PS3 Firmware 2.17 released

Posted on March 13th, 2008 at 10:24 EDT

To continuously enhance the overall PlayStation 3 experience, Sony has released the firmware 2.17 update for the PS3 today. To download the update, simply turn on your console and log into your PSN account.

Try not to get too excited, however, the firmware 2.17 is nothing more than a mere technical update to augment the PS3’s online gaming capabilities.

"The operating stability of some online PS3 titles has been improved,” Sony commented.

So do not expect anything huge such as new design scheme or features. The update should not go unnoticed however, as many PS3 online titles such as COD4 could benefit from this significantly.

I thought they were going to stop releasing small fixes in the form of firmware updates and only release large firmware updates a few months at a time.  Not to say this fix isnt needed, but they should have bundled it with something more significant, such as in game XMB, custom soundtrax, DTS-HD Master Audio decoding?

If this can resolve the disconnect error issues with COD4 then will be a HUGE firmware update!  Be prepared for another boat load of "COD4" killed my PS3 threads in the forum too...........

I swear to everyone here that if someone says something about in-game XMB in the next update, I will delete my account and go somewhere else.  I'm really sick of hearing about it and all the sheep following in a flock doesn't help it.

Everyone here could get Beta invites to Resistance 2, Killzone 2, and LittleBigPlanet, and half the comments here would STILL be b!tching about the damn in-game XMB.  I doubt half the people here even know what it is.

Yeah, my COD4 gets stuck "Downloading Game Settings" for literally hours at a time before I can play it on-line.  I hope this fixes that problem finally!

I agree with InfernoReaper stop whining about it. I hope one day we'll get it, but until then i dont care. I probly wont use it much anyway. I like video game music, i mean all these composers spend time making the music in these games. Even in games like GTA, they have to spend a long time getting the licences of the songs. The only thing i would use it for is messeging.

Plus... that update added a new Visualisation for your music. Check it out, its awesome.

@happypeoplearegay, if you mean the 'earth' visualisation that was available before firmware 2.10, Although I think I've noticed new areas in the 'trench' visualisation, I can't be sure. And as for in game music I think most of us mean tracks stored on HDD, I hope WipEout HD has this option but only if the tunes start where the original soundtrack would have started (unlike Super Stardust HD)

Sorry to go off topic, but i gotta say this:

I love my BRAND SPANKIN' NEW PSP.

Thanks for listening.

@Mishal

In-game XMB is probably the most anticipated feature of the ps3,it is exactly what it's called,it allows you to access the GUI of the ps3 known as the Xross Media Bar(XMB),while you are playing some other game, what it would allow you to do is basically put on custom music in the background, send messages to friends, and access the rest of the features of the XMB,while your game is "paused" in the background, like on PCs,where you just press Alt+Esc,and it minimizes your game,to allow you to use some other application,or w/e else you wanna do.Why it's highly anticipated is becuz of ,in my opinion, two reasons:(1)Because it was publicized by Sony b4 ps3's launch.

(2)Because the 360 has been able to do it,since it's launch i.e. right out of the box.

I hope that helped you understand why it is so WILDLY wanted in the ps3 community.
