Gamers who aren't so fond of motion control may have overlooked the high-flying dragon title, Lair, which came out last summer to an overwhelming amount of critical detestation, largely due to its controls. Lair relied almost solely on the motion sensing capabilities of the Sixaxis, which turned out to be a love it or hate it system for players. Factor 5 President, Julian Eggebrecht, recently spoke with IGN on Lair's critical reception and the possibility of updated controls.
"Well, obviously we've got this huge gap there where basically if you read more casual comments -- on Amazon, for example -- to the overwhelming degree they are pretty positive. I think that everybody who got the controls actually enjoyed the game." said Eggebrecht.
"What's disappointing to me is that almost every single person in and outside of the industry who is little bit more of a hardcore gamer had a huge problem with it, and we, quite frankly, didn't anticipate that. I hope that a lot of people realize that underlying the problem they had with the base control, there actually was a really good game there. That's at least what I think. Well, what else would I say?"
It's here that Eggebrecht hints that differing control options could materialize in the future.
"If we find a chance in the future that would bring Lair to the audience which didn't get any access, that would be fantastic," continued Eggebrecht.
"I can't say anything quite yet, but there might be something in the works there. We might have a chance yet to bring those back to the table and hopefully, if that should happen, they would give the game a second chance. Nevertheless, we definitely took a long look at the results and learned a couple of lessons. If you're on a platform where this whole motion control is something new and not being pitched as the main feature of the platform, you should probably give the choice between having different control schemes, there is absolutely no doubt about it."
We certainly agree with his last point; choice is always superior to lack of options. More on the possibility of updated controls for Lair soon.

hey @velocity, this is a FIRST comment!
this game looked good to me but when i got all the negative feedback on the gameplay i passed on, did i do the right chose or was i wrong?
I passed on this as well because of the negative feedback. It looked stellar, but 60 bucks is a lot to something people give 4/10's to. or was it 3? idk..
point is, there were more critically acclaimed games out to spend 60 on. Games I still don't have. COD 4... UT3? I'm look at u two.
@princevegeta1980
First mistake; you listened to other people whom otherwised would've had a lesser informed opinion than the one you made when you chose not to get this game. I ignored all reviews, bought the game cause it looked like a breath of fresh air, and I'm glad I did. The only thing reviewers got right were frame-rates, but I'd say the frame rate issue is similar to Mass Effects'. You get used to it and move on.
The motion controls, once you get used to them, make this game incredibly fun especially during take-downs. Best scripted event yet! You shamed yourself when you chose to take another opinions over your own. Next thing you know it, you'll acknowledge the fact that Halo 3 truly deserved those high scores, compared to better-developed games like Uncharted: Drakes Fortune.
And please look beyond the fact I compared a X360 game to PS3 game for the sake of understandment.
its a great game though it did have its faults the though controls were not one of them it was the numerous graphical glitches that annoyed me but the rest of the game greatly outweighed what faults it had
@FantasyStar, if what you say is true than i might pick this one up after all, it's true that the originality of the gameplay is what that got me interrested in the first place but with all the games that came out on ps3 i preffered getting cod4 especially when games do cost 60 or 70 euros i didn't want to spend my money unwisely, and i still have stranglehold and assassains creed to buy. @alti, trust me, cod4 is really worth getting, i'm not too an onnline player but with this baby you'll be hooked quck time just like me and the solo mode is breath taking
well atleast he recognises the mistake they made and its nice to hear that they may offer a second control system.
I have the game and traditional controls would be a great plus!
I rented Lair. Didn't get to far but i thought the game had a ton of potential. The motion controls fit the overall theme but having a traditional control option would have been great. It would have given folks a chance to focus on game play rather than the interface to the game. They need to do an update to fix this immediately so people can enjoy the game. i hope they don't try to relaunch it. Lair would not get noticed with all the new stuff coming out this year.
I liked the controls, I didn't have any problems at all.
Well, I was one of those people a little to hesitant to even give this game a rent, guess I should have. But after reading so many negative reviews I just haven't seen a true reason to invest the time and money. Plus, to be completely honest, I'm not really into the whole sixaxis dea anyway. Options for turning it on and off are definately a requirement for games now. It is good, however, to see that at least some companies are taking criticism and using it to better their games, I'm looking at you EA.
i was really expecting more graphically out of the game... the background textures look so bland to me and the script and acting was sub-par at best. the controls weren't really an issue, they just didn't feel responsive enough to me.
psn id: gingo.... this would probably be a good idea by Factor 5 but i fear that this may be too little
Ya know, I actually enjoyed this game..
I don't suppose an update for the game that's already out would work for something like this?
i agree with FantasyStar but this game was horible at the start and fixing some problems would not save this game it was a big let down i was looking forward to buying it but the game is truly unplayable. Maybe next time factor 5
I rented it, and got a good way through it. I never had a problem with the controls, except at first some times I would forget to use the motion and try to use the thumbstick. I really liked, but have the option to not use the motion would be great, that was one of the things I thought was nice when comparing the PS3 and Wii (pluse a lot more). And I don't see why it couldn't be done as a downloadable update. Hopefuly it could.
i played this game and the controls sucked. i would give it another chance with 'traditional controls' though.
@princevegeta1980
I'm glad you're giving it another look at. Lair is a great game and it deserves to be played at least once to formulate your own feeling. Name a game that's as unique as Lair on the PS3 or Xbox 360 that uses Motion Controls to a breadth like the Wii.
One thing I've noticed is that they didn't feel like the controls aren't 'responsive' enough. Mind everyone that thinks that played the game I ask this. "Did you actually try to take it easy with the controls and not jerk it around like a hungry fat kid with candy?". You have to go with the flow of the dragon's movements and handle it like a woman. One more thing that I've seen that actually happened to me when I was playing Lair was it the controls were less responsive during the jestures to either do a 180 or boost when your PS3 isn't leveled with the SIXAXIS controls. I felt the lag and it made the game frustrating to play. Once I cleared all obstacles between the PS3 and my controller. Ensured that my wireless appliances did not interfere with the channel. I enjoyed my experience again.
Lair isn't a perfect Motion control game but goddamn everyone who thinks this game is less than stellar for at least attempting something new and original. It's shameful that gamers shoot down originality just cause it feels out of the norm, yet we praise the next Call of Duty for its repetitveness of gameplay and one-trick upgrades. Example, the move from WWII to Modern Warfare was like zOMG to people!. I understand that people have tastes and everyone is entitled to their own, especially. What irritates me is that those same people that have different tastes are the same people that review games on a professsional level and thus, adhere to the masses. Which in turn, does great injustice for the game known as Lair. If you still hate motion control after giving Lair more than just a 1 hour glance, then you are certainly free to disparage this game. But to overlook the technical achievements this game has made and the presentation, gameplay, and story is an injustice to art itself.
I think I've made my point.
LOL. I like how he says the there should of been an option for which control type you would like.... shouldn't he of said something before the game shipped....?
I'm torn with Lair. I want to try it cuz I've heard from some respectable people that it was a great game once you get past teh controls and... then there's the overall "OMG IT"S BROKEN CR@P" that most reviews spew.
whoever has any other person make the decisions for them is a damn tool!
I hope you members here that rellied on someone else word/review to sway you away from this game should take a look at yourslef in the mirror and ask yourself this question: Am I a tool because i cant think for myself and need someone else to do the thinking for me? This game was freaking awesome!
If there is one thing Factor 5 ought to do is implement different control schemes and usage/non-usage of six-axis controls. And possible a training simulation of going through with the controls before going onto the actual game (VR mission) if you will.
To anybody, well the reviewes were off. The game is a lot better than most people say. The motion control takes a bit to get used to, but after that it's a piece of cake. But the main issue with a lot of bad reviews was about the controls. Anyway besides that there is the fact that once you get the hang of the controls then the game can become extremely short, which is a bummer but is becoming a lot more common in today's games.
Lair is a great game. Amazing visuals, awesome story, epic soundtrack, and above all fun. I don't know why there was so much hating on it. Probably just a chance to bring down the ps3 by 360 fans. But I found no problem with the controls. They just added to the games appeal. It would be cool if they did add another option though, because I know a couple of people who haven't quite grasped the sixaxis controls yet would probably love this game if they found out it had a more traditional control scheme. I agree that giving the player a choice is a great idea. Not everyone is going to be willing to jump completely into a new concept so soon.
@fantasystar, i think your comment's has changed the opinion of many people about this game and i do like motion controle, i think that it's used enoughed but on the other hand having the choice in using it or not is a good idea too, motorstorm with motion sensing is quite hard
