BIA: Hell's Highway 'Realism' trailerThomas Bidaux, Director of Product Development for NCsoft, has said that he doesn’t believe PlayStation Home will effectively sell more PlayStation 3’s, suggesting that its success is entirely down to the consoles installed base.
Speaking to Gamesindustry.biz, Bidaux commented, "One of the limitations is linked to the PlayStation 3 - so the success of Home is 100 per cent tied to the PS3's penetration into the market.”
"I don't think you can say you will sell more PS3s because of Home, but if the PS3 had the right penetration in the market, then yes - Home will be very interesting."
Elsewhere, he cited Sony’s past history of keeping a product on the market for a significant number of years, in addition to its strength as a hardware company, as an integral part of NCsoft’s decision to partner with the firm for a number of upcoming releases.
"[Y]ou don't want to roll out an MMO and make it obsolete because of a new platform a year after that," he said. "You want to have your MMO for many, many, many years - as many as possible.
"So the PlayStation 3 is a good platform for us, and we assume it's going to be around for quite a long time. Early adopters, and the early days - we don't really worry too much at that point."

Thats great
He's right. Home is dependant on those who already own a PS3. I don't think people are going to be buying a PS3 solely for Home but it will be one of those things that'll pull their interest towards the console to check out it's titles as well. He's also right about the hardware and not having to worry about new consoles coming out. I mean, Microsoft tried to beat out everyone by a year and let the original Xbox die in the process. PS1 and now PS2 had support well past a year into their successor's lifetime so they don't have to worry about their MMO's dropping off when a new set of consoles come out (I'm hoping this gen pushes 6-7 years. We'll see if Microsoft jumps the gun again).
But Home isnt an MMO. There's no real objective with home other than providing a place for people to connect. It's easier to find people to put on your friends list if you like them first. The only monetary investments in home are entirely voluntary which makes it easier for people to spend the occasional micro payement here or there just like with the PSN games.
Well... yeah... I thought that was the whole point? I never thought Home would sell consoles either - but instead unite the community it already has to give them something extra. I for one love the idea of a free online community hooked to my PS3, and I love the idea of being able to play my games online for free and download demos, etc. Something the 360 DOESNT offer.. instead they charge people for that kind of stuff. But looking at this from a consumer point of view and not a fan.. given the fact that the PS3 has a free Home online community, i'd be more inclined to go with that for the extra stuff it presents.
Could this guy be more vague? "Home will be very interesting" wtf does he mean "interesting"? Even if Home was to be released now the PS3 has a 6 million user installed base, at least half of which will use Home.
It's amazing how some people can talk so much yet say so little.
did xbox live convince people to buy a 360? idoubt it. in my opinion it was the halos and gear of wars and whatever other games those people play that got them to buy a 360. home on its own won't get people to jump up and buy the ps3 but i think it will be a factor because its a free online service. Free. heres a perfect example. look at the success of myspace. its mgs4's and gt5's and ffxiii's that will sell ps3's
Ya, I don't think Home by itself will bring people to the PS3. However, I do believe that if home is as good as they say it can be, then it could pull people who are on the fence about which system to go with.
IMO Home may not be a large factor in selling consoles to certain markets or age groups, but I do not agree 100% that Home would not sell any consoles.
I agree with alchemyuser1. lol
"Penetration"
HOMES GOING 2 BE MINT WEN IT COMES OUT
psn id: gingo.... when people hear about home i tihnk it will make people realise that sonys online is better than xbox live so i tihnk it will sell more consoles
Maybe if they made Home available on the PC also, but with locked features, like you can't buy anything from it, and whatever. The people from the PC version would see the people from the PS3 version as well, but non PS3 owners would be clearly identified so you can easilly tell who you can do more stuff with. This way, Home might become the next big thing and then people would buy PS3s for Home. Also, it would be cool to go on home from anywhere and chat with your ps3 buddies.
