Nyko Dual Charger AC review

Posted on December 3rd, 2007 at 11:20 EDT

One detriment that the PlayStation 3 unfortunately features is the inability to charge the wireless remotes while the console is turned off. Sure, this doesn’t affect the people who leave their consoles on 24 hours a day, but for gamers who like to turn it off after they’re done using it, it can impose quite a challenge since the PS3 can’t charge the wireless remote while the console is turned off.

Now, I don’t know about most of you, but I envy the ability to sit ten feet away on my beanbag couch and play Resistance online for hours on end. Unfortunately, it seems like the stock charge cable is whopping six inches long so I have to sit like I would in the front row of a movie theater for a half-hour before I get a nice charge and can retreat back to the safety my couch.

This is where Nyko’s Dual Charger AC comes into action. The charger allows you to charge your PS3 remote anywhere there is a wall outlet. If that means charging next to your couch so you don’t have to get up in case you’re remote dies, then go for it. If that means charging your remote in your bathroom because it’s oddly convenient, then that’s cool too. The point is you don’t have to leave your console on and charge your remotes next to it anymore.

The Dual Charger AC comes with the wall charger itself and two 4 feet USB to mini USB cables to connect your wireless remotes with. The two USB cables come with Velcro wraps and the charger features collapsible prongs, which makes it conventional for storage and travel. The charger also has two USB ports so that you can charge two remotes at the same time, but I’m sure you have already figured that out.

Nyko’s product also has the ability to charge not only the PlayStation 3 wireless remotes, but also other USB powered devices such as an iPod or a camera. Although the Dual Charge AC is a little expensive (USD 19.99) for something so simple, it’s definitely worth a try.

Bottom Line:
Whether you are charging a wireless remote or a cell phone, Nyko's Dual Charger AC is a must-have accessory for those who turn off their consoles after playing.

Pros:
+Charge two remotes while PS3 is off
+Plugs into any standard wall socket
+Charges other USB powered devices

Cons:
-Short cables (4 feet)
-Slightly over priced

Score:
9.0 / 10

I would think most people by now would have PCs, and naturally can use the USB slots to charge them. Unless the Nyko Dual Charger AC provides a shorter charge-time, I see no need to purchase this.

there is only one problem with getting a ipod charger, and that fact is that it charges at a different voltage lvl than the ps3 charger. i believe ipod is 3.3v and the ps3 controller is 5v so you could end up damaging your controller. i did try to charge it on the ipod one and it didnt work so if u buy one make sure it does 5v

Is this old?  I thought there was something just like this already-the other Nyko charger (Controller dock) was "newer" if you will.

or just charge it on a wii if u have one, it will charge almost everthing. I charge my ps3 controllers, and phone, on my wii when its even not on, Its a pain 2 charge ur controllers on the ps3 cause it has 2 be on and the damn wire gets in the way of the screen, it works great for only that  though. I hardly play it anymore since I got ps3  = )

Man, that device has been out since forever and it is only being reviewed now???... anyway... I guess it is a good for new PS3 users... ALSO, the main Pro on that review is the ability to charge the controllers while the PS3 is off...Correct me if I am wrong but as reported by some people in the forums if the remote start feature is enabled (the one that came with Firmware 2.0) then the PS3 will charge even if it is off... so no need for this charger...

I leave my PS3 on 24/7 but sometimes I get the urge to charge my controller with my Motorola SLVR charger or just USB connection to my computer, since that's also on 24/7.

One feature i would like is for the controlers to turn themselves off after a period of inactivity as i often leave the console on to download stuff or to do some folding only to come back and find that ive forgot to turn it off myself and walloped the controler batery.
