That seems pretty fast to me. Am I missing something?
i guess it will help devs make better and longer games.. as for movies i dont think they need all of that space!
dude...if a company made an 8 bit graphic game it would have like a squillion levels on one of these...then again...no one can be bothered doing that
HD-DVD= pwned
@ Fry-man: It's the same principle as 650 and 700MB CDs. They are the same size just have a different data density, thus more storage. You can cram sectors together as much as you want, as long as you have a laser precise enough to read and write to the sectors.
Click me for a link to laser information.
And has anyone seen the Star Trek collection commercials? 49 DVDs!!! That equals 17.052 single layer Blu-rays, 8.526 dual layer Blu-rays, and 4.263 quad layer Blu-rays. The packaging alone would save enough for the discs!
Musikguy. Unfortunately some companies list missleading specifications to hide these things. Bluray at 1x is 4.5MB per second and 2x is 9MB per second. Some brochures will list it as Mega bits instead to make the number appear higher IE: muliply the figures I just gave you by 8 hence 1x now appears as 36Mb per second (note the "b" in Mb is no longer a capital letter). If they listed capacity the same way, instead of saying 50GB of storage it would appear as 400Gb (IE: its very missleading). Other more unscrupulous marketeers will go one better and quote Burst transfer rates (54Mb) which is the peak throughput but not sustained....
Bluray 2x offers just 9MB/s which is very slow. The faster DVD-ROM drives have data transfer rates of 20x (that means 20 x 1,350KB/s) which is 27MBs (Or in Bullcrap terms: 216Mbits per second) but you would reasonably expect most users to only have a 12x or 16x capable drives which is about 18MB/s - 20MB/s (160Mb/s) - In fairness the real difference between Bluray or DVD after accounting for rotation & track layout it is pretty safe to say that the fastest Bluray drive is about equal to a 11x or 12x DVD ROM. But considering that a DVD is 9GB and it can transfer data at 20MB per second it will take approximately 7 - 8 minutes to transfer all the content off the DVD and onto a hard drive. But because Bluray has a 50GB capacity and ability to transfer at only 9MB per second how long will it take? Too long - this is why data & performance must increase in direct proportion.
psn id: gingoisthelord holy sheeza thats wicked
Hitachi FTW. HD DVD can eat a big one, there are already games pushing the 50 gig mold, like KIllzone 2. IM sure XIII and Versus will also need a very high storage capacity
hd-dvd nd 360 hav no chance.
