Manhunt 2 back in the news

Posted on November 21st, 2007 at 06:18 EDT

Last month, Rockstar Games released the controversial title, Manhunt 2 for the PlayStation 2, PSP, and Wii platforms.

However, the release was just a breathe of fresh air for Rockstar as the title became the bull’s-eye for US senators such as Joe Lieberman, Evan Bayh, Sam Brownback, and presidential candidate Hillary Clinton.

According to Game Politics.com, these four Senators sent a letter to the ESRB president, Patricia Vance, in hopes of changing the way things are handled so far as game ratings. The general US public knows Lieberman as the 2000 democratic Vice President Candidate, but gamers will recognize him as the forefront leader of the “anti-videogame” hears over the past decade. After all, it was the efforts might Joe to have the ratings system created after numerous Congressional hearings back in the 1990s.

The letter to the ESRB reveals that the BBFC was very light on their review of the Manhunt 2 title and that perhaps, it should have never received the M rating in the first place.

The letter describes Manhunt 2’s as "unremitting bleakness and callousness of tone”. They seriously believe Manhunt 2 no matter what the rating was, simply should not have been released.

They even make judgment on the Wii version saying that the controller permits adolescents to act out violent manoeuvres with their hands. Nintendo and violence is something that hardly ever goes together in a sentence but the Senators found reason to make that possible.

To put it into a conclusion, the letter stated, "In sum, we ask your consideration of whether it is time to review the robustness, reliability and repeatability of your ratings process, particularly for this genre of 'ultra-violent' videogames and advances in game controllers."

Rockstar just cannot catch a break.

Lol, poor Rockstar. One point though, its been given an M rating so only ADULTS can buy it so the point of adolescents playing the game isn't rockstars fault cos dats not who they aimed it to. I aint too big a fan of manhunt anyways but people  should have a right to buy it if they really want it.

If they do manage to ban Manhunt, will that be enough or will they move to ban other games the deem too 'violent'.

Please America: Do NOT vote Hilary in what ever you do. The b*tch'll change everything we love about gaming and she'll have the power to do so.

What a load of crap. Its the same here in the uk.The fact is that over here it should get an 18 rating, meaning only over 18s should play it.If some kid plays it then its either the parents fault or a retailers fault.

To try and blame violent games for violent crimes is just shifting blame.I've played violent games for many years and not once have a I thought it would be fun to go around killing people.

I went into a store a few months back to buy a new game and while I was browsing the shelves I overheard a young child of about 8 years old telling his mother which game he wanted her to buy for him. I noticed that he picked out Grand Theft Auto Vice City for the PS2, which over here in the UK has a 18 rating. The mother obviously didn't seem too bothered about the 18 certificate printed on the cover artwork because she proceded to buy the game for her son. I think a lot of blame has to be put on to the parents in my opionion. A lot just dont seem to care what games their young children are playing.

Even the game with rating. The parents still buy the games for theirs kids. Maybe all the senators need to be educated to understand that the parents fault, not the developers.

Djrussell, I think we should be more afraid of what she'd do IF she became President other than in the gaming areas..

Thing is...if this goes through then they have a precedent for doing the same to other games...the UK has a reasonable policy on things...slap an 18 on it and sell it to peopl over 18 but that means parents have to go with that too...like chilledbreeze said, i've noticed people doing this in the game stores here but i also noticed that a few of the guys in Gamestation (the manager included) will not sell a game to someone if they have any suspicion that someone underage will be playing it...so if a kid picks a game thats over his age limit and "mummy" tries to buy it they'll tell her to bolt...

When it comes down to it, Manhunt was a terrible game...it was boring within about 15 minutes and there are far better games out there but it's the bad ones with the wrong type of gameplay that attract the bad attention...anyone remember "Thrill Kill"? that was terrible and got banned for being too violent...

All in, if they try to ban a game we actually care abotu then i'll be first in line for the uprising but until they do let them fight their fight...chances are rockstar are doing this to take attention away from GTAIV...diversionary tactics...gotta love em!

I don't see that this game is any worse than films like Saw or Hostel, and it should be able to be sold with a suitable rating, including here in the UK.

"They even make judgment on the Wii version saying that the controller permits adolescents to act out violent manoeuvres" - so don't sell it to adolescents, just like you wouldn't sell an R or 18-rated movie to them.

People outside the gaming world - like these idiot senators, as well as politicians the world over - need to get to grips with the fact that videogames are no longer aimed exclusively at children and teenagers. It's not rocket science. Idiot parents who buy adult-rated games for Little Johnny aren't helping matters. My cousin's wife buys 18-rated games like GTA for their 15-year-old kid, which is ridiculous. The ratings are there for a reason, and she wouldn't dream of letting him watch an 18-rated movie, so... why buy the game? The ratings are from the same organisations, and have the same meanings - why do some parents think it's okay?

Letter to the government.

Let me be the parent to my children. If you want to raise my children for me you pay to feed them, clothe them, house them. Otherwise mind your own GD business or go phuck yourself.

Not only do I completely disagree with their ability to rate the games altogether, I also disagree with the idea that video games are 'corrupting our youth'. It has been said many times by many gamers, that even though people play these games, we don't see a huge increase in crime, violent murders, or anything like that. If it were true that violent video games directly correlated with violent actions, our world would be stock full of murdering gamers, just think of how many gamers there are that buy games that are violent, then see if even a small fraction of them commit violent actions. I know that personally I like fighting, but I liked that before I ever got into video games. The world needs to stop hating on video games and start teaching children and adults alike that violence for the sake of violence is just stupid.

wow.... this is just stupid. i can name more than a handful of games more violent than MANHUNT 2. there wasn't any blood in the killings and the screen went out of view and all flashy so you cant even see whats happening. im no MANHUNT fan at all. i picked it up to see what the big deal was and still cant see it. look at the darkness, one of the goals is to eat hearts out of your victims chest. even MANHUNT 1was more violent. MANHUNT 2 is hardly a game at al one of the worst ever made. the language in the game is FAR worse than violence. i cant think.reading that made my brain melt into stupid juice. whats the big deal? i say everyone play MANHUNT 2 1 time to see what i mean. just do not spend more than $1 to do so.

People find in the game things they can never achieve in real life. I do not thing that real racer driver plays Gran Tourismo. NBA star doesn't play basketball with controller(except it is for promotion of the game). Mad guy and serial killer is tired of murdering. Somebody has to develop "Government SIM" where player has to make decision of sending their army, cutting the budget for social help etc. Would this "power play" game be released and what rating it can get?

oh god people are so damn sensitive its freakig down right retarted. If you got kids that are F_cked up in the head then you should take a better time disciplining them and stop pointing the finger @ game industries. Most parents I know when i watch them pay for a 18 rated game usually do just cause, some even ask me about the games and i give them an honest opinion about it and they look at me and shrug it off lol ...

so as JD stated more blame should be towards the parents and not developers and use manhunt as a distracion for GTAIV to sneak its way on stores

Come to think of it.... I hope Rockstar doesn't waterdown GTAIV because they getting handed to them from the government..... sheesh...... and i pay my tax dollars for them to do this... huh..... funny

I HATE politicians, but this is low even for them.Leave our games out of politics and tell the F UCKING irresponsible parents to pay more attention to their kids, not ban it because little timmy's mom was too busy getting laid to not see the game is rated M meaning 17 and above not a fu cking five year old.
