Sony’s PlayStation 3 console has passed the two million sales mark in its native Japan, as the company enjoys yet another week of strong sales in the territory.
Data obtained by Media Create shows that the flagship console sold 11,303 units for the week ended April 6, passing the two million mark a few days later.
The PlayStation 2 appeared to be catching up with its successor, selling a respectable 10,423 units, maintaining its lead over the Xbox 360, which sold 1,452 units of hardware.
Meanwhile, the success of Sony’s PlayStation Portable continued on the strength of Monster Hunter 2G’s release in the region, with the handheld console selling just fewer than 121,000 units, taking the top spot in the process.

Ouch, a dismal 1,452 for the 360! Its nice to know that the PS3 is still doing strongly in Japan.
The PS3 is a worldwide console.. The 360 is just a US product.. Only people who think that the 360 is the $hit is us americans.. I agree with gingo its pointless of M$ trying to sell in japan.. They dont sell hardware and neither software..

It's not really doing strongly in Japan, 11,000 units is actually pretty bad if you compare it to the Wii, DS, PS2, and PSP. It's been outsold like 4-1 by the DS and Wii and 12-1 by the PSP, and even the PS2 is really close to it.
Sony will always do good in Japan no matter what. The last time I checked the Xbox 360 hasn't even sold 600,000 units in Japan yet. And the Japanese sure love portable gaming devices because the PSP and DS are WAY up on the sales charts.
I'm pretty sure that the increase in Japanese sales has come from Metal Gear Solid 4. And whenever Final Fantasy XIII comes out, Japan will be going crazy for PS3's.... it will probably be a bigger rush for PS3's in Japan when FFXIII comes out than MGS4.
It's just good to see that the PS3 is selling well in more than just one territory. Microsoft should just give up on selling their console in Japan because the only places in the world that even care about the 360 is the U.S. and Europe (mostly the U.K.) The reason why I still think that the PS3 will outsell the 360 is because it's a worldwide console and it's not limited to just one particular area for success.
the psp is a beast. I hope sony realizes, now, that software sells hardware. Monster hunter really helped them, big time.
not much of a surprise other than this occurring in 2008 and not much sooner...sony has always done well in Japan and with MGS4 forthcoming, this was inevitable...
