LittleBigPlanet DLC to be free at launch

Posted on July 21st, 2008 at 13:54 EDT

Tongues began wagging yesterday after David Reeves suggested that LittleBigPlanet owners could earn money from their creations. He described it as an "iTunes meets eBay" system and even went as far as predicting that someone could become a millionaire through the game.

However, Sony Europe today reassured LBP fans that user-created content will in fact be free.

"SCEE and Media Molecule can guarantee that all consumer-generated content will be free at launch. We know how important this is to the LBP community and what we want most is for people to enjoy playing, creating and sharing their content."

"Obviously, we're also excited about the future and David was talking about how user-generated content could potentially evolve in the long term. Any decisions that are taken to evolve LBP in the future, will include the community and focus purely on enhancing the user experience."

Thankfully we won't be forced to dig further into our pockets come October, when LittleBigPlanet is released, but the confusion does raise an interesting issue. Just as regular YouTube content providers can make money through ad revenue, will we see PS3 owners making money from user-created content on future titles?

I really hope they TRULY enhance the game in the future, and REALLY listen to the community. A lot of games promise to do this, but in the end fall very short.

It kinda sucks that you can't use your own music for levels, and I know the community will be asking for this. We'll see how good they listen.

Nice, but...

1: who will buy these levels created, and

2: how do we get the money? Direct to a bank acount or saved on the PSN to buy games or even (by the time it comes out) furniture and clothes on Home?

this is way off the subject but desperately need an answer.  Is the movie rental and purchase option now available for PS3 and can I use it from an international IP address?

If you haven't downloaded the E3 from your ps3 and watch it, you need to. It had more to it then I thought. my friends have a xbox( I'll never go that way) and when they log on online on a pc there friend list pops up and and skill level and some cool stuff pops up to let them know who and what game they are playing like when you sign on to psn on your ps3. They said that they would have it this fall. for the ps3. So the FALL can make or break SONY this year.

I'm glad that the dlc will be free because there would have been so many flaws with the system and 'making money' and people would have been trying to find out ways of how to rip people off which isn't fair, LBP should always have free dlc because that's what they told us, play-create-SHARE!!!!! not sell

That's good news in my opinion.

But I was thinking, it'd be cool if companies payed some people to put advertisements in the levels. And the payout would be tied with downloads.

I said it once before, if it's just one level at a time paying would be stupid. But if a level creator built an entire campaign like 8 levels long with completely customized graphics (and bosses too, especially after seeing the boss battle video!), it would easily be worth a few bucks.

But that's not something we have to worry about at all right now. All DLC is free regardless of who made it untill such time as the've had a chance to figure out how to create a reward system that works for everyone.

I heard the best 10 levels created each month will be sold to users for $5. If true, this is a good plan as 99% if the content will of course be free yet there will be a greater demand for us to try to create great levels and make money.

I'm in the middle with this issue.  If they choose tocharge for some user created material I have no problem with it. Nobody can force me to buy anything. If the content is free then of course that is fine as well.

I think the buying/selling aspect could work really well if its done right. I think if someone puts up some innovative, quality levels and starts to create some buzz for themself in the community, that after they've built up a following for their levels that they should be able to start charging a little for their more elaborate levels. I'd gladly pay maybe $1 for a quality level from someone that's proven themself, and I would hope that maybe a couple hundred thousand more people would feel the same way.
