Microsoft predicts 40GB SKU later this year

Posted on July 28th, 2007 at 06:40 EDT

Microsoft’s Xbox director of strategy, Andre Vrignaud, has labelled the USD 599 80GB PlayStation 3 as untenable for the coming holiday season, stating that Sony would need to offer a 40GB SKU for the considerably lower price point of USD 399, possibly as early as thanksgiving.

"[I]f they don't move significant hardware this holiday, they'll basically be dead for this generation," said Vrignaud, in an email to MSNBC’s Level Up. Elaborating, Vrignaud insisted the company would also have to lower the 80GB SKU to USD 499, as well as making available a cheaper model in time for thanksgiving; however, he predicted this would eliminate not only memory card and built-in Wi-Fi functions, but also hardware pertinent to PlayStation and PlayStation 2 backwards compatibility.

Sony is currently offering the 60GB PS3 for the reduced price of USD 499; however, this is only applicable until stock runs out, where the company will instead sell the new 80GB model, due to go on sale in North America from August 1st.

Stop saying first post. Nobody wants to hear it. Anyways, I dont think any of this should be payed any attention, Microsoft will say anything they can to make the PS3 look like a worse machine. They think they should drop the price along with wi-fi, mem cards, and backwards compatibility? So we can have a console as horrible as the 360? No thanks Microsoft, I think I paid extra money to get those extra features. Maybe theyve forgotten that if it wasnt for Sony's Playstation 2, backwards compatibility wouldnt have been around.

rofl, dead my ***, M$ don't know anything, and besides how can they comment on the PS3 like this when the PS3 is doing better than the PS2 did in the exact same time frame, not to mention the fact all Xbox 360's sold till around June all have their "Design Fault". So M$ i think it's time to "Shuddupin ya face!"

I think the PS3 is an amazing machine that is only getter better.I saw the value in 60GB model right away and got one on launch day. However not everyone thinks like me or can afford or wants to spend $500 or $600 US. Sony still needs to get these people to buy a PS3 so the installbase can grow. I really think it would be a good idea to have a second machine that doesn't have wi-fi, memory card reader, ps2 chipset, and has smaller hard drive if these reduce the price. Sell this model for $400US would be fantastic. Don't take this the wrong way the PS3 is going to sell like hotcakes given the super awesome lineup of software coming but Sony could improve and this is actually a good idea.

‹----------- you see this you fools @ microsoft??? Worry about that with your 1 BILLION dollar loss looming over y'all heads for releasing faulty software ??!! I don't see how these Morons over there can have faulty motherboards in their next boxes floating around and still find time to bump their gums. It just eludes me how they get involved with these smear campaigns against The Black 3rd... really sickening.

Microsoft, the master of too many SKU saying that Sony need another one! Let me see, they have a 360 with no hard drive so devs cannot make games with hard drive in mind. Then they have a premium, which is still not good enough since they then came out with the Elite. Now, those gurus think that Sony needs another SKU... If they cannot do it correctly for themselves, why anybody would think their opinion matter is out of my mind!!! They should definitively try to do their very own business right before looking at others!

WTF? It makes me wonder why he has to talk about PS3. Doesn't he have a system to market? He should make a prediction on when his company's console failure rate goes down, til' then he needs to STFU about other systems, because got lots of work to do, plus he doesn't even know other companies strategies,

Lol, he's only saying that in fear! After the "price drop" sales increased just like that! In Japan, the PS3 has always been superior to the 360 and also in Europe. And recently the price drop made the PS3 sales to even beat the 360 in USA!

This guy just proved he is an idiot. The 40GB model if launched....and I doubt it.....would still have BC because the BC is handled by the CELL and the firmware. I think this is more of a wish list from the M$ camp. Sony would never take away the Wi-fi and it impossible to take away BC. I also dont see them removing the card readers again as the cost to do so would be so minimal.

Yeah and maybe they'll make one without a HDD and piss off the game makers by providing an insufficient way to centralize your saved game data. Then Sony will bump up to 100 and 120GB, then make some 250s and 320s!!! Fix your own damn consoles problems before you try to smear Sony. 18+ months I've waited for a MS console worth my money. I still have yet to see one. No wonder Moore left...
