David Reeves, the President and Chief Executive Officer of Sony Computer Entertainment Europe (SCEE), has gone on record to state that the company’s PlayStation 3 console will overtake current lifetime sales of the Xbox 360 in Europe by summer 2008.
Speaking to trade website MCV, Reeves claimed that sales of the PS3 have already surpassed those of Microsoft Corp’s next-generation console in territories including France, Spain, Italy and Germany.
“In December we sold just over a million PlayStation 3s during the month”, he said. "That’s across all PAL territories and that’s a sell-through figure.
“About 20-22 per cent of that figure was sold in the UK alone. We’re very happy with the performance of PS3 in the UK.”
“We don’t often mention the competition, but I will give you some interesting data: In terms of installed base in some of our major markets, such as France, Spain, Germany and Italy – plus some distributor territories in smaller markets like Switzerland – our current cumulative installed base is now higher than Xbox 360”, added Reeves.
“It has not yet reached that in the UK. But the team here expect to overtake the installed base of Xbox 360 across all PAL territories in late summer. It’s also worth mentioning that last week we outsold Xbox 360 in PAL territories by a ratio of three to one.”
The PS3 launched across Europe in March 2007, with Xbox 360 releasing over a year in advance in November 2005.

Sounds about right to me...
Microsoft makes conolses? lol ha!
psn id: gingo...hmmm i could see this by the end of the year but not by summer because 360 has a much larger total in UK compared to ps3
well here's hoping it come to pass, for reeve's sake
Nice
They sold 180.000 units in scandinavia in 2007 (Source:Nordsk Film) That's pretty good since it covers 4 nations with a combined population of approx. 20 mill
great to hear
RE: Silenthill sam, in 1up yours podcast the say left4dead is coming to the ps3, it just hasn't been announced.
Europe rocks!
Thats awesome. Let's hope they can do it =]
maybe not by summer but proberbly by the end of 2008
If that 3-1 ratio continues then i don't see why summer couldnt be achievalbe.
Nice Nice.. it is rare to hear someone make such a bold statement though ... but i believe in it none the less :)
Deldwen
Indeed, my thoughts exactly...
Deldwen: Jesus... very funny none the less.
Deldwen to mounni tis manas sou einai meli
First they had Japan, Sony will have Europe by summer or end of 08 the latest, so then Sony can concentrate on taking NA. Not included Wii but out of the 3, IMO I think PS3 is the harder train to slow down, due to blu-ray, better library of games and the best exclusives, don't forget future price cuts. I think when Wii eventually slows down, the PS3 is still gaining momentum.
If they continue to bring on more deals in the PAL regions like special bundles and increase the amount of PSN titles then yeah I think they may be able to divide that margin but not overtake it so soon.
I really don't take Reeves seriously anymore, because usually he's just talking alittle to much like Moore was when he was with M$.
Havent they said this like 15 times already?
That novelty ... lol
So in PAL they're selling by 3:1
And in Japan it's...what? 11:1 or something like that?
So the PS3 is winning big in 2 of the 3 major areas (what abou US?), seems like the 360 is going down right now!
Good to hear the the PS3 is doing well in Europe. Considering seasonal volumes out selling the 360 may or may not be a big thing, but a good trend that will hopefully continue!
We will see.......no more delays bring on the heavy hitters!
haha srry psu... they deleted it.. it was really gross tho =]
