Konami’s Hideo Kojima recently spoke on the arduous development cycle of his critically acclaimed stealth-action title, Metal Gear Solid 4, revealing how the project initially began life during the PS3’s early development stages.
Speaking with the BBC, Kojima commented, “We started to work on Metal Gear Solid 4 four years ago, after finishing work on Metal Gear Solid 3.” “At that time we really didn’t know what the PS3 was going to be like, so the first two years was all about experimenting, developing and trial and error."
“In the last two years, we’ve know what the PS3 is capable of, the specifications of it and how we can utilise it… PS3 is a monster machine. That’s why it took so much time to create Metal Gear Solid 4.”
Kojima added that the team were able to gain a lot of experience with the machine before it was released, and as a result could provide feedback to Sony as the game progressed.
“Since we’re developing only for the Sony format, Sony has given us a lot of advantage before the actual release of the hardware. So we had many meetings with them to discuss the specifications.”
“We analysed this black box before it was released, and we experimented with it and we gave Sony a lot of feedback, like, ‘Can we do this and can we do that.’”

Now that is what I'm talking about. Allocative efficiency .. you scratch my back and I scratch yours. I expect a MGS5 using fully all 6 SPUs, further enhanced graphics and AI that even puts Killzone 2 to shame. PS3 FTW !!!
@Odium_Generis_Humani
Sure, the more places you put it, the more money you could potentially make. Kojima, from what I understand, is a bit of a perfectionist and seems to put a lot into these games. Spreading it across multiple platforms with different specs would force him to reduce some of the artistic input in the game to cater to mulitple platforms, and this goes either way (XBOX->PS3 or PS3->XBOX). And, on top of it all, whats the point of having these two separate systems if everyone goes multiplatform. At that point you might as well set aside different consoles and make them standard like PCs...
@jiajia
It is imposible tu use al 6 SPUs only for a game, due to the fact that the OS needs at least 1 SPU. IMO.
yea it does show there all the hard work they put into MGS4. my only concern is that all the hard work don't get strip down to 2 or more disc just so it can fit on...... well you know. As for MG5 I have a feeling it will be JOHNNY who take over but i want RAIDEN to be the man. plus i think MG5 will go multiplat but i hope SONY do everything to keep it even if it mean buying out KONAMI for publishing rights
Who knows what Kojima can do with there next games espically with another MGS game in the future.
It's time for another ZOE game.
!SPOILER!
That fight between Metal Gear Rex and Ray ( i think it was the names) left me wanting more! Forget MGS5 atm. Give us ZOE3 running on the same engine like they did with ZOE: 2nd Runner.
ladee da
correction the new game will be Metal Gear 5 solid snake isn't in the game anymore. not unless they do a prequal for Metal gear original games. should be awesome to see what they think of next
@pirulee
The PS3 actually has 8 SPUs one is inactive to produce better yeilds during manufacturing, one is reserved for the OS and therefore leaves 6 SPUs and 1 PPE for developers to utlize. So jiajia was correct in a game potentially using 6 SPUs.
Developing on a single platform allows them to make the best game possible. When you want art you dont tie an artists hands by forcing him to do two lower standard paintings at one time, you let him do one to the best of his ability.
alpha 2,your apsolutely correct dude... think about this,if you give a painter 2 borads to paint the EXACT same thing on (regardless how much effort you put into it) its going to be different (some bad,some good).. its hard for the painter to focus on that ONE painting wen he knows he has another one to paint the exact same thing on,and weather you like it or not its extra pressure and focus you dont need.BUT if you give him ONE peice of board,then he can utilize his creative mind as much as he wants and take as much time as he wants to creat the perfect masterpiece.
NOW... that goes the same for kojima... he said in the blu-ray bonus disc that comes with the special edition MGS4,that he HAS to make it to PERFECTION,and EVERYTHING has to be PERFECT or he wont be satisfied... and in order to utilize his FULL creative mind potential he was able to see that with the ps3's power and capabilities,he could bring that masterpiece to life without tons of pressure and stress and limitation's.
if he was to multiplatform it,that would mean extra focus on making the EXACT same masterpice for another console with not enuf power and limited capabilities and very little to no potential,so he chose the smartest and most reasonable route and went with the ps3. :) sry for the long paragraph but i had to say it.
I also WANT ZOE3, please kojima!!!! :D
@ post 3:
There's no pirating on the PS3 though so if you want the game you need to buy it so that alone can give more cash than simply porting to the 360.
The 360's only market is the US market otherwise the PS3 has a larger share, so any PS3 game put on the 360 is simply to allow the US market to play a PS3 game it doesn't work the other way around because the overall market share just isn't there over the PS3.
People and companies are being lead on by higher sales on the 360.
@Lavos13
The PS3 has 2 PPE and 8SPU, 1PPE is soely used for the XMB, the other PPE is for game the 7SPUs are purely free to use in games, 1 SPU is dead though that's probably changed now and all 8SPUs are probably turned on in the newer cells.
mis-information alert!
@xtago
Lavos was 100% correct...
The Cell has only 1 PPE and 8 SPU's....one SPU is disabled, and ALWAYS will be...there will not be a PS3 with all 8 SPU's enabled...one of the remaining 7 SPU's is dedicated to the Operating sytem...which leaves the developers 6 SPU's to work with for games...
Great game, had no time to play past the first act but can't wait to find the time!
I'm amazed he thought the PS3 has got 2 PPE's lol! That would be nice.. Having two PPE's both with 6 active (useable) SPE's.
and that is how you develop for the PS3...lots of dedication and research...take notice developers...
PSN: yungder
Kojima should have said:
´´Yo Sony, how about some 256mb of extra RAM?!``
PPEs SPEs how may of you even know what youre talking about or can even concretely verify that any of it is true? 'if wikipedia is to be believed - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cell_processor
its true because that is what the Cell Broadband Engine is...its 1 PPE with 8 SPE's....and on the PS3 one is disabled...and 1 is reserved for the OS...
this is just simply fact...
